Im new on here, ive been online for about a week or so, and all i have found is bickering, slandering, and extreme lack of manners - I was recommended this site by a friend, and i just cant see how people are benefitting, maybe im missing something, so i just wanted to know that apart from posts from Abu Sabaya and current affairs from Brother Mujhaid, is there anything else??
*and yes im expecting comments from members who are going to say, "if you dont like it, get lost* which is just typical.

I have learned the importance of having my kids attend a formal Islamic school. IA is proof that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Aafia Siddiqui is by far the most benefical thread, alhumdulilah.

You would not find someone saying that InshaAllaah . Thats not typical at all of these forums.
Bickering happens in any house none of us are perfect.
Please go to the learning zone , or the food for the soul section or type in what ever you wish and you will find something new InshaAllaah.

Well brother Haani, when you have people of so many different ideological schools of thought you are bound to have a lot of arguing. About the only way to stop that would be to ban anyone and everyone that is against the views of the moderators, which would then just promote groupthink, which is something none of us want.

but maybe a group think wouldnt be such a bad idea, i mean i see and assume that the mods can read and translate arabic for example, wouldnt it be more beneifical to focus your efforts towards that, rather than waste time by debating every day, and same topics coming up over and over like a vicious circle
just something iv noticed about brother abu sabaya, ive never seen him arguing - and by him concentrating on efforts to translte surely that is more benefical - just a note to other members 2.

Well, you have a good idea, but the only problem is that we do not control debates here, others do. Even if we wanted to control debates we wouldn't be able to because we have no-tolerance policy towards stifling any debate or dialogue.
This is why you see that we would perhaps intimidate the worse ppl here in order to get them to apologise, but we would never ban, unless the person comes up with too much vulgarity for us to handle.
It makes the atmosphere here very bad, but people do change over a period of time.
As I said elsewhere, it is an either/or matter for us. Either we opt for our flowery image and stifle debates and discussions, or we allow everyone to air his views, no matter how furious they make us, and lose our image. I would rather opt for the latter because I think this is the whole point of having a forum.

And there you have it folks. How to generalize and insult millions of people in one sentence.
Why bother piling up sins by insulting your brothers and sisters one by one? Just make a general statement in which you wrong thousands - even millions - of them at the same time!

So, you don't mind if someone publicly says "most of aboo ayaat al hindee's family seem to be fussaaq"?
Hey, good use of 'most' and 'seem' can make those two words 'seem' like they aren't even there.
You're right though, akhi. People do read what they want to see. So be careful because you might sometimes be responsible for what your words imply [though you haven't directly said it], wAllahu A'lam.

Akhee, the lack of manners and respect on this forum are things that every new member notices and complains about. You have to take one of three choices: leave, stay and become like everyone else, or stay and hold yourself with the proper Islamic etiquette and inshallah become a role model. I think you have the potential for number 3.
I've learnt a lot from this forum, mainly on issues of the beliefs of the Ash'aris and refutations of some extreme takfeeris, SPUBS etc. I like this forum as it is a relatively safe source of news from the Mujahideen, fataawa from shyookh and an expression point of different fiqhi opinions. I also like it for the fact that it puts one 'in touch' with proactive brothers like Abu Sabaya or knowledgeable brothers like Navaid Aziz, justabro and Abuz Zubair. I also like the fact that this forum attracts some modernists, defeatists, apologetics and neo-cons whose arguments are pumelled here and I'm then able to use these arguments against these people in 'real life'.
Finally, there are just some brothers here that one grows fond of. Forgot to mention the brothers section. Some 'interesting' topics discussed there and one can learn a lot from the life experiences of others.
Hope I helped akhee, and may Allah make your posts beneficial for us and vice versa. Ameen.

i have learned quite a lot from this forum!
i have firstly had a few of my questions answered, on fiqh and aqeedah. i was extremely close to going to a deobandi masjid and be a sufi but this forum helped me realize what the true aqeedah is! alhumdullillah, may allah(swt) reward all the brothers and sisters who helped me :)
now i agree with you, there is a lot of arguing on this forum, and sometimes it is done in a terrible manner.. an unislamic manner. i agree this is disheartening and not something good. but at the same time, it has helped me to accept that we should respect other viewpoints. also, i have learned that we are all still people, even if some people do hold views that i find scary. for example, some members were praising 9/11. if i had read this a year ago, i would have left this forum and make a huge havock about it. now days, i am still upset, but i understand that these people who believe this are not a bunch of wild animals. they are usually sincere people with sincere reasoning. so though i disagree with them on the issue, i won't scream tearfully going crazy.
also akhi, it is not very hard to skip over the arguing. every day when i view this forum i go to "new posts" and it shows all the recent posts. i click on the one's that interest me.. maybe a topic about fiqh or aqeedah, or a current event, etc. i read the educated posts that show proof. the bickering, i just skip over!
also, what i have learned, is that even if a member disagrees with you and uses negative language against you, this doesn't mean they hate you. there are a few members here who i have been rude to at times.. yet they have *all* forgiven me and do not hold it against me. some of these members have said good things about me, and i have said good things about them, even though there was a time when we were arguing. so, i find most people here to be forgiving and caring people in the long run.
this is what i have learned from this forum!

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,
Through forums like this you learn alot from "tell it like it is" quality discussions. Yes there are some unpleasant comments but if you look beyond that then there is alot that can be learnt if we admit first that there is alot to learn.
By talking about cases like Aafia's and sharing thoughts and experience, insha Allaah it will help us to deal appropriately with unjust treatment if it ever happens to anyone else. After all, we are human beings, we bleed and feel pain just like non muslims.
As the saying goes, "United we stand, divided we fall." (if anyone knows a hadeeth similar to this saying then please share it with us)
You can learn alot by just watching/reading peoples comments/debates.

I agree there. For new members, especially if they come from 'softer/calmer' forums, IA can be a bit O_O
When I first came on here I was drawn to a really long thread and I couldn't tell what the topic was anymore because the brothers (and it was just brothers) were hurling the most ingenious insults at each other; 'filthy fruitcake' remains my favourite.
Point being, this place was recommended because it has a lot of info to benefit from (mainly aqeedah issues and current affairs), and that's why I stayed. It helps when people are nice (which they are here), but even if they're not, as someone already said, take from the good and leave the rest.

once these forums were a blend of the hot useless discussions and alot of knowledge filled posts by az, um abdullah and abd_allah(sharif abu jafar).
now that characteristic of IA forums is almost reduced to the useless discussions only. manytimes its so irritating to lurk here on IA in the hope of a useful discussion.
