The hit Turkish soap "Nour" which is being aired on MBC has sparked a rash of divorces in countries across the Middle East as women compare their real-life husbands to the TV heart throb, according to press reports.

The trouble centers around the lead male character called Muhannad – played by Turkish actor Kivanç Tatlitug – whose good looks and charms have left many Arab women weak at the knees.

Fed up with his wife's obsession with Muhannad and constant complaints that he should be as romantic as the TV hunk, a Saudi husband from Dammam divorced his wife and threw her out of the marital home, Saudi newspaper Al-Yawm reported.

A Jordanian daily said a husband divorced his wife after she uploaded Muhannad’s picture on her cell phone.

And a Syrian website reported that there were four divorces in Aleppo because of the steamy soap.

In one case, a husband divorced his wife after they had a heated argument about the actor while watching the series, which MBC has dubbed into Arabic to suit Middle Eastern audiences.

According to a neighbor, the wife reportedly told her husband: “I want to sleep with Muhannad for only one night and die afterwards.”

In another case, a husband divorced his wife after she hung a picture of Muhannad – the character Mehmet in the original Turkish version – on their bedroom wall.

Nour, which airs on MBC, the parent company of Al Arabiya, is about a woman who is married to Muhannad after he loses his true love in a tragic accident.

Muhannad is then forced to marry Nour by his family. The series traces the hardships Nour must go through to win her husband’s heart and to prove herself on a professional level.

Nour, called Gümüs in the original series, is played by Turkish actress Songül Öden.

Everyone in my family in jordan has banned their wives from watching it, because it causes so much fitna around the place. They all thought turkey was really poor from this programme. I had to explain its not real, just a show, and turkey is more advanced than jordan!!! They didnt believe me of course as the TV says something different.

I can understand why this man divorced his wife [if she did say what is reported]- but the others were a bit extreme in their actions.

If the marriages were based on mutual love, trust and understanding such incidents would have never happened. Unfortunately marriages in Muslim society today are most of the time based on western material values like money and physical beauty and this, I believe is the cause of such fitnah.

This is okay the Rasool that ppl marry for 5 reasons with a person:

his wealth
looks
Imaan

and the other 2 I forgot I think status or something.

Someone hangs up a poster of some guy in her husband's bedroom and she doesn't expect to be thrown out? Though the TV should've been first.

TV is such a poison, subhan Allah.

May Allah rid the Muslim homes of such filth and idiocy as these soap operas.

Prophet Mohammad said, "A spouse is sought in marriage for four reasons, namely beauty, family-lineage, wealth and character based on faith. The best criterion being such character."

Now I see why the husbands resorted to divorce.

It's not about looks for a woman at the end of the day , they are actors playing a part, and women want more romance in their life and they see this false life on TV and want one like it.

We read romantic novels and watch romantic films and think why cant the man sitting beside them be like that, even though its all false as they don't have to cook and clean, and raise a brood of children.
We have the example of Phrophet (saw) who was romantic, husbands should be too.

basically the leeds and liverpool fans had a reputation for being the toughest and most ruthless bunch of hooligans in the world. then they went to turkey to play european football, the turks ended up killing a few of their fans and gave the rest the beating of their lives, you dont mess with turks when it comes to football as they are a tough bunch, anyway, this inspired hatred for the turks on the part of footy fans from these areas and the chant "id rather be a paki than a turk" was coined

Saudi cleric slams Turkish soaps as "wicked"

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's top religious figure has slammed Turkish soap operas as "wicked" and "malevolent", despite the wild popularity of one show, a paper said on Sunday.

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al al-Shaikh told a seminar in conservative Saudi Arabia this week that Arabic television channels airing the soaps were un-Islamic.

"Any channel that helps to further perpetuate the popularity of these shows is ultimately a warrior against God and his Prophet," he said in comments cited by al-Watan newspaper.

"It is not permitted to watch Turkish series ... They are replete with wickedness, evil, moral collapse and war on virtues that only God knows the truth of."

He said he was speaking in the name of the Higher Council of Religious Scholars, the government body charged with advising on religious affairs.

It was not clear what specific objection the Mufti had to the programmes. Saudi clerics demand gender segregation in public places and women are not allowed to drive cars.

They have previously objected to young Saudis taking part in popular music talent shows along the lines of American Idol.

The show "Noor" this year became an overnight sensation in the Arab world when it was first aired on Saudi-owned satellite channel MBC. It it was a flop when first shown in Turkey in 2005 with the title Gumus.

It has since spurred a large number of Gulf Arab tourists to visit Turkey, including the Saudi first lady Princess Hissa Al-Shaalan. Its blonde and blue-eyed star Kivanc Tatlitu has become a heart-throb for many Arab women.

t.v is a great fitna along with the internet. whats happened to us muslims? well the haram has become halal to us. so many of us like watching these FILTHY soaps, we have now become desensitised to zina, drunken dehaviour, swearing, nudity etc etc it's really disgusting. Soon after my marriage i banned all soaps from my house, also banned satellite dish but could not ban the t.v because i live with my parents. If we want to be pious then we need to remove ourselves from these films etc. what sort of husbsnd allows his wife to watch such filth in the first place. t.v and internet has removed the curtain from our eyes and removed the barrier of shame!!
