Assalamu aleykum

Does anyone think, that playing cards, could be OK, if one were to remove pictures, and the loser is to make push-ups, and there is no gambling involved? As I understood from islamQA, main reason for it being forbidden, is gambling, pictures and waste of time. But if these are removed?

Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa salaam) did not like these kind of games. He said:

He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine. (sahih bukhari, kitabush shair, book 28, hadith no. 5612)

Instead play more better games, like foot race.

Question: Is it unlawful to play with playing cards even when there is no betting involved?

Answered by the Scientific Research Committee - IslamToday.net

Al-Salām `Alaykum wa Rahmah Allah wa Barakātuh.

It is permissible to play with cards if it does not involve betting or gambling.

However, let me remind you of the importance of time in our life. Muslims have many more serious things waiting to be done. Our pious and rightly-guided predecessors were far more concerned about their time than their wealth. It would be so much better if our young people, when they get together, could rather read a useful book like Riyad al-Sālihīn.

Educational card games for children, however, are not only permissible, they are a productive use of time.

Playing "cards" is one thing, but playing a card game that is of a "gambling nature" is totally different.

We need to understand the difference. There are so many games we can play with cards that is not of a gambling nature, and those games, as I understand is mubah.

However what about playing poker with play chips?
This is a question I asked in another thread but no one answered.

Although it does not involve gambling-- it does bring someone close to it. I know a lot of people who started playing with play chips, but then when they became quite good at it, they started to play with some money. Some also started playing the online betting version.

So the least we can say, is that it is makrooh, if not haram, to play games that is of a gambling nature as it effectively equips the player with gambling techniques which takes him closer to that haram-- especially living in the west, were it is easy to gamble. Allahu A'lam, but this is what I understand.

However maybe the knowledgeable brothers/sisters would want to put some light on to this matter.

How about chess then? Many scholars, according to islam qa, considered it haram, but on islamtoday, Sh. al Awda says that is OK to play chess?

I've heard the narration on playing chess is considered da'eef. A student of Shaykh Muqbil rahimahullah told me he graded it da'eef. Allaahu'3lam.

I don't know the issue with Chess, but how is chess the same as a game of "gambling nature"???

If chess is haram, then it will be for other reasons, not because it is or leads to gambling.

My point is about playing card games that is of a gambling nature.

the issue with chess, as far as im aware, is the pieces are of an idolic nature and it can be construed to be a waste of time

ive heard that Ali (ra) said it was haram, if anyone has the narration it would be appreciated
