Silence is Salvation

الحمد الله
On the authority of Jabir bin ‘AbduLlah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “The most beloved to me and the closest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those of you who have the best attitudes. And the hateful to me and the furthest from me on the Day of Resurrection will be the thartharoon, al-mutashaddiqoon and al-mutafayhiqoon.” The Sahabah رضي الله عنه said, “O’ Messenger of Allah, we understand thartharoon and al-mutashaddiqoon, so who are the al-mutafayhiqoon?” The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Those who arrogant in their speech.”
[Sunan at-Tirmidhi]
The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “The servant of Allah at times utters one word of the Pleasure of Allah to which he attaches no importance but for that one word Allah سبحانه و تعالى raises him many grades. The servant of Allah at times utters one word of the Displeasure of Allah to which he attaches no importance but for that one word, he falls in Jahannam.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]
On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, “Once the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم asked the Sahabah, ‘Do you know who the poor and destitute person is amongst you?’ The Sahabah said, ‘O’ Messenger of Allah, amongst us the poor and the destitute person is recognised as being one who has no wealth and no possessions and truly that what we think is poor and destitute is.’ Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, ‘The poor and destitute person in my Ummah will be he who will come in the Day of Judgement, with the reward of Salah, Siyam, Zakah but he will come in such a way that during his life time he would have verbally abused a person, slandered another person, he would have unlawfully taken the wealth of another, he would have shed the blood of another, he would physically hit another so Allah سبحانه و تعالى will Judge between them and each of these people who had been wronged will be given of his good deeds as compensation of their suffering. If his good deeds expire before he is able to pay that which due on him then their sis will be taken from them and be placed on their shoulders and then he will be thrown in fire.’”
[Sahih Muslim]
On the authority of Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه, Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “A man’s Iman is never perfect until his heart is straight and man’s heart can never be straight until his tongue is straight. That man will never enter Jannah whose neighbour fears his problems and his inconvenience.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad]
On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “”He who believes in Allah and the final Day, let him not hurt and inconvenience his neighbour. He who believes in Allah and the final Day, let him honour his guest that is the sign of the person’s Iman. He who believes in Allah and the final Day, let him say something good otherwise let him remain silent.” [Sahihayn]
On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “It is sufficient for a man to be sinful that he narrates everything he hears.” [Sunan Abi Dawud]
On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “It is sufficient for a man to be a liar that he narrates everything he hears.” [Sahih Muslim]
On the authority of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم, “A believer does not become a perfect believer until he abandons lying, even as a joke. Until he gives up arguing and debating even if he may be upon the truth and he may be right.” [Sunan Abi Dawud]
The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “…fasting is a shield therefore, when one of you is fasting on a particular day, let him not speak offensively let him not shout abusively. If someone swears at him or abuses him, or argues with him, then let him simply say, ‘I am a man who is fasting!’” [Sahih al-Bukhari]
On the authority of ‘AbduLlah bin ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “He who withholds his tongue, Allah سبحانه و تعالى will conceal his faults.”
On the authority of ‘Uqbah bin ‘Aamir رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said asked, “O’ Prophet! What is salvation? How can I be saved?” He صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Withhold your tongue, withhold your tongue and let your house confine you and weep over your sins. If you do these three things, that these are means of salvation.” [Sunan at-Tirmidhi and Musnad Imam Ahmad]
On the authority of ‘AbduLlah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “To abuse a Muslim is Fusooq and to fight with a Muslim is an act of Kufr” [Sahih al-Bukhari]
On the authority of ‘AbduLlah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “A Believer is one who doesn’t curse all the time, nor is he one who forever taunts others, nor he is the one who is offensive or lewd in his speech but a believer is pure of all of these things. Speaking a lot is a sign of hypocrisy. Speaking little is a sign of faith.” [Mustadrak al Hakim, Musnad Imam Ahmad and others]
On the authority of Abu Umamah al Bahri رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Modest and bashfulness and speaking little are two of the branches of Faith. And speaking offensively and being abusive and talking a lot are two branches of hypocrisy”
[Sunan at-Tirmidhi]
On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghiffari رضي الله عنه, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Solitude is far better than bad company and good company is far better than solitude. To say something good is better than remaining silent but remaining silent is far better than saying something evil.” [Mustadrak al Hakim and Shu’bal Iman Imam al Bayhaqi]
On the authority of ‘AbduLlah bin ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said “The one who remained silent, has saved himself.” [Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad, Sunan ad-Darimi]
On the authority of Sufyan ibn ‘AbdiLlah ath-Thaqafi رضي الله عنه, “I asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said ‘O’ Prophet of Allah, tell me something that I can adhere to!’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم replied, ‘Say, ‘I believe in Allah and remain firm and steadfast upon that.” I then asked, ‘O’ Prophet of Allah, ‘What do you fear for me the most?” He صلى الله عليه و سلم took hold of his tongue and said, ‘This!’” [Sunan at-Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah]
On the authority of Abu Ayyub رضي الله عنه that a man approached the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم and said, “O’ Prophet of Allah, give me some advice and be brief.” He صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “When you stand up to pray the Salah, perform the Salah of a departing person. Do not say anything for which you have to apologise tomorrow and convince yourself and despair of the possessions people have.” [Sunan at-Tirmidhi]
On the authority of Mu’adh bin Jabal رضي الله عنه, “One day we were travelling and I managed to get close to the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم on my mount and I said to him, ‘O’ Prophet of Allah, tell me something which will distance me from the fire of Hell and which will take me to Jannah.’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, ‘O’ Mu’adh, indeed you have asked for a great thing, one thing that will save you from the fire of Hell and take you to Jannah. O’ Mu’adh you have asked a great thing but surely it easy for those whom Allah will make it easy.’ Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, ‘Worship Allah in such a way that you do not commit any Shirk with him. Establish Salah, give Zakah, fast in the month of Ramadan and perform the Hajj of the House of Allah.’ Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلمcontinued and said, ‘O’ Mu’adh, should I not tell you of the doors of all good? Fasting for it is a shield, Sadaqah for it extinguishes one’s sins as water extinguishes the fire and praying Salah in the darkness of the night.’ Then he صلى الله عليه و سلم recited the verses, ‘[I]These true servants of Allah, they are those whose sides are kept away from their beds at night. They plead with their Lord and pray to Him, both, in hope and out of fear and what We have bestowed upon on them of that, they spend. For such people, non of these souls knows the good reward and the coolness of eyes that has been prepared for them in the Aakhirah as a reward for the good that they used to do.‘ Then the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم continued and said, ‘O’ Mu’adh, should I not inform of you of the foundation of religion, of the pillar of religion, of the peak of religion? O’ Mu’adh, the foundation of religion is Islam, the pillar of religion is Salah and the peak of religion is Jihad. But O’ Mu’adh, should I not inform you of something that encompasses of all of this?’ I said, ‘Why not O’ Prophet of Allah?’ He صلى الله عليه و سلم took hold of his tongue and said, ‘The thing which encompasses of all these deeds is that you withhold your tongue, is that you withhold your tongue!’ I said, ‘O’ Prophet of Allah, will we be held to account for our tongues utter?’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, ‘May your mother lose you, O’ Mu’adh, do you not realise is there anything else which throws people flat onto their faces in the fire of Jahannam, expect the harvest of their tongues!’” [Musnad Imam Ahmad, Sunan at-Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah]
Husayn ibn ‘Ali رضي الله عنه quotes that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “Part of a person’s being a good Muslim, is that he speaks very little about the things that do not concern him.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad]
Once ‘Isa ibn Maryam عليه سلام was walking along the path and he had his companions with him and a pig was standing there by the road. So he عليه سلام addressed the pig and said to the pig, “You may walk across the path and do not fear no harm shall come to you.” So, one of his companions said, “O’ ‘Isa ibn Maryam, do you say something like this to a pig?” So, ‘Isa ibn Maryam عليه سلام said, “I only say good because I fear unless I say good, I will give my tongue the habit of speaking evil.” [Muwatta' Imam Malik]
