`Umar ibn `Abdul `Azeez rahimahullaah used to say, "None can reach the station of taqwaa until he possesses neither action nor words that can be exposed to his embarrassment either in this world or the Hereafter." He was once asked, "When does the worshipper reach the peak of tawqa?" He replied, "If he put all his thoughts and desires in his heart on a plate and then wandered around in the market, he should not feel ashamed of anything there."

Abu Hurairah, radhiAllaahu `anhu was asked about taqwa. He said, "It is a road full of thorns. One who walks it needs to have extreme patience (http://forums.islamicawakening.com/showthread.php?t=13868)."

"By the sun and its brightness, by the moon as it follows it, by the day as it shows its brightness, by the night as it conceals it, by the heaven and its wondrous make, by the earth and all its expanse, and by the soul and He Who perfected it in proportion, then He showed it what is wrong for it and what is right for it - indeed he succeeds who purifies it, and he fails who corrupts it." [ Ash-Shams 91:1-10 ].

Once taqwa settles into the heart of a believer, life is not seen in the same light again. Life becomes more than the daily grind, the gradual process from life to death. One's life is seen with having a special goal: the pleasure of the Lord in eternal Paradise. A person with taqwa strives for goodness, which will lead him to happiness in this world and the Hereafter, Insha Allah. The Prophet SAW said that taqwa is the head of everything. This is because taqwa encourages good and refrains one from committing sin.

As salaam 'alaikum wa rahamatullah,
Jazaakillahu khairan for starting this thread. It's amazing how one word can be defined in so many ways, each way more eloquent than the previous, and yet at the end of the day come down to express one key theme: The fear of Allah and his punishment.
Ibn Abee Hatim narrates some profound statements pertaining to Taqwaa in his tafsir of (3:102). If someone has the time please do translate them insha Allah.
3958- 'Abdullah (ibn Mas'ood) said pertaining to the ayah (Have taqwaa of Allah, a taqwaa that he is most deserving.): "It is to obey (Allah) so that he is never disobeyed, it is to remember him so that he is never forgotten, and it is to thank him so that no ingratitude is ever shown to him."
Similar narrations have been related by: Murrah al-hamdaani, Rabee' bin Khuthaym, 'Amr bin Maymoon, Hassan Al-Basri, Tawoos, Qataadah, Ibrahim An-Nakh'ee, Abu Sinaan, and Al-Suddi.
