“My family and I are living in a nightmare… I never thought the day would come when I would regret my 40 years in this country.” (Ashfaq Ahmad, father of detainee Babar Ahmad)

DETENTION IN AFGHANISTAN AND GUANTANAMO
by Shafiq Rasul, Asif Iqbal and Rhuhel Ahmed (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2741)

“He had been forced to watch a video supposedly showing two detainees dressed in orange, one sodomising the other, and was told that this would happen to him if he didn’t co-operate.”

In this 115-page report released last Wednesday, former British Guantanamo detainees, Shafiq Rasul, Asif Iqbal and Rhuhel Ahmed detail the terrible ordeal they and other prisoners were forced to endure in US custody, first in Afghanistan and then in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This dossier includes a detailed discussion of the interrogations, exposes the extent of British complicity in the legal black hole of Guantanamo and sheds light on the state of many of their fellow inmates.

PRISONER VOICES:

Letter from Abdullah Ibn Thani Al-Unayzi, Ramadhan 2002 (http://www.cageprisoners.com/prisoners.php?lid=85)

My brother if you are enslaved then we will meet our loved ones,
And the gardens of my Lord have been prepared for us,

So glad tidings for us in the abodes of eternity.

Coded Letters From Briton in Guantanamo Reveal 'Regime of Violence' (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2799)
by Severin Carrell
Martin Mubanga, one of the remaining Britons in Guantanamo, is using a mixture of London street slang, Jamaican patois and rap lyrics in his letters home to describe the threats of sexual assault and physical violence in Camp Delta.

We Must Not Let This Man Rot In Guantanamo (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2789)
by Corin Redgrave
I know Azmat Begg quite well. I have stood with him on the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington as he read aloud his appeal to President Bush, while hailstones battered our umbrellas. He is the father we would all wish for if we were in trouble. I could not conceive how this Government, any government, presented with his simple request, which in common humanity cries out to be granted, would not strain every nerve to see it fulfilled. I was wrong.

Abu Ghraib, USA (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2823)
By Anne-Marie Cusac
Donald Rumsfeld said of the abuse when he visited Abu Ghraib on May 13, "It doesn't represent American values." But the images from Iraq looked all too American to me. Our soldiers abroad seem to have acted out behaviors that Americans condone, yet don't face up to, at home – some of the most sadistic practices employed in the U.S. prison system.

Muslim Fear Amid Terror Arrests (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2822)
by Dominic Casciani
Many Muslims are increasingly troubled by anti-terrorism operations. One public meeting in South London this weekend showed how for some that concern is turning to anger.

Why is Babar Ahmad Being Extradited To The USA and Not Being Charged In The UK? (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2824)
“…when people against whom there is not enough evidence to try them in a UK court, on offences that they are alleged to have committed whilst actually on UK soil, for which there are ample police powers and draconian UK laws to deal with, are being extradited to foreign countries on little or no evidence, some of which could be the result of allegations produced under torture, something is very wrong.”

Babar's Re-Arrest"Political", Says Family Member (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2797)
by the Muslim News
The re-arrest of a British Muslim following a US request for his extradition was politically motivated, according to one of his sisters.

Let Sunlight Shine On The Black Hole of Guantanamo (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2816)
The letters of Martin Mubanga, one of the four British detainees in Guantanamo Bay are written in a coded mixture of patois, cockney and rap speak. But they are crystal clear in their depiction of Guantanamo as a moral and legal black hole where, far from the protection of media lenses and international law, human rights are being daily traduced

The Sting and The Spin: Will A Small House in Willesden unlock The Secrets of al-Qa'ida? (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2800)
by Francis Elliott, David Randall and Andrew Johnson
Eleven men are being interrogated in Paddington Green police station. One of them may be al-Qa'ida's 'UK general'. Is this a genuine intelligence breakthrough or another murky chapter in the war on terror?

Farid Hilali In Court - Unanswered Questions (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2832)
Farid Hilali is the first person who is being extradited under the new European Arrest Warrant. This new extradition procedure should be under microscopic scrutiny by the media and others, since the reported "evidence" against Hilali seems to be vague and circumstantial, and some of it should be inadmissable under current laws.

Muslims Condemn Man's Detention (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2778)
by Hugh Muir
Moderate Muslim groups yesterday condemned the detention of a man in Britain on a US extradition warrant that alleges he used the internet to raise funds for the execution of acts of terrorism in Chechnya and Afghanistan.

How Fear Preys On Britain's Muslims (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2804)
by Tariq Panja
For the residents of Preston Old Road in Blackburn, Lancashire, Tuesday started as just another day. A shopkeeper described the area as 'boring, boring and boring'. However, by just after three in the afternoon it seemed as if this sleepy street had been changed into the set of a big-budget Hollywood action movie.

Abuse, British Complicity And The Scandal Of The Prisoners Held At Guantanamo (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2817)
One of the reasons the US authorities have given for continuing to confine so many prisoners at Guantanamo is the danger they say these 600 people could present to the Western world if they were free. It is becoming increasingly apparent, however, that there may be another reason why these individuals are being kept out of circulation: the harrowing accounts of their treatment they might produce if, and when, they were released.

Terror And Torture (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=2820)
The Guardian
Pentagon spin doctor Major Michael Shavers states that Guantanamo Bay is "a safe, humane and professional detention operation." Perhaps he can explain why British resident Jamil el-Banna has reportedly lost 70-80lbs in weight during his detention by the US military?

David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey spin the Supreme Court's three "war-on-terrorism cases" as a victory for the administration. Not so.
