WHO IS AAFIA SIDDIQUI?

* Detained Incommunicado for five years
* Abused physically and psychologically
* 11 year old son in custody in Afghanistan
* Her two youngest children remain missing

Dr Aafia Siddiqui, the American educated Pakistani scientist and mother of three was detained for years by the US in Bagram. She has been the victim of the US programme of secret detention for five years since having been kidnapped in Karachi by Pakistan security services in 2003 along with her three children.

On Monday 4th August 2008, federal prosecutors in the US confirmed that Aafia Siddiqui was extradited to the US from Afghanistan where they allege she had been detained since mid-July 2008. The US administration claims that she was arrested by Afghani forces outside Ghazni governor’s compound with manuals on explosives and ‘dangerous substances in sealed jars’ on her person. They further allege that whilst in custody she shot at US officers and was injured in the process.

According to her lawyer, Elaine Whitfield Sharp, “We do know she was at Bagram for a long time. It was a long time. According to my client she was there for years and she was held in American custody; her treatment was horrendous.”

Aafia’s claim is contrary to the heavily contested position of the US administration that she was detained in July by Afghan forces while attempting to bomb the compound of the governor of Ghazni. The US has previously denied the presence of female detainees in Bagram and that Aafia was ever held there, bar for medical treatment in July 2008.

Aafia Siddiqui now faces trial in the US in circumstances that can only be described as strange at best. Questions remain as to her own whereabouts over the last five years and still that of her children; the US government have recently acknowledged that her eldest son Ahmed, an 11 year old US national, is in Afghan custody. The whereabouts of her youngest two children remain unknown.

Aafia's health has deteriorated since her transfer to the US on August 4th. She suffered multiple bullet wounds whilst in custody, the loss of part of her intestine, and extensive surgical incisions resulting in multiple layers of external and internal stitching prior to her extradition. There are a number of other healths concerns and subsequently her medical condition condition needs to be fully investigated by several different specialists. Physical injuries aside, Aafia’s psychological injuries obviously leave deeper scars. Her ordeal is heightened by the degrading and humilating strip and cavity searches she is forced to endure before every legal visit

Firstly Jazakallah khair for this akhi and may Allah make this deed of your heavy on your scale.

Second your pick of size, highlight and font almost gave me a headache! Maybe its the fasting.

Thirdly the above mentioned brother is the brother of hasan butt but alhumdolialh that is where the similarities stop. A lot of people who work hard in this field have nothing but good to say about his support for the prisoners and how much he cares.

I highly advise people to attend these charity iftar events. You can go to cageprisoners' website to see where and when the next one is happening insha'Allah.

Today brother Uthman Latif started the talk, masha'Allah he gave a very powerful speech, quoting ayat, ahadith and athar about the month of Ramadhan and du'a in it, the prisoners, about parallels between their situation and that of Yusuf (AS).

He was followed by Omer Butt who gave a talk on why we need to spend money trying to free our captives. I missed quite a portion of his talk because of my child however some of the things he mentioned was for example how some brothers get locked up w/o evidence, they get a solicitor from the government without getting to speak to them and that solicitor will "defend" them in a locked room with the judges, there was a name for this which I forgot now but basically he was saying that the only way to get the brother's out of that situation is through what is equivalent of "bail" and which costs a lot. Masha'Allah the brother has apparently helped freed over 60 muslim prisoners tabarakAllah.

Moazzam Begg spoke about sister Aafia and the truth regarding her case and how we've been deceived. Subhanallah, turns out she isn't a "scientist that's a threat" - she's a child psychologist! He talked about the voice of a muslim sister he would always hear in Bagram, sister Yvonne's efforts in trying to bring back Aafia's case to the surface (masha'Allah may Allah reward this sister!). He explained how it was all a lie that she "attempted to shoot an American soldier" because due to the way the Americans enter the cells and inspect Muslims it would have been impossible as they make them go in certain positions, hands in a certain way... There was an Ex-Guantanamo detainee there that was quite heavy built and Moazzam was using him as an example that even someone like him wasn't able to do that!

Two of the tipton three brothers attended, they didn't speak much because of the time so the bidding followed up which masha'Allah was really nice and fun. Things from ceramics with calligraphy, an art piece that is normally worth £35, an orange shirt with a barcode and a prisoner number signed by ex-guantamo detainees all sold for amazing prices.

Obviously there were the stalls of books, flyers, pens, mugs etc. masha'Allah may Allah swt reward them, they really worked hard today and I believe it was a success. The food was really good too!

Brothers and sisters, if you can attend such events and donate it would be great. But even greater would be to volunteer for them and get involved... I am sure its something worthwhile and very exciting to get involved in.

yes, subhanAllah this is one thing they all kept stressing on. Uthman Latif explained how this all comes under "al-walaa' wal-baraa'". everyone can support in one way or another, the main point they wanted us to reflect on was the hadith of wishing for your brother what you wish for yourself. tomorrow, if this was to happen to anyone of us, what would we want the muslim community to be doing for us and our families? they were giving real life examples to us as they all knew brothers that were detained and the sufferings of their families (like the case of a sister with five kids that needed uniforms for her kids, Allahul musta'an).

they said that even writing letters to the prisoners was support, if people didn't want their names published or whatever, then send it through cageprisoners.

omer butt was saying that he's been doing this for about four years now (although more independant, than with an organisation) and he's still around and hasn't been detained.``

The sad part is more is being done for Aafia Siddiqi in the UK than in the US. That might be understandable, but doesn't make it right.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, Most Gracious

Muslim Solidarity Iftaar at HMP Belmarsh

An event to remember Muslim prisoners in the UK and abroad

7 years after 9/11, the number of Muslims in Western prisons continues to soar. Many of these Muslims are not behind bars due their involvement in drug related crime, violence or hooliganism, but are instead prisoners of conscience- prisoners whose only crime has been to voice an opinion. They have either been found guilty by association or are languishing behind bars through laws that permit indefinite detention.

Other Muslim prisoners have either been subjected to torture and abuse in legal anomalies such as Camp X-Ray, or have disappeared altogether, only to resurface in Gulags of the modern world. All these prisoners have one thing in common- they have all been robbed of their human rights.

This Iftaar has been arranged to remember the plight of these prisoners and their families.

Guest Speakers:

Mozzam Begg
Yvonne Ridley
Uthman Lateef
And others
