What exactly is Rep Power (reputation power, if that is true) anyway?

As far as I understand, you can give ppl positive or negative reputation, this being an alternative to banning some annoying users and appreciating the good ones. Why would anyone object to it?

The forum looks a little different...
There used to be an option (linking from Quick Links) at the top, “Today’s posts” – is that still accessible?

Forget what I said , thats not it , if you like someone's post you can add to his reputation through the little scale icon.

LOL someone gave me rep points for this thread.

Anyway, I have seen it used on other forum(s).

1. It is not needed.

2. It could be a source of kibr.

I did notice, however, that it does not tell you who gave you the rep point. The other time I saw it, it tells you who repped you. So if that was the case I would've added a #3 problem of giving reps to opposite gender, but I guess nevermind.

edit:

I should've said 'suggest' instead of 'vote.' My mistake.

Some of the other changes to the forum look quite neat (tag search etc), but I agree with jund-al-islam and have some reservations about this rep point thing (sorry to be a spoil sport dear mods - looks like you've been working hard).

For one thing this forum has never been one about building reputation, but more to with changing thoughts, ideas and attitudes towards revolution. It's never been about building an internet personality but more towards bringing benefit to this cause and to the ummah.

Sincere muslims will have the imaan and the fear of Allah to stop them from writing nonsense and being rude. The annoying members here won't be inhibited by having poor rep points. I think they're already quite aware of their notoriety, are here to make fitnah anyway and won't care less.

Also I'm sure some users will end up doing childish things like 'disapproving' posts made by certain people etc or cheerleading others.

And yes it could lead to having pride and wanting to show off.

...on the other hand, the advantages of having a reputation system are several:

1) People who contribute positively well be appreciated
2) An average user will know the right people to discuss issues with
3) It will encourage people to contribute positively
4) It will discourage others from contributing negatively, especially within our system where people hardly get banned

There is nothing wrong with rewarding a person materially in order to encourage him to do good or discourage him from evil. One of the Salaf would give in charity each time he spoke ill of someone until he stopped backbiting for love of wealth, as he claimed. His main intention, however, was to rid himself of evil for Allah's sake. Similarly, if a person's intention is for the sake of Allah alone, there is nothing wrong with presenting material incentives to encourage them to do good.

Kids are similarly encouraged to recite the Quran by being given two incentives, pleasing Allah and material reward.

alghayb
2nd July 2008, 06:16 AM
It says my rep power when looking at any of my posts is 'Rep Power: 1'. However, when I click on the scales with says I have 10 rep points.

I would like to know, as others would also:

1) why the discrepency?
2) how do I find out who gave me the points
3) why I was given the points
4) which posts of mine received the points

Shukran

Personally I see no benefit at all, one cannot know what type of comments are being made and whether or not their posts are approved of or not. Plus, obviously there are people who will approve of some and disprove of others and without knowing what the rep points are (praise vs. criticism) one (who is sincere) won't benefit whatsoever. Maybe this will just get people to post more, although quality is better then quantity. Or is it that the moderators can view the comments and the members cannot?

Allahu A'lam as to the benefit of it.

Gimme Rep and I give you rep. The cardinal rule.

'Abd al-Kareem
2nd July 2008, 09:49 AM
I find only one use for this rep system:

It would be fun to give clowns like mika a lot of negative rep points.

If someone is coming to spam and mess around, then he wouldn't care about his 'reputation.' And like brother green_Musalla said: this forum was never about gaining a reputation and making a name for oneself or for being known.

It will certainly not tell me who is good to discuss with and who isn't, because I presume the main use of this thing will be as it is used on other forums: cheerleading and disagreeing. If someone is disagreeing (despite the fact that he was very respectful and presented his opinion in a nice way, intending to discuss) he will expect much negative rep. I can guess most comments will be
'you damn madkhali,'
'no one wants to hear your opinion talafi,'
'hey you jihadi extremist go preach your alqaeda junk somewhere else,'
'oh that's a great post! how much is the govt paying you?'
'where'd you read that - CNN?'
'shut up jihadi'

With that said, at least [try to] enable the function that the user can turn it off from his or her own User CP. If he or she does so, his rep will not appear green or red, it'll be black and he can't receive rep anymore.

Anikaa
2nd July 2008, 09:55 AM
lol @ the negative comments.

That's why i believe, and will always believe that banning is much more effective.

Then again, this forum is not the same without a bunch of hot heads

Ok brothers and sisters, I think it's best for us to see how it works out for now insha'Allah. If it's a total flop we can always reconsider it and possibly remove it otherwise, who knows it might make things a little better around here.

For the time being, you can browse around & see the new features installed some of which are:

- Giving your Profile a makeover/Public messaging
- Making your own albums/picture gallery e.g. What I've done here (http://forums.islamicawakening.com/album.php?albumid=1)
- Spam management/prevention
- New moderation tools for the admin/mods :)
- Thread Tagging/Prefixes
- Feeds and Social Bookmarking
- And more...

Abu Maysara

interesting....i guess its a way to get rid of troublemakers like me maybe....and it is not always high rep point means a positive contribution...it only reflects ppl agreeing with this persons opinion whether he is a deviant or not..his/her comment could in fact be negative for some but positive for others (cheerleaders)

and why do all the mods have rep point 10 lol

hmm..that was a good catch...

First a certain freedom was given and now ways are sought to take it away...at least so it seems, I'm still not understanding the benefit, especially when it is allowed for people to say something about each other without the peson knowing what was said, if the mods can view the comments it sort of falls into backbiting, almost, doesn't it?

Abuz Zubair

As the brother pointed out, you can check your reputations, who gave you reputation and the comments by clicking on User CP on the top left of the screen. The rep power is increased over a period of time. Members with good rep can give more rep to others.

Rep is NOT to be abused by giving neg rep just because someone says something you do not like. A negative rep should only be given when someone abuses, insults or constantly makes annoying one-liner posts. If someone feels he/she has been wrongly given neg rep, just let us know and we will remove it. This, in my opinion, is better than banning a person - even if he be annoying.

Bear in mind that this is just a testing phase. If it works out, fine, if it doesn't, we'll get rid of it.

brother, I clicked on User CP already and see nothing! I even clicked on my own name which led me to details about my posts and also nothing! Besides, if you're just trying it out then fine, but come on, people don't respect each other publicly nor some of the forums' policy and say whatever they feel like saying, I doubt this effort of yours will make much difference. Anyway, how did I get ten points? I can't see who gave them to me and why.

Reputation system is useless.

Originally it was devised for the technical forums. People would give rep to those whose advice would help them solve the problem, so people with more technical knowledge would have a higher rap, which would help new members decide whose advice to follow.
However, this system is ineffective because some people’s vanities were hurt cause they didn’t have a better rep. So two of them would rep each other over and over until they get the reputation they think they deserve.

I just checked it out using a test account and confirmed that you CAN see your total points plus the positive/negative comments on a particular post. You cannot see who gave you the points, though, but it ain't a big deal, is it!

You can see your points by clicking on User CP (http://forums.islamicawakening.com/usercp.php) link as found in the top left corner of the screen. I have attached a screen-dump of User CP for you all to see.

The system has its own way of calculating Rep powers for various members. It all depends many factors:

1) Register Date Factor, as in when you actually registered on the forums.

2) Post Count Factor, as in how many posts you have made so far.

3) Reputation Point Factor, how many reputation points you have gained so far.

4) Minimum Post Count, how many posts must you have before your reputation hits count on others.

5) Minimum Reputation Count, how much reputation must you have before your reputation hits count on others.
