INTERVIEWS

JANETTE BELMAR (http://www.cageprisoners.com/interviews.php?aid=2453)

Janette Belmar is the sister of Richard Belmar, one of the four remaining Britons in Guantanamo Bay. Born and raised as a Catholic, Richard converted to Islam when he was 16. After travelling to Pakistan in the summer of 2001 to study the Qur’an, Richard was arrested and transported to Cuba, where he continues to be held. In this rare interview, Cageprisoners.com spoke to his younger sister about how the family has come to terms with his incarceration and about the brother she desperately misses…

CAMPAIGNS: Messages of Support to Tahira Tabassum (http://forums.cageprisoners.com/showthread.php?p=2294)

"I can't tell you how low I was feeling. I was in a cell for 22 hours, I needed support, I needed my family around me, I was constantly crying…but I was in prison.”

In the first week of July 2004, 28-year old Briton Tahira Tabassum was acquitted of all charges after being arrested for failure to notify the authorities on the activities of her husband, 27-year old Briton Omar Sharif who drowned near Tel Aviv in April 2003 after an alleged suicide bombing in a Tel Aviv cafe.

When news of her husband's alleged involvement in the above bombing broke, Tahira Tabassum, the mother of three children, the youngest of which she had just given birth to two months prior, was arrested by British Anti-Terrorist Police and charged with failure to disclose information about a terrorist attack. She was kept in solitary confinement for 22 hours a day in Belmarsh Prison in South East London.

Tahira Tabassum, the now single mother of three children, is now trying to rebuild her life after her mistreatment at the hands of British authorities. Send her a message of support on this forum and Cageprisoners.com will endeavour to ensure that she reads them.

How the Home Office Hoodwinks British Muslims (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2402)
by Prisoners of West
The British Home Office has become particularly skilful at hoodwinking Muslims. In the last two weeks they have managed to do it twice. Mind you its not that difficult to pull the wool over Muslims’ eyes when you have politically inept and naïve Moderate (domesticated) Muslims for whom the chance of a cup of tea with Government officials is viewed as a sign of their influence.

by Khaled Shawkat
The dilemma currently suffered by Muslim communities in the West - forcing some to even be discreet about their faith in public for fear of security measures – is similar to the sufferings of the Muslims of Andalusia in the 16th century when they faced deportation and judicial trials.

'Ghost Detainees' at Camp Delta (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2421)

by Suzanne Goldenberg
The Pentagon’s decision to exclude some Guantánamo prisoners from review offers further evidence for a secret network at Guantánamo, akin to that at Abu Ghraib, whereby "ghost detainees" were under the control of the CIA and not the US military, and never officially entered on the prison's books.

War and Liberties: The Supreme Court (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2428)
Detainees at Guantanamo may begin to challenge their designation in federal court for the first time next week. Margaret Warner explains the Pentagon’s move by turning to Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice; and David Rivkin, a lawyer in private practice who served in the first Bush and Reagan administration, and is an advisor to the current administration on terrorism- related legal matters.
