Coming, Deoband fatwa on terrorism
By TwoCircles.net staff reporter
New Delhi: In what could turn out to be a path-breaking development, Asia’s most revered Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband is set to declare terrorism an anti-Islamic act.
The declaration will be flashed on 25th February at the end of an anti-terrorism seminar to be held in Deoband. The seminar is likely to be attended by the representatives of around 6,000 madrasas from across the country besides foreign delegates.
Maulana Abdul Khaleque Madrasi, vice rector of the seminary has been quoted saying that all acts of terrorism and killing of innocent people of any religion are strictly prohibited by the holy Quran in its chapter 5 (Al-Maidah) and these acts are anti Islamic.
The declaration would pronounce that persons involved in the act of terrorism anywhere will qualify to be called a non-Muslim. The declaration will include advice to the Muslim community to stay away from acts of terrorism and organizations that encourage it.

Muslim heads huddle to discuss terror
21 Feb 2008, 0206 hrs IST,TNN
NEW DELHI: A meeting at Darul Uloom at Deoband next week, expected to be attended by ulema from over 6,000 madrassas including those affiliated to other sects like Barelvis and Ahl-e-Hadis, will deliberate on the need to take a stand against groups which justify terrorism as being sanctioned by Islam.
The day-long discussions have been planned in view of terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed arguing that violence against non-believers, including innocent bystanders, was part of religious duty and was theologically approved by Deoband's Darul Uloom.
"We have condemned terrorism earlier. But this time we felt that as an institution, the Darul Uloom had to take an initiative to make it clear that Islam does not sanction terrorism and that Deobandis do not believe in this either," said Maulana Mahmood Madani, general secretary of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind.
The organisers of the conclave said terrorist tanzims, which drew ideological inspiration and recruited fighters from madrassas in Pakistan, have argued that teachings of Deoband were their inspiration.
"We want to say that what happens in their madrassas is their business. We are keen to make it clear that killing innocents, let's say someone walking on the road, is not justified in Islam," said the school's deputy rector Qazi Usman.
The task before the meeting, which is slated to take place on February 25, will comprise offering a theological explanation repudiating the "divine" duty claimed by figures like Syed Hafiz Saeed, head of LeT, in calling for a violent jihad against India. "If such violence is jihad, then Muslims will be bound by it. But we are saying this is not jihad. It is, in fact, anti-Islam besides being anti-national," said Madani.
Both Madani and Usman felt that terrorism was posing questions which needed urgent answers. Muslims were being drawn into acts of terror, often as foot soldiers or local collaborators. This led to security agencies coming down hard on Muslim suspects even as equating terrorism with Islam was resulting in bitterness and suspicion between communities. "We need to involve ourselves as Islam gets a bad name," said Madani. The increasing involvement of local recruits was also worrying.
"We have to forcefully oppose terrorism. We also have warn to people that they must not be misguided and drawn to a violent act that will help those opposed to our society and motherland," said Usman.

I think thats a product of media creativity very much common in indian media..........
"We have condemned terrorism earlier. this is what happens when scholars join political parties(secular and hindu),they end up trying to appease the majority
"We have to forcefully oppose terrorism. We also have warn to people that they must not be misguided and drawn to a violent act that will help those opposed to our society and motherland," said Usman.

Asalam 3leikoum wr wb,
Dear akhi let us have a look at what a Scholar that I myself do not follow, but is in fact a scholar and unlike many of the brothers in Oum al Qura etc. has been learning fiq usool all his life. Today anyone can go to Oum al Quraa or sit and "learn from the Scholars". I do not necessarily believe this fatwa is correct but perhaps it holds more weight than a reconstituted Muslim with a 2 year basic understanding of the modern day Salafi school of thought.
Jazak Allah Khair,

Question:
Are Deobandis part of Ahlus Sunnah? Are they within the folds of Islam?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
The Deobandis are one of the groups of Muslims. This group is connected to and named after the University of Deoband – Dar al-Uloom – in India. It is an intellectual school of thought that is deeply rooted, and everyone who graduated from that university was influenced by its academic characteristics, so that they became known as Deobandis.
The University of Deoband was founded by a group of Indian ‘ulamaa’ (scholars) after the British had put a stop to the Islamic revolution in India in 1857 CE. Its establishment was a strong reaction against western advancement and its materialistic civilization in the Indian Subcontinent, aimed at saving the Muslims from the dangers of these circumstances, especially when Delhi, the capital, had been destroyed following the revolution and the British had taken full control of it. The scholars feared that their religion might be assimilated, so Shaykh Imdaadullaah al-Muhaajir al-Makki and his student Shaykh Muhammad Qaasim al-Nanatuwi, and their companions, drew up a plan to protect Islam and its teachings. They thought that the solution was to establish religious schools and Islamic centers, thus al-Madrasah al-Islamiyyah al-Arabiyyah was established in Deoband as a center for Islam and Sharee’ah in India at the time of British rule.
The most prominent figures of this intellectual school:
1- Muhammad Qaasim
2- Rasheed Ahmad al-Kankoohi
3- Husayn Ahmad al-Madani
4- Muhammad Anwaar Shah al-Kashmiri
5- Abu’l-Hasan al-Nadvi
6- Al-Muhaddith Habeeb al-Rahmaan al-A’zami
Thoughts and beliefs
With regard to basic tenets of belief (‘aqeedah), they follow the madhhab of Abu Mansoor al-Maatreedi.
They follow the madhhab of Imaam Abu Haneefah with regard to fiqh and minor issues.
They follow the Sufi tareeqahs of the Naqshbandiyyah, Chishtiyyah, Qaadiriyyah and Saharwardiyyah with regard to spiritual development.
The thoughts and principles of the Deobandi school may be summed up as follows:
- Preserving the teachings of Islam and its strength and rituals.
- Spreading Islam and resisting destructive schools of thought and missionary activity.
- Spreading Islamic culture and resisting the invading British culture.
- Paying attention to spreading the Arabic language because it is the means of benefiting from the sources of Islamic sharee’ah.
- Combining reason and emotion, and knowledge and spirituality.
See al-Mawsoo’ah al-Muyassarah fil Adyaan wal Madhaahib (1/308).
Because the Deobandis follow the Maatreedi madhhab with regard to belief (‘aqeedah), we have to define what al-Maatreediyyah is:
This is a philosophical (kalaami) group which is named after Abu Mansoor al-Maatreedi. It is based on using rational and philosophical proof and evidence in disputes with opponents from among the Mu’tazilah, Jahamiyyah and others to establish the truths of religion and Islamic ‘aqeedah (belief). With regard to sources, the Maatreediyyah divide the bases of religion into two categories depending on the source:
1 – Divine or rational: these are matters which are established independently by reason and the reports follow that. This includes issues of Tawheed and the Divine attributes.
2 – Legislative matters or transmitted reports, These are matters which reason states may or may not exist, but there is no way to prove rationally that they exist, such as Prophethood, the torment of the grave and issues of the Hereafter. It should be noted that some of them regarded Prophethood as coming under the heading of rational issues.
It is obvious that this is contradictory to the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, because the Qur’aan, Sunnah and consensus of the Sahaabah are the sources of guidance in their view. This is in addition to their bid’ah (innovation) of dividing the sources of religion into rational matters vs. transmitted reports, which was based on the false notion of the philosophers who assumed that the religious texts contradict reason, so they tried to mediate between reason and the transmitted reports. This led them to force reason into fields where it has no place, so they came up with false rulings which contradicted sharee’ah, and that led them to say that they did not know what the texts mean and that only Allaah knows their meaning, or to misinterpret them altogether. In the view of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, on the other hand, there is no contradiction between sound reason and the sound transmitted reports.
See al-Mawsoo’ah al-Muyassarah fi’l-Adyaan wa’l-Madhaahib al-Mu’aasirah, 1/99
Attitude of Ahl al-Sunnah towards the Maatreediyyah
It was narrated from the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that this ummah would split into seventy-three sects, all of which would be in the Fire apart from one. The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained that the saved group is the Jamaa’ah, which is the group that follows the same path as the Messenger SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions.
Undoubtedly Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, who adhere to the Qur’aan and Sunnah in terms of both knowledge and actions, are the saved group, and this description applies to them, i.e., they adhere to that which the Messenger SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions adhered to in terms of knowledge and actions.
It is not sufficient for an individual or group merely to claim to belong to the Sunnah whilst going against the methodology of the salaf, namely the Sahaabah and Taabi’een. Rather it is essential to adhere to their methodology in knowledge, action, approach and spiritual development.
The Maatreediyyah are one of the groups whose opinions include true and false views, and some things that go against the Sunnah. It is known that these groups vary with regard to the truth, how near or far they are; the closer they are to the Sunnah, the closer they are to the truth and the right way. Among them are some who went against the Sunnah with regard to basic principles, and some who went against the Sunnah with regard to more subtle issues. There are some who refuted other groups who are farther away from the Sunnah, so they are to be praised with regard to their refutation of falsehood and what they have said of truth, but they have overstepped the mark in so far as they have rejected part of the truth and gone along with some falsehood. So they have refuted a serious bid’ah by means of a lesser bid’ah, and refuted falsehood with a lesser form of falsehood. This is the case with most of the philosophers (ahl al-kalaam) who claim to belong to Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah…”
(From the words of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah, al-Fataawa, 1/348).
There remains one important question to be answered, which is: what is our duty towards the Maatreediyyah and groups who hold similar beliefs such as the Deobandis and others?
The answer varies according to differences in the persons involved.
If someone is stubborn and propagates his bid’ah, then we must warn others about him and explain where he has gone wrong and deviated. But if he does not propagate his bid’ah and it is clear from his words and actions that he is seeking the truth and striving for that purpose, then we should advise him and explain to him what is wrong with this belief, and guide him in a manner that is better; perhaps Allaah will bring him back to the truth. This advice is included in the words of the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Religion is sincerity (or sincere advice).” We [the Sahabah] asked, “To whom?” He said, “To Allaah and His Book, and His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 55).

Darul Uloom Deoband to Hold All-India Anti-Terrorism Conference
22 February, 2008
Darul Uloom Deoband
Islam is the religion of peace, tranquility, brotherhood, tolerance, love and equality. Muslims of India and especially Ulama of madrasas have always played, and are playing, a very important role in developing the dear motherland, in establishing national integration, peace and tolerance. India's Muslims (like other communities of India) always want to see their motherland independent, sovereign, strong and peaceful. They have always condemned terrorism. Terrorism with all its forms is against the teachings of Islam and against the constitution of India as well. In fact, terrorism has no religion. To associate it with a particular religion, community or group is entirely wrong. The acts of terrorism and violence taking place in any part of the country by any individual, community or group must equally be condemned. Similarly, to target any individual, community or group in the name of terrorism is against the dictates of the constitution.
The All-India anti-terrorism conference to be held on 25th February by Darul Uloom Deoband will deal with the same topic. It will reiterate its determination to continue its efforts to promote peace, national solidarity and brotherhood in the country. The conference will also advise Muslims to be careful and cautious about conspiracies in the present situation. Government agencies and authorities will be demanded that the security of all the citizens of the country is ensured and the Muslim community and people of madrasas or any particular community are not harassed and tortured in the name of terrorism.
Representatives of many different Muslim schools of thought and Muslim organizations have been invited to attend the conference. Apart from madrasas following Darul Uloom Deoband's school of thought, the representatives and Ulama of Baraelwi, Ahl-e-Hadith, Jama'at-e-Islami and Shi'ah schools of thought and the heads and delegates of their madrasas have been invited. The rectors (Sajjada Nashins) of the Dargahs of Ajmer Sharif and Kichhauchha Sharif have also been invited.
The heads and representatives of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, Milli Council and the Darul Uloom Deoband's Old Boys Association will also participate in the conference.
The conference will start at 8:30 a.m. on 25th February and will continue till 2 p.m.

Darool-Uloom Deoband has denounced terrorism as against Islam, calling it an unpardonable sin.
Tens of thousands of traditional scholars and students from around India attended a meeting - under the heading "All-India Anti-Terrorism Conference" - at the 150-year-old Deoband seminary, north of New Delhi, on Monday, and agreed to take a stand against acts of terrorism.
“Rabta Madaris Islamiah Arabia (Islamic Seminaries Federation) condemns all kinds of violence and terrorism in the strongest possible terms,” said the edict which was ratified at the conference. "Islam has considered mischief, rioting and murder among the severest sins and crimes."
"There is no place for terrorism in Islam," Maulana Marghoobur Rahman, the ageing rector of Deoband, told Reuters on Tuesday. "Terrorism, killing of the innocent is against Islam. It is a faith of love and peace, not violence."
Thousands of smaller Islamic seminaries are affiliated to the Deoband school in India alone.
Its teachings, and its extremely conservative interpretation of Islamic law, have spread to many other countries, including Britain and Afghanistan.
Rahman's comments are seen as significant as they betray a deep sense of anxiety among India's 140 million Muslims that a violent interpretation of Islam was finding root in the country and tarnishing the reputation of the entire community.
Adil Siddiqui, another Deobandi representative, noted that “whenever there is any incident of terrorism, every possible attempt is made to link it to Muslims, particularly who have studied in madrassas. This is totally wrong.”
The meeting defined terrorism as any action targeting innocent people, whether committed by an individual, an institution or a government.
Rahman's sermon will be circulated to all madrasas affiliated to his seminary.
Muslims make up about 13 percent of India's officially secular but predominantly Hindu population -- giving it the third largest Islamic population after Indonesia and Pakistan.

DECLARATION
All India Anti-Terrorism Conference
Organized by: Rabta Madaris Islamiah (Islamic Madrasas Association)
Darul Uloom Deoband, on 17 Safar 1429 H = 25 February 2008 Monday
Chaired by: Hazrat Maulana Marghoobur Rahman Sahib,
Mohtamim Darul Uloom Deoband
& President of Islamic Madrasas Association, Darul Uloom Deoband
Islam is the religion of mercy for all humanity. It is the fountainhead of eternal peace, tranquility, security. Islam has given so much importance to human beings that it regards the killing of a single person the of killing the entire humanity, without differentiation based on creed and caste. Its teaching of peace encompasses all humanity. Islam has taught its followers to treat all mankind with equality, mercy, tolerance, justice. Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and terrorism. It has regarded oppression, mischief, rioting and murdering among severest sins and crimes.
This All India Anti-Terrorism Conference attended by the representatives of all Muslim schools of thought organised by Rabta Madaris Islamiah Arabia (Islamic Madrasas Association), Darul Uloom Deoband condemns all kinds of violence and terrorism in the strongest possible terms. The Conference expresses its deep concern and agony on the present global and national alarming conditions in which most of the nations are adopting such an attitude against their citizens especially Muslims to appease the tyrant and colonial master of the West, which cannot be justified in any way. It is a matter of greater concern that the internal and external policies of our country are getting heavily influenced by these forces. Their aggression, barbarism and state-sponsored terrorism not only in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan but also in Bosnia and various South American countries have surpassed all the records known to human history. Contrary to it, our great nation has always been known for impartiality and its moral and spiritual values. Now the situation has worsened so far that every Indian Muslim especially those associated with madrasas, who are innocent with good record of characters, are always gripped by the fear that they might be trapped by the administrative machinery anytime. And, today countless number of innocent Muslims are spending their lives behind the bars and are forced to bear many intolerable tortures. And, those spreading terror, attacking police stations, killing the police in broad daylight and showing illegal arms are roaming about freely with no effective and preventive steps being taken by the government to check their acts of terrorism and violence. This partial attitude has put a big question mark on the secular character of the government posing great threats to the country. Therefore, this All India Anti-Terrorism Conference strongly condemns this attitude and expresses its deep concern on this partiality of government officials and declares its continuous joint struggles for domination of law, justice and secular system.
This conference strongly demands the Indian Government to curb those maligning the madrasas and Muslims. The administrative machinery should be demanded to conduct impartial investigations in activities disturbing public peace in the country and to punish only those found guilty. It also demands to free the accused if he is found innocent and punish severely those officials who accused him of crimes of terrorism. No person of any particular community should be suspected without solid reasons. In short, the government agencies must fulfill their duty justly without any prejudice and bias so that real peace and security may prevail in the country.
This All India Anti-Terrorism Conference appeals to all intellectuals, writers and media persons to independently and honestly analyze the national and international affairs and avoid to biased and partial attitudes.
Moreover, this All India anti-Terrorism Conference attended by the representatives of all schools of thought appeal to all Muslims to continue, as they always did in the past, their loyalty towards the dear motherland and love and respect towards humanity. It appeals to them to fully understand the present alarming situation, the gravity and intensity of the time, and feel the pulse of the present world so that they might not be employed as tools of evils by anti-Islamic or anti-national forces. It peals to them to live with dignity and pride being faithful to the country, to keep full trust on their leadership, render full support to Islamic madarsas which are valuable assets of the Muslim Ummah, spend their lives in the country following Islamic Shariah and teachings with full confidence. They should always remember that most important things are Islam and practicing it, and, hence, their prime focus should be on enriching their lives with good deeds and noble manners as, in fact, worldly situations deteriorate because of non-practice of Islamic teachings.
Need for holding state-wise conferences against terrorism.
This meeting of working committee of All India madarsas association feels necessary to hold state-wise conferences as it held this grand conference in view of the existing situations. The present situation of the country demands the joint and constant efforts being made to denounce terrorism, biased and discriminatory attitudes of the government against the Muslim community. It needs such conferences to be held in the major places of all the states. This meeting appeals to Darul Uloom Deoband to act as a leader in this direction.

:. JM [Jami'atulMujahideen] flays Deoband scholars
SRINAGAR, Feb 26: Jamiatul Mujahideen (JM) today said that Monday's decree of Deoband scholars is against the Islamic movements in the world and in support of suppressive forces.
In a statement to a local news agency, KNS its spokesman Jameel Ahmad said the decree has no Sharia status and it does not meet the requirements of Sharia and justice. "Rather than issuing such a non-Sharia decree, the Deoband scholars must have made it clear as to what is the difference between terrorism and the struggle of suppressed Muslims. This is very unfortunate that present day scholars rather their performing their responsibilities are forcing the Muslims to tolerate oppression and live as slaves," the spokesman alleged.
He stated that while Deoband was an important Islamic educational institution but in recent past its heads had connections with important leaders of Congress. These very Congress scholars tarnished the image of the institution. "By making the large number of scholars to assemble there, Deoband wanted to make its position clear that it is against all the Islamic and pro freedom movement in the world. The Deoband scholars must sit again, reconsider their decree and issue a fresh decree for jehad," Jameel said.

Brother, if you are still asking about evidence against these scholars, then they themselves have established it.
They are proud be Indian patriots, their da'wah is secularism and domination of Indian constitution and loyalty towards their dear country. What else do you want? They have called for united jihad against the so-called terrorists. Their "deep concern" is that government is not concentrating upon "those spreading terror, attacking police stations, killing the police in broad daylight", and they are afraid that police's implicating innocent Muslim youth in terrorism is worsening the image of govt. rather they ask to "punish only those found guilty."
If you still do not know any evidence against them, then you should read matter on Tawheed alUloohiyah, Jihad al-Defa`, Muwalaat with Mushrikin against the believers etc.

Taliban ideology lives on in India
DEOBAND, Uttar Pradesh - The Taliban may have been defeated militarily in Afghanistan, but the ideology of the militia lives on at its wellspring - a madrassa (Koranic seminary) in this small town in this northern Indian state.
"Islam, that brought peace to a chaotic world centuries ago, ushering in respect and equality for all, will prevail again," says Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi, pro-vice chancellor of Darul-Uloom (House of Knowledge) some 150 kilometers from the capital New Delhi.
With 30,000 unofficial Darul-Uloom branches across India and its graduates opening new madrassa and preaching at mosques in Saudi Arabia, Britain, the United States and South Africa, the 50-year old scholar is confident that the Deobandi talim (knowledge) will soon spread globally.
"Muslims of the world will unite to defend Islam in eternity," Madrasi says, to the approval of two students listening appreciatively to their tutor. The loquacious teacher, with a droll sense of humor, declared that Muslims live for the "hereafter" while spiritually bankrupt Westerners exist only for the present.
"Islam needs dedicated soldiers like the Taliban [Islamic students] to defend itself against the depraved West that takes off its clothes in the name of progress and modernity," the maulana (teacher) declared, sitting cross-legged on an intricately patterned carpet in his sparsely furnished, book-lined study.
He said that the Taliban's "purist ideology" coincided with Deobandi philosophy centered on fundamental Koranic tenets and the hadith (the Prophet Muhammad's sayings) and would proliferate across all societies like a soothing balm.
For decades, Pakistani, Afghan and Kashmiri militant groups have claimed as their spiritual powerhouse the Deobandi school, founded by Maulana Mohammad Qasim Nanautvi in 1866 or nine years after the Indian Mutiny - the first war of independence to most Indians, against the British occupiers.
The Taliban in Afghanistan emerged from madrassas in Pakistan to take control of most of Afghanistan in 1996 with the active support of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence, which provided arms, training and even officers and men from the Pakistan army, to participate in its military operations. But many Deoband leaders fear that their faith has been tarnished by the likes of Taliban leader Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden..
Appalled by the execution of hundreds of ulama (scholars) by the British for participating in the 1866 revolt, Nanautvi rejected Western values, opted for traditionalism and founded the first political madrassa at Deoband in Uttar Pradesh following an inspired dream.
Today, surrounded by a high wall, Darul Uloom is located at one end of Deoband, a squalid, crowded and nondescript agricultural town in this state famous otherwise for its mango orchards. The sprawling, stark campus, spread over 40 hectares, is abuzz with construction activity as old hostels are torn down to make way for new accommodation for the 3,300 students.
A grandiloquent mosque, which when completed will be able to accommodate more than 30,000 devotees, presides over the severity and piety that suffuses Darul Uloom. Two other smaller, older mosques are nearby. Few of the original brick-red buildings with minarets and large arches, other than the library, a senior boys' hostel and staff quarters, survive.
A silent humming noise pervades the many parks of the madrassa as scores of boys rock to and fro as they memorize thick text books cradled in their laps. Many students have been forced by the rigor of their courses to forego vacations during the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan to prepare for examinations later this month.
Dressed in traditional white, baggy shalwar trousers, knee-length shirts and starched caps, 3,300 madrassa students - selected after a rigorous entrance test - stroll in and out of a labyrinth of classrooms for eight years. They study a mixture of Arabic, Farsi and Urdu, imbibing the spirit of a conservative strand of Islam from a curriculum unchanged for 135 years.
Many enter the madrassa at the age of five to leave it 20 years later, sporting beards recommended for Muslim men and steeped in this school's rigid interpretation of Islam.
All students begin by memorizing the Koran by rote and pursue a syllabus that stresses behavior and a spartan lifestyle. "The Koran dictates everything, about the way we live, behave and conduct ourselves," Madrasi says. A dash of mathematics and Greek logic are part of the course that gives students little time for leisure.
A few indulge in rudimentary cricket played with a tennis ball, a makeshift bat and a pile of bricks that serve as the wickets. Namaz (prayer) is said five times every day and television and newspapers are banned as "un-Islamic".
Al Azhar University, the world's largest madrassa located in Cairo, defers to scholarship at the Darul Uloom, which is only second in size. For years, Al Azhar sent its scholars to Deoband for higher studies, especially in the area of fatwa or edicts.
Darul-Uloom recently issued a fatwa against Muslims using Western products after the US declared war on the Taliban. "The Taliban brought peace to Afghanistan and took the correct steps to protect Islam that is under assault by Christians and Jews," Madrasi declared of the rule of the militia that controlled most of Afghanistan from 1996 until last week.
Like the Darul Uloom students and many among its tens of thousands of its graduates, Madrasi is convinced that the September 11 attacks were the work of the United States and Israel in order to wage war against the Muslim world, and not Osama bin Laden. He also justifies jihad against the "perfidious West" as a "defensive tactic" and approves of confining women to their homes, enforcing beards on men and proscription of all forms of enjoyment and entertainment.

20,000 Scholars Declare Terrorism as Un-Islamic [Darul-Uloom Deoband]
http://counterterrorismblog.org/darululoom.jpg
LUCKNOW, Feb 25: Muslim scholars on Monday condemned terrorism as un-Islamic. They issued the edict at a leading madressah in northern India which some believe inspired the Taliban movement, a senior cleric said.
A declaration by scholars and clerics representing different sects of Islam also called on the government to ensure Muslims were not harassed in the name of terrorism, Maulana Shaukat told reporters.
Speaking from the 150-year-old Darul-Uloom Deoband in Saharanpur, 435km from the Uttar Pradesh capital, he said about 20,000 scholars and clerics took part.
The declaration said: “Islam is a religion of mercy for all humanity. Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and terrorism.
“It has regarded oppression, mischief, rioting and murder among severest sins and crimes. Islam prohibits killing of innocent people.”
The group called on the government to ensure “the Muslim community are not harassed and tortured in the name of terrorism”.
Adil Siddiqui, another spokesman for the Deoband school, noted that “whenever there is any incident of terrorism, every possible attempt is made to link it to Muslims, particularly who have studied in madressahs. This is totally wrong.”
The declaration comes after several incidents of global terrorism involving Indian Muslims. The most prominent is Kafeel Ahmed, an Indian aeronautical engineer, who died during a botched attempt to attack Glasgow airport in June last year.
His brother Sabeel, a doctor, is also being investigated by British police over his alleged involvement in the Glasgow attack. Charges against a third Indian, Mohammed Haneef, a doctor working at a hospital in Australia’s Gold Coast, collapsed.
Political analyst Rasheed Kidwai welcomed the declaration, saying: “In the Indian context, the declaration is significant as it reflects the growing anxiety among the clergy over the involvement of some Indians in alleged terror plots.”—AFP

Masha'Allaah! Now you see, that being against Terrorism is not the same as being against Jihaad!

These Ulama' are not talking about Jihaad in this declaration, so - from this - we don't even know their viewpoint on Jihaad.
When I was in Kabul a few months ago, there was this "Loya Jirga" meeting. All roads were closed and there were police everywhere, so we couldn't get through. It was live on all TV channels, and some clean shaven guys were talking against terrorism. :p WHO cares about what they've got to say? No one! People want to hear from the Kibaar Ulama', not some clean shaven Anti-Jihaad fools!
This declaration by these Ulama' is a good step forward ...

Before we wholeheartedly endorse we have to look at the wider picture and ask who is pushing this and why? sometimes they use these terms to mean much more then what you and i understand them to mean.

are these the same deobandis
...
India in the 18th century, where it created the basis for a jihad (holy war) against the British.
Thats what is the shocking truth, the deoband which was created for the purpose of jihad, has turned away from it this is what happens when muslims live under the domination of kuffar, there is no better example than this to observe the effects of living under kuffar:
SubhanAllah! it is indeed shocking that they manisfested their subjugation and had set an example of it with least self-respect.
But brothers, this has nothing to do with being Deobandis. Shias and Barelwis were also invited and took part in it let alone "ghair-muqallidin" Salafis and Jamat-e-Islami Hind's "Mawdudis".
Can we blame ShaykhulIslam Muhammad ibn 'Abdul Wahhab for today's scholars? Deoband has simply followed the path of Al-Azhar.
“It is true that the Ustad (teachers) of the Taliban in Afghanistan were educated here, but none of the Taliban cadres were educated here. The Taliban of Afghanistan are considered to be the practitioners of Deobandi ideology, but Deoband never advocated terrorism and categorically opposed the menace of terror,” said Mufti-e-Sahar of Muzaffarnagar, Haji Hafiz Maulana Mufti Zulfikar Ali. The Maulana is a key member of the Darul Uloom’s leadership.
“One of the reasons for the anti-terrorism conference was that Deoband wanted to dispel this impression about proximity of the institution with Taliban,” he said.

The one-day convention was addressed by Maulana Arshad Madni, president of Jamiatul Ulema-i-Hind; Maulana Jalaluddin Umri, chief of Jamaat-I-Islami; Maulana Salim Qasmi of Darul Uloom Waqf, Deoband; Maulana Mahmud Madni; Maulana Salman Hasani Nadwi of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulema, Lucknow; and Maulana Salfi of Darul Salfiya, Varanasi.

Introspection on Deoband Declaration
Tue, 2008-03-04 03:10
By M. Burhanuddin Qasmi
It is imperative to see that even some hard core BJP sevaks are speaking about organizing debate on mutual understanding among Hindus and Muslims in India after the Anti-Terrorism Deoband Conference on 25 February. It is also appreciable that national and international media both print and electronic are taking the 'Deoband Declaration' with the same letter and spirit that the issue actually deserved.
The discussions on various web sites and TV talks where a few participants have understandably put their views honestly are encouraging. Some of the arguments like what more the Darul Uloom can do while countering terrorism and why Deoband was organizing the conference this late in some newspapers and web blogs have also been repeated in the conference itself by the speakers and enshrined in the 'Deoband Declaration', where this writer was present as participant as well as a member while preparing the declaration.
What disturbing common peace loving Muslims of India is why the mainstream media or for that matter socio-political analysts in general are not asking write wing Hindu political parties— Shiv Sena, BJP and extremist organizations like VHP, RSS and Bajrang Dal to introspect honestly about their role in the national integration and communal harmony in India. Why a debate is not being conducted to precisely define what exactly terrorism is? If the activities of ULFA, Maoist, Naxalite and LTTE come under the universal definition of terrorism, if yes, then why a word 'Muslim' is prefixed while describing some terrorists and others are just known by the organizations they belong to?
Very recently Tamilnadu police have unfolded a terrorist plot of Privar activists and arrested three persons-- S Ravi Pandian (42), S Kumar (28} and V Narayana Sharma (26), all Sangh Parivar activists, for bomb blasts in the bus stop and RSS office at Tenkasi, a busy town in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, where at least six persons were killed. The list is long from Nanded, Jhalna, Nagpur to Jama Masjid Delhi, Malegaon and Makkah Masjid Hyderabad where write wing political interest is suspect to be behind blasts and fair, transparent investigation is awaited.
While making a trustworthy peaceful society police has a vital role to play but unfortunately it is here India is in making gulf between communities. At a Mumbai flyover a school boy was caught for rough driving, the police officer asks for driving license and when he had the license in hand where a Muslim name was inscribed in it he gores over the boy saying 'kidar ko bomb phorna hain' (where are you going to drop the bomb)? The boy angrily responses what rubbish are you talking about sir? The officer replies 'saly pher itna speed se keyu bhaga raha hain?' (Bullshit (sic) then why are you driving this fast?)
We all must abide by the law and make our policing physically transparent to punish all the criminals whosoever or whatever political party or organization he may belong to and protect all innocent peoples from the least humiliation, was also one of the clear and underlined messages that Deoband declaration wanted to convey to the world. It is the execution of justice which ensures trust of a person on the constitution of a country and the trust leads to love and longing with the nation. You cannot create patriot, they are born out of longing and belong to the system from within, argues the scholars at the Deoband conference.
Maulana Arshad Madni, Dean in Darul Uloom Deoband went a little far and demanded to the government of India for visible equal justice for all. He said "either you declare India a Hindu Rashtra or give all citizens equal justice" he claimed injustice has gradually crossed all limit.
Let us unite to work to instill trust in us and begin every investigation from an equal point without being pre-occupied by one sided notions, is the voice in Muslims streets. Some times real culprits are moving around freely and instead innocents are behind the bar for no wrong of their own, fueling further terror causes.
The theme of the Deoband conference is 'terrorism' is deplorable, unacceptable in any form whatsoever, anywhere in the world; and it belongs to no religion. Terrorism is no body's monopoly— Mahatma Gandhi, two Indian Prime Ministers, Sri Lankan President, two US presidents were assassinated by terrorists, not Muslims, thus the idea 'every Muslims may not be terrorist but every terrorist is a Muslim' is sic and factually wrong.
M. Burhanuddin Qasmi is editor of Eastern Crescent, a Deoband alumnus and director of Mumbai based Markazul Ma'arif Education and Research Centre.

Islamic Madarsas and their role in India
Monday March 03, 2008 (1632 PST)
Tanveer Jafri
"India is accepted as a country that inhabits the largest Muslim population in the world. Not only this, a noted group of the Muslims in the Islam that is known as the Deobandi group has the greatest & the most ancient centre in a Deoband town of India. This madarsa, which is the greatest & the most ancient in the world, famous as Darul Uloom was established in 1866. It is being accused that religious teachers who get education in these madarsas, are misguiding the youths & carry them on the path of terrorism, directly or indirectly. Obviously, under these circumstances, it was necessary from this greatest Islamic madarsa of the world to express his authoritative views to the world that what the views of the Darul Uloom Deoband are regarding the Islami terrorism.
For this objective, last days, the Darul Uloom called a conference of about 6000 madarsa representatives of India, in Darul Uloom Deoband. A declaration was made in this conference that the Darul Uloom & the other madarsas that are under it, have no link with the terrorism & the terrorists. In this conference, the present Muslim scholars & the madarsa teachers were appealed to not to be influenced by the anti-Islam & the anti-national powers & not to try to protect them. And they should oppose them to the maximum. This conference that held in the Deoband town of the Uttar Pradesh is considered the biggest Islamic conference ever held in India. A notable feature of this conference was that, not only persons from the Deobandi thought but the Shiites, the Sufis & the Ahle Hadis representatives were also invited among the many other Muslim groups. In this conference, all the terrorist activities happened in the entire world were announced to be anti-Islamic. All the scholars present, & the madarsa teachers criticized the violence & the terrorism & made an anti-terrorism declaration..."
"In this conference, all the madarsa teachers were advised to remain away from all such activities & not to give asylum to the anti-social elements, to unveil them & to oppose them. The organizers of this conference were unhappy that the Islam was being insulted because of the terrorism."
"...But despite this praiseworthy declaration & appeal of the madarsa, will there be a refusal of the world's blame on the madarsa that there is no teaching of hardcore communalism through them? If not so, why was Musharraf compelled to do Operation Red Mosque in Islamabad? What was the thought that influenced the students of that madarsa? How & why, so dangerous weapons reached that madarsa? What is the talibani thought? From where is the talibani or extreme Islamic thoughts are nurtured? Who is Moulana Masood Azhar or other persons who spit out poison? From where did they get the teaching of spreading communalism & terrorism?"

“Motherland” is a noun denoting the country where you were born. There are quite a few users on here from India.
Whats motherland in urdu? Since the conference was probably in urdu. I daresay it is not bharat-mata, could be just "abai mulk" which was translated to motherland.

Ulema al Hind played major possitive roles in the Islamic history of India. But they had their ups and downs. Many conflicting groups had this name.
It was also Ulema al Hind's decision to propogate not Migrating to Pakistan nor have one whole state as Pakistan consisting of the western Parts of India.
Moreover it was they who insisted to stay as Muslims in a seperate Hindu land, part of the reason why almost all the Indian staes surrounding Bangladesh (such as Assam, Meghalay, Tripura, Manipur and largest [in population] with 40% [50% after Partition] Muslims is West Bengal) has large muslim populations under oppression.
