Bismillah.

Alhamdulillah was-salaatu was-salaamu ala Rasulullah.

As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.

Can someone help me with the following, which has been bugging me for years now. Does anyone know the origin of this well known proverb?
"If Muhammad won't go to the mountain, the mountain must go to Muhammad."
Before I became Muslim, I assumed that this saying was Islamic in origin, however I have only ever heard this saying from the lips of the Kuffar, so I've been wondering for years how this saying came about.

wa salaam.
