Asalaamu alaikum
Erm.. i dno of any links to articles. Sorry for the length.
But here's some traps they fell into (I'll put a red X next to the mistakes);
They were guided first, during the life of Prophets' Isshaaq [Isaac son of Ibrahim], & his son Ya'qub [Jacob].
Prophet Ya'qub had many sons, including Prophet Yusuf [Joseph], and his other 10 brothers who kidnapped him. X
Prophet Yusuf became king at the end of that narrative. He forgave his brothers for what they had done, and the bani Israel became a superpower of Egypt (bani Israel was limited to around 12 brothers at that time - 10 bros who kidnapped from one mother, and 2 - Yusuf and Binyamin from another mother.)
Time passes by, and their numbers grow.. it's likely that many became attached to dunya, and that is the Sunnah of Allah. That He honors people when they affirm to Islam, but He humbles them so they may return to His religion after they become too attached to this worldly life.
So it's likely that in between this period, many among Bani Israel became attached to the worldly life and therefore by the time Prophet Musa [Moses] is sent, they're all slaves of the Pharaohs', and although huger in number from the start - they are the lowest class of people. The tables have turned over a period of a millennium, more or less maybe.
When they are in Egypt as the slaves of the Pharoahs', they become influenced by their philosophies. I.e. they even felt that they need to see Allah clearly in order to believe in Him. Maybe because Pharoah told his people that he was god, they also felt that they needed to see God to believe in Him? X
And when you said: O Musa! we will not believe in you until we see Allah manifestly, so the punishment overtook you while you looked on.
[Qur'an 2: 55]
They continuously abuse Prophet Musa throughout his life. X
O ye who believe! Be ye not like those who vexed and insulted Moses, but Allah cleared him of the (calumnies) they had uttered: and he was honourable in Allah's sight. [Qur'an 33: 69]
(There are also many examples from the Sunnah where they accuse him of having illnesses which he never really had etc, and annoying him by asking too much unnecessary questions i.e. what color cow should we slaughter? [Qur'an 2:69] etc - when non of this would really effect their religious faith at all.)
They see the miracles of the Prophets clearly before them, i.e. the river Nile parting in front of their own eyes - but they still remain questioning the religion. X
Once they're free from Egypt and the Pharaoh and his people have drowned in the Nile, Allah sends them Manna and Quails (high class and expensive foods even today) - but they ask for other foods which aren't expensive. Showing their ungratefulness X after so much blessings Allah gave them for choosing them from the rest of mankind.
And We gave you the shade of clouds and sent down to you Manna and quails, saying: "Eat of the good things We have provided for you:" (But they rebelled); to us they did no harm, but they harmed their own souls. [Qur'an 2: 57]
And remember ye said: "O Moses! we cannot endure one kind of food (always); so beseech thy Lord for us to produce for us of what the earth groweth, -its pot-herbs, and cucumbers, Its garlic, lentils, and onions." He said: "Will ye exchange the better for the worse? Go ye down to any town, and ye shall find what ye want!" They were covered with humiliation and misery; they drew on themselves the wrath of Allah. This because they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah and slaying His Messengers without just cause. This because they rebelled and went on transgressing.
[Qur'an 2: 61]
During this time - one day Prophet Musa is called to talk to Allah on Mount Sinai.
The explanation is given in detail in Surah Ta-Ha as to what they did, but basically - whilst Prophet Moses was away on Mount Sinai to talk to Allah - there was a man called Samiri who encouraged the people to make a golden calf from the jewels they had taken from Egypt. Then they started worshipping it although Prophet Harun [Aaron] was with them - they continued to disobey him. X
Check it out from Surah Ta-Ha 20: 83 (http://tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=20&tid=32308)and further.
So during this time, many actually commited shirk X and made an idol to worship during the presence of their Prophets. Showing the extent of their rebellion and influence from the Egyptian/Pharoah society.
After this, they reached Palestine which Allah had promised them (so long as they believed in Allah, Established Prayer, Gave the charity of Zakah, and believed in His Messengers.)
Allah did aforetime take a covenant from the Children of Israel, and we appointed twelve captains among them. And Allah said: "I am with you: if ye (but) establish regular prayers, practise regular charity, believe in my messengers, honour and assist them, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan, verily I will wipe out from you your evils, and admit you to gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you, after this, resisteth faith, he hath truly wandered from the (true) path." [Qur'an 5: 12]
Anyway, when they were told to enter the land of Palestine to fight against the people who occupied it (Goliat/Jaloot etc.) - they became scared and rebelled against Prophet Musa.
They said: O Moses! We will never enter (the land) while they are in it. So go thou and thy Lord and fight! We will sit here. X
He [Moses] said: "O my Lord! I have power only over myself and my brother: so separate us from this rebellious people!"
Allah said: "Therefore will the land be out of their reach for forty years: In distraction will they wander through the land: But sorrow thou not over these rebellious people.
[Qur'an 5: 24-6]
I think the scholars of Qur'an and Tafsir have explained that these people actually died during this time period - who rebelled against Allah and His Prophets'. Now there was a new generation who was fit enough to fight against Goliath and the people who occupied the blessed land.
Prophet Musa only saw Palestine, and died on that spot. So he was not able to enter it due to the rebellion of his people.
Prophet Dawud [David] opened Palestine and killed Goliath.
So they routed them by Allah's leave and David slew Goliath; and Allah gave him the kingdom and wisdom, and taught him of that which He willeth. And if Allah had not repelled some men by others the earth would have been corrupted. But Allah is a Lord of Kindness to (His) creatures. [Qur'an 2: 251]
After him, Prophet Sulaiman - the son of Dawud was king. During his lifetime, many of the children of Israel were influenced by the magic which was prevailant in society. Some may have become magicians X and this idea is still widespread today*, but anyway - Allah honored the true believers by giving them kingdom and continuously sending them Prophets for guidance.
-----------------------------------------------------
*Many Jews today are attempting to take down Masjid Al Aqsa because Prophet Sulaiman used to place the texts of magicians under his throne [so that magic would not become widespread. He expanded Masjid Al Aqsa, and probably had his throne there? (Prophet Ya'qub originally built Masjid Al Aqsa.)]
However, once Prophet Sulaiman died - shaytan came in the form of a human and told the people to check under his throne, they were surprised to figure out that Prophet Sulaiman had magic scrolls under his seat, and Shaytan fooled the people to make them think Prophet Sulaiman did magic, although he only kept the scrolls under his throne to prevent people from accessing the magic.
Some Jews even say evil about Prophet Sulaiman [Solomon], and many Jews do magic X since they were influenced by the magicians during the time of Pharoah (in between the time of Prophet Yusuf and Musa.) This remains a practise among many today. And Allah knows best.

With wealth, comes attachment to the world aswell.
So, guess what? Over some centuries, the 'scholars' of the Bani Israel reverted back to their old ways. They became traders and sold merchandise in the places of worship! X The Byzantine Romans' had become rulers of Palestine, and sometimes the Persians' [due to continuous warfare over the blessed lands.]
The jews were humiliated again by Allah due to their attachment of the world, and rebellion. It's likely that they rebelled severely against the Prophets. So Allah expelled them twice from the holy land.
And We gave (Clear) Warning to the Children of Israel in the Book, that twice would they do mischief on the earth and be elated with mighty arrogance (and twice would they be punished)!
When the first of the warnings came to pass, We sent against you Our servants given to terrible warfare: They entered the very inmost parts of your homes; and it was a warning (completely) fulfilled.
Then did We grant you the Return as against them: We gave you increase in resources and sons, and made you the more numerous in man-power.
If ye did well, ye did well for yourselves; if ye did evil, (ye did it) against yourselves. So when the second of the warnings came to pass, (We permitted your enemies) to disfigure your faces, and to enter your Temple as they had entered it before, and to visit with destruction all that fell into their power.
It may be that your Lord may (yet) show Mercy unto you; but if ye revert (to your sins), We shall revert (to Our punishments): And we have made Hell a prison for those who reject (all Faith).
[Qur'an Surah Bani Isra'il 17:4-8]
The details of them events are discussed in Tafsir Ibn Kathir:
http://tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=17&tid=28569
Many of Bani Israel were under the rule of the Byzantine Romans' now [the Romans in Al-Sham (greater Syria) during the time of Prophet Muhammad (saws)], they were only 'spiritual' leaders, although they were probably the worst among them - since they actually used to speak and call their people against the truth. Or their deeds were different to what they preached. Allaahu a'lam.
Anyway, so Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) and 'Eesa (Jesus son of Mary) were born. I think they were cousins and of similar ages. The Jews killed their Prophet Yahya X, they slandered the mother of 'Eesa by accusing her of adultery X, and they even attempted to kill Prophet 'Eesa X.
If they're killing the Prophets' - they are doing what? They've broken their covenant with Allah, because part of the covenant was;
Allah said: "I am with you: if ye (but) establish regular prayers, practise regular charity, believe in my messengers, honour and assist them... [Qur'an 5: 12]
They stopped assisting the Messengers', rather - instead, they killed them!
Allah even tells us;
And when it is said to them, Believe in what Allah has revealed, they say: We believe in that which was revealed to us; and they deny what is besides that, while it is the truth verifying that which they have. Say: Why then did you kill Allah's Prophets before if you were indeed believers? [Qur'an 2: 91]
So now, the blessed land (of Palestine) is for the believers. Allah has saved it for them, and this is why it does not belong to the Jews today. Yet Allah has removed it from the feet of the believers, because many Muslims' have done similar to what the Jews of old did - they rebelled and turned away from Allah's Message - so He removed it from their feet, until we can prove that we are worthy of it.
Just to end that off, i want to quote a hadith from Sahih Al Bukhari;
Sahih Al Bukhari Volume 9, Book 92, Number 422: (http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/bukhari/092.sbt.html#009.092.422)
(http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/bukhari/092.sbt.html#009.092.422) Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri:
The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wasalam) said,
[B]"You will follow the ways of those nations who were before you, span by span and cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch) so much so that even if they entered a hole of a mastigure (a lizard), you would follow them."
We said, "O Allah's Apostle! (Do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?" He said, "Whom else?"
However, there are some good Jews:

This has got me thinking - Where did the term 'Banee Israeel' originate from?
Banee Israeel literally means 'Children of Israel' - Is this 'Israel' the state or something else??
If it is the state - then how can this be since it didn't exist until 1948?? :confused:

Banee Israeel = children of Ya'qoob
''All food was lawful to the children of israel, except what israel made unlawful for himself before the taurat was revealed. Say (O Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) Bring here the taurat and recite it, if you are truthful.'' (Ale Imran 93)

As in the Prophet Ya'qoob who had 12 sons? Father of Prophet Yusuf and Binyamin?

Israel is Prophet Ya`qub (Jacob)
http://tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=2&tid=1736 (http://tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=2&tid=1736) [Tafsir ibn Kathir - Al Baqarah]
Israel is Prophet Ya`qub, for Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi recorded that `Abdullah Ibn `Abbas said, "A group of Jews came to the Prophet and he said to them,
«åóáú ÊóÚúáóãõæäó Ãóäøó ÅöÓúÑóÇÆöíáó íóÚúÞõæÈõ¿»
(Do you know that Israel is Jacob) They said, "Yes, by Allah.'' He said,
«Çááøóåõãøó ÇÔúåóÏ»
(O Allah! Be witness.)''
At-Tabari recorded that `Abdullah Ibn `Abbas said that `Israel' means, `the servant of Allah.'

The reason why all the Jews are called Bani Israel (children of Israel) is because he (Israel/Ya'qub) had 12 sons altogether, and from them the 12 tribes of Jews formed.
That's why Allah reminds us of a blessing and miracle which Allah bestowed upon Moses for the Bani Israel (amazingly its mentioned twice in the Qur'an i think);
We divided them into twelve tribes or nations. We directed Moses by inspiration, when his (thirsty) people asked him for water: "Strike the rock with thy staff": out of it there gushed forth twelve springs: Each group knew its own place for water. We gave them the shade of clouds, and sent down to them manna and quails, (saying): "Eat of the good things We have provided for you": (but they rebelled); to Us they did no harm, but they harmed their own souls. [Qur'an 7: 160]
And remember Moses prayed for water for his people; We said: "Strike the rock with thy staff." Then gushed forth therefrom twelve springs. Each group knew its own place for water. So eat and drink of the sustenance provided by Allah, and do no evil nor mischief on the (face of the) earth. (Qur'an 2: 60)
