Shortly after the the battle of uhud, the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, said: "Which man will see what has happened to Sa'ad bin Rabee'?...Is he dead or alive?"
So, Muhammed bin Maslama Al-Ansari said, "I will see for you what has happened to Sa'ad".
He found Sa'ad wounded in the battleground amongst the killed, and was told, "The Messenger of Allah has asked me to find out if you are dead or alive?"
Sa'ad replied, "I am with the dead, so please pass my salam to the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, and tell him that Sa'ad bin Rabee' tells you: May Allah reward you best on behalf of a people to their prophet, and pass my salam to your followers and inform them that Sa'ad bin Rabee' says, you have no excuse with Allah if your Prophet is killed amongst you and you are still blinking...)
He soon died and the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, was informed.

It has been narrated that 'Umar bin Khattab, May Allah be pleased with him, met Hudhayfa bin Al-Yaman, May Allah be pleased with him, and asked him, "What is your condition this morning?"
He replied, "I have woken up liking fitnah, hating the haqq, I pray without ablution, and I have on earth what Allah doesn't in the sky"
'Umar was angered by the reply. He entered upon 'Ali bin Abi Taalib, may Allah be pleased with him, and 'Ali noticed that the 'Umar was upset. 'Umar informed him what Hudhayfa had said and 'Ali replied: He has told the truth, O 'Umar.
He likes fitnah meaning that he likes his wealth and children, and hates the haqq meaning that he hates death, he prays without ablution meaning that he prays upon the Prophet without ablution, and he has on earth tha which Allah doesn't have in the sky meaning that he has a wife and child but Allah neither has a spouse nor children.
'Umar replied: You have said the truth, Oh Aba Al-Hassan, and you have removed that in my heart against Hudhayfa.

Ibn Al-Jawzi recounts in his book, Sifat Al-Safwa, a story narrated by Nafee from Ibn 'Umar that Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, prepared an army and sent them on a mission. Amongst the troops was a man named Hudayr. During that year, the Prophet and his people faced a drought and food was scarce. For that reason, the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, specially gave each one in the army more supply of food and drink. However, he forgot to give Hudayr. So, the army began on their trip, and Hudayr was in the back-end of the army, bearing patient without food and seeking the reward from Allah while saying, "La Ilaha Ila Allah, Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulilah, Subhanna Allah, La Hawla wa La quwata Ila bilah" and he said, "This is the best provision, O Lord"
So Jibril came down upon the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, and said:
"Allah has sent me to you to inform you that you have provided your army but you forgot to provide Hudayr. He is in the back of the army repeating la Ilaha Ila Allah, Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulilah, Subhanna Allah, La Hawla wa La quwata Ila bilah" and he says, This is the best provision, O Lord. His speech will have a light on the day of judgement covering that which is between the earth and sky, so send him some food."
The Prophet then ordered a man to carry food and give it to Hudary. He also asked him to remember what Hudayr's reply would be once he gave him the food and tell him that the Prophet, salaha allahu 'alayhi wa salam, said:
The Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, greets you with his salam and informs you that he had forgotton to give you your supply of food, and Allah, All-Mighty, had sent Jibril to remind me of your condition and made me aware of your whereabout"
The person carrying the food finally arrived to Hudayr and as he arrived, he heard Hudayr repeating la Ilaha Ila Allah, Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulilah, Subhanna Allah, La Hawla wa La quwata Ila bilah, the best of provision is that of taqwa, O Lord.
The man passed along the message from the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, so Hudayr replied:
"Praise be to Allah who has remembered from atop the seven skies, and on top of His throne, and has had mercy upon me in my time of hunger and weakness. O Allah, as you have rememembered Hudayr, allow Hudayr to never forget you!"
Once the man told the Prophet, salah allahu 'alayhi wa salam, about what Hudayr had said, the Propeht replied:
"Only if you had looked up you would have seen that his words lit up that which is between the sky and earth"

the author of hilyatul awliya?
I'm not sure, ukhti. In any case, the story is certainly mentioned in Sifat Al-Safwa by Ibn Al-Jawzi. I believe he's mentioned after the Sahabi Hamama.

Hisham bin AbdulMalik once performed hajj during his Khilafa. As he entered Ka'ba, he found Salim bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar, may Allah have mercy on both.
The Khalifah, Hisham, said: Tell me what you need.
Salim replied: I am shy to ask anyone but Allah knowing that I am in His house.
When Salim left the Ka'bah, the Khalifah followed him out, and said: Now you have left the house of Allah, so tell me what you need.
Salim replied again: From wordly affairs or the hereafter?
the Khalifah said: From wordly affairs.
Salim said: I have not asked about the world from He who posseses the world so do you expect me to ask it from someone who doesn't possess it.

It seems that your 'spider sense' prevails. After a brief research, I found that Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin says that there is no trace to the narration or 'La Asala Lahu' with regards to the incident with 'Umar and Hudhayfa. In fact t seems as though the Rafidha had something to do with it. Check out this link (http://akhawat.islamway.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php?t19945.html).
Barak Allahu feek, akhi, for your keeness and concern.

I mentioned his amazing story a while ago on my blog. Indeed, it is by far one of the most touching.
Heroism, My name is Anas
Heroism had many names during the life of the Prophet, salah allahu ‘alayhi wa salam, and one of them personified in Anas bin Al-Nadhir - may Allah be pleased with him. Remember his name dear friends, for witnessing Iman and acts of heroism is a supreme matter indeed, one we can be very proud of. This is a man who if he were to swear by Allah, Allah woud answer his prayer…
Anas was unaware that Prophet, salah allahu ‘alayhi wa salam, had left to badr, and when he did, he was deeply saddened that he wasn’t able to attend the war. He made a pledge between himself that he would die as a shaheed to make up for the great day that he had missed…
He approached the Prophet, salah allahu ‘alayhi wa salam, with severe regret for accidentally missing the battle of bader, and he said: “O Prophet of Allah, I was absent from the battle of bader, I was absent on the first battle when you fought the disbelievers, If Allah were to permit me to battle the mushrikeen, Allah will witness what I shall do to them”
When the battle of Uhud arrived, Anas left with the Muslimeen in hope of attaining shahadah.
The battle began and the Muslims were nearing victory until the archerers disobeyed the orders of the Prophet, salah allahu ‘alayhi wa salam, and the victory turned into a defeat. So, many of the Muslims began to flee in the sight of defeat and only a few of the Prophet’s companions stood firm in the battlefield in this difficult time. When Anas witness the scene, he remembered his oath to Allah, and his saying, “If Allah were to permit me to face the mushrikeen, Allah will witness what I shall do to them”
He then heroically dived in the mix of battle with the Mushrikeen saying, “O Allah, I seek pardon for the acts of those (referring to the believers) and I am innocent for the acts of those (referring to the disbelievers)” He then move forward and drew his sword and that moment he ran into Sa’ad bin Mu’adh and Anas said, “O Saa’d, I swear by my Lord that I smell the aroma of paradise near the mountain of Uhud” He then began to fight with sword, thrusting it left and right, until he fell as a shaheed on the floor of battle.
After the war, people went seekingn for those who died. It was said that Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, couldn’t be recognized from the amount of wounds he had endured. He had nearly 80 wounds made by arrows and sword stabs. It was only his sister who could finally recognize him by a mark she recognized on his finger.
It is said that the following verse was revelead about Anas and those alongside him who died for the sake of Allah
“Among the Believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah: of them some have completed their vow (to the extreme), and some (still) wait: but they have never changed (their determination) in the least” [Al-Ahzab:23]
And finally, may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon our beloved Prophet.
