Bali bombers face execution "soon as possible": Indonesia

JAKARTA (AFP) — Indonesia's attorney general said Monday he hopes three men sentenced to death for their role in the 2002 Bali bombings will be executed as soon as possible.

Attorney General Hendarman Supandji said he hoped it could be done before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in September, but said he had not set a date and was still waiting to receive the relevant documentation.

"We want it as soon as possible as all legal requirements have already been fulfilled for an execution," he told reporters.

"It could be the end of this month, this month or next month," he said.

Amrozi, Imam Samudra and Ali Ghufron were convicted in 2003 and are being held in an island prison off the south coast of Java.

Indonesia's Supreme Court gave the green light for the three men to be executed last week when it rejected a final appeal.

The men remain defiantly unrepentant over their lead roles as plotters of the 2002 attack which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists at bars and nightspots on Bali.

They have said they will not seek presidential clemencies and are looking forward to becoming martyrs.

Executions in Indonesia are by firing squad, usually carried out at night in isolated and undisclosed locations. The prisoner is notified at least 72 hours in advance.

Senior prosecutor Abdul Hakim Ritonga told AFP the three will be executed somewhere in Central Java province.

"According to the law, an execution must be implemented in a place where they commit a crime. But for an efficiency reason it would be carried out in central Java where they were being held," he said.
