Ibn Abbas:
Abu al-‘Abbas ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas, radiyallahu anhuma, reported: One day I was behind the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, and he said to me:
"O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice] : Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you (have need to) ask, ask of Allah; and if you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that even if the Nation (or the whole community) were to gather together to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you with anything except that which Allah has already recorded for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with something, they would not be able to harm you with anything except that which Allah has already recorded against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried."
[Al-Tirmidhi relates this and says: It is a good, genuine Hadith]
In a version other than that of al-Tirmidhi it reads:
"..Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship."

It is reported from ‘Abdullaah bin ‘Abbaas – may Allaah be pleased with them – that he said:
“After Allaah’s Messenger – Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him - passed away, I said to a man from the Ansaar, “Come, let us ask [and learn from] the Prophet’s Companions, Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon him, for they are many in number today.”
He replied, “I am surprised at you Ibn ‘Abbaas – do you really think people need you when there are so many Companions of the Prophet?”
So he did not involve himself in this endeavor, but I busied myself asking [the Companions about issues]. If I heard of a hadeeth being reported by a man, I would come to him and if he was taking his midday nap I would lay down my garment and lie outside waiting for him, with the wind blowing dust in my face. The man would come out [for Dhuhr] and see me in that state, and he would exclaim, “O nephew of Allaah’s Messenger! What has brought you here? You should have sent for me and I would have come to you!” I would say, “Rather I should come to you [to seek knowledge].” I would then ask him about the hadeeth I heard.
The man [who I originally invited to seek knowledge with me] remained as he was, and when he saw how people would gather around me [to seek knowledge] he said, “For sure, this young man was more intelligent than me.”

Ibn Mesood and the 2 youth That killed Abu Jahl
Two very young Muslim youths from the Ansaar, Hazrat Muaz bin Ufra (R.A.) and Hazrat Muaz bin Amr bin Jamooh (R.A.) had taken a vow to kill Abu Jahl. They had strong feelings of dislike for Abu Jahl as he had treated Rasulullah with extreme abuse. Abu Jahl deserved death for his wickedness. When Abu Jahl was pointed out to them, the youth set upon him, riddled his body with wounds and left him for dead on the ground.
Rasulullah ’s mind at this stage was more occupied with the fate of Abu Jahl than with that of any of his other enemies. Rasulullah asked someone to find the whereabouts of Abu Jahl. Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A.) went out in search and found him in the midst of a pile of corpses. The chief of the idolaters was still breathing. Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A.) placed his foot on the dying enemy’s neck and said:
‘O enemy of Allah! See how Allah has humiliated you’.
Saying this Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A.) was about to sever his neck when Abu Jahl shouted:
‘Have you ever seen a noble fellow as I, murdered by such an ignoble ploughman?’
To put an end to the infidel’s insults, Hazrat Abdullha bin Mas’ood (R.A.) cut off the head and brought it to Rasulullah . At the sight of the blood-stained face of the enemy, Rasulullah exclaimed:
‘Surely, this man was the detestable Pharaoh of his nation’.
