I wrote this post on Revolution Muslim Forums (http://www.revolutionmuslim.com/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=930&view=findpost&p=3578) about Alwahy. Insha Allah it would be of some benefit.
First, I would like to say that it is not my intention to be too harsh to the brother. If fact, I pray Allah Ta'ala grants him abundant success in this life and the hereafter. Moreover, it would please me to see the brother's Web site more popular than competing non-Muslim Web sites. Owing to my love for belief and my hatred for disbelief.
I heard about Alwahy quite some time ago and I was presently surprised by the idea, back then it just seemed like a free email service. I was put off of trying their service because the Web site only supported Internet Explorer, which I hate to the point of being unjust and unfair in my criticism.
Now my wife had taken the steps to register for a new email account, with them. This morning as I was navigating their site and my wife asked, 'What's that?'. I reminded her of the site and she responded, 'Well, their email didn't work. So, it was pointless for me.'
That pretty much summed up Alwahy at the time and the reason I haven't used their service or mentioned them anywhere.
That was then and today is now. The site is much improved. It looks cleaner and no pesky 'This Web site only works with Internet Explorer' warning. They are still offering email, although, I do not know anyone who uses it or if people are still experiencing the same troubles as my wife did. I would like to think that they would have taken time to improve upon it, as it seems to be their flagship service.
If anyone is using their email service, I would love to hear what you think about it. The good, bad and the ugly.
Moving on. The site seems to have switched gears a bit. It seems to be more of a social networking site than just a straight email service site, which looked good for the most part. To be honest, I didn't spend much time looking at that part of the site, since this topic was about search engines.
The search engine is my biggest problem, with our brother's site. Here's why: It say's on the homepage, 'Alwahy Search, The Moral Engine', which may leave some to believe that it is safe for Muslim families and children to search without supervision or caution. Nothing could be further from the truth. A simple search using common key words could lead you to some of the most disgusting anti-Islamic Web sites on the Internet.
Why would a Muslim create a search engine and included anti-Islamic Web sites? The answer is of course, he didn't create the search engine. It is a script, which could be purchased for around $100. To prove that, I did a search for 'Web developer' and I received 1,810,000,000,00 results. I repeated the search on Google and I received 57,700,000. For fun I also did the search on Cuil and I received 5,237,752.
My problem here is not the site but making it seem as if it is safe or Islamic, when its not. May Allah forgive him and me and all the Muslims Ameen.
I would like to say that my wife and I love the logo.

Does the owner maintain the site ? or do you feel its become a mammoth task to take on ?
Are they based in UK or America ?

They are based in the UK as far as I know. Is it a large task? No. Because there is nothing he can do. He has almost no control over what results are returned in his search site.
Does the owner maintain the site ?
I dont know if the owner is the site maintainer or if he has employed someone else to do it.
