"One month is like a year here, and I have considered pleading guilty in order to get out of here."(Salim Ahmad Hamdan, Yemeni held in solitary confinement in Guantamamo)

MOAZZAM BEGG: ‘I WAS PHYSICALLY ABUSED, DEGRADINGLY STRIPPED BY FORCE, SUBJECT TO PERNICIOUS THREATS OF TORTURE, ACTUALY VINDICTIVE TORTURE AND DEATH THREATS’

Lawyers for the British Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg received the first uncensored letter from him in two-and-a-half years, written in July 2004, just six weeks before he was due to have his first meeting with a lawyer.

Moazzam Begg, 36, is being held hostage by the US government in Guantanamo Concentration Camp, without trial, where he has been held in solitary confinement 24 hours a day.

In this heartbreaking letter, he reveals the horrific reality and illegal nature of his detention. He speaks of death threats, torture, racial and religious abuse, confessions signed under duress. He discloses the real reason that the US perhaps have kept him hidden from the other detainees for 3 years – he has been a witness to the deaths of at least two other prisoners in US custody.

As his US counsel, Clive Stafford Smith, put it, “this letter is just the tip of the iceberg.”

PETITION: REFUGE FOR INNOCENT VICTIMS OF THE WAR ON TERROR
(http://www.cageprisoners.com/forums...p=2508#post2508)

A number of Algerian men were arrested in Scotland under the Terrorism Act 2000 in December 2002. Others were arrested in London and brought to Scotland for questioning. The arrests received intense coverage in the Scottish media. The resulting racist backlash against Muslims in Edinburgh led to the creation of Scotland Against Criminalising Communities. Charges against nine of the men were allowed to lie until December 2003, even though the men had been released on police bail in March. It was quite clear by then that there was no evidence against them. The men were all asylum-seekers and have now filed fresh asylum applications based on the danger to which they have been exposed by their arrest, by the attendant media coverage, and by the sharing of information between the British and Algerian security services. If the men are returned to Algeria they will face imprisonment or execution.

The men need the strongest possible show of support, to demonstrate that we uphold their right to a safe refuge, to show beyond all doubt that they are welcome in this country, and to show that we hold in contempt the disinformation and racism that surrounded their arrests.

STOP TORTURE: EVIDENCE GAINED BY TORTURE MUST BE INADMISSABLE (http://forums.cageprisoners.com/showthread.php?p=2506)

On August 11, 2004 the Court of Appeal in London ruled against ten men who were challenging their indefinite detention without charge or trial in Belmarsh and Woodhill prisons. The men's lawyers argued that the secret evidence against them may have been obtained by torture from detainees in US military camps at Guantanamo Bay or Bagram. The judges ruled that British courts could use evidence extracted under torture, as long as British agents were not complicit in the abuse.

Peace and Justice in East London demands that Her Majesty's Government and her Courts uphold the principle contained in the Geneva Convention, that all prisoners have to be treated humanely. If torture is unlawful and wrong, then any information extracted under torture must also be unlawful and wrong.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: FBI BEGINS PRE-ELECTION QUESTIONING OF MUSLIMS

The FBI and The Department of Homeland Security have announced another round of questioning of Muslims and Arabs as part of a pre-election initiative to thwart any possible terrorist attack. An article in Newsweek reported that the Bush administration will launch "a new pre-election antiterrorism campaign this week that will include the likely arrests of hundreds of aliens from Middle Eastern and other countries known to be havens for terrorists. Homeland Security has targeted for possible detention as many as 2,000 foreigners who are believed to be in violation of their visas and about whom there is soft intelligence suggesting possible terror connections." If you have been or could be approached, you need to know your rights.

‘These Letters Gave me Strength…’ (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=3405)
by Stop Political Terror
"I have received many letters from brothers, sisters and even children. I was very happy, you can’t imagine how these letters gave me strength, steadiness and support to carry on in this way.” These are the words of a prisoner imprisoned in Britain’s very own Guantanamo Bay – Belmarsh prison. Words that reflect happiness and gratitude. Words that show us how a simple letter can do so much. A Torture Killing By U.S. Forces in Afghanistan (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=3427)
by Craig Pye
The incident at Gardez - which appears to be one of the worst instances of torture and prisoner abuse carried out by U.S. forces in Afghanistan - has never before been publicly reported. This account is based on the unpublished report by Afghan military investigators, a separate memorandum by officials of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), several other official Afghan documents, and interviews with a number of people with direct knowledge of the story. Together, these provide evidence not only of appalling mistreatment of detainees but also of an attempt to put pressure on local Afghan officials to cover up what had taken place.

Stand Up For Justice and Speak Out On Behalf of the Oppressed (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=3446)
by Stop Political Terror
If you want to have a future in this country, then you are going to have to struggle for it. Because if we just keep quiet, then sooner or later, this growing Islamophobia will come to us in some shape or form. It will come to us and our families and our communities, maybe even years from now. But then it will be too late to realise that maybe we should have stood up and done something when we had a chance.

The Release of Yaser Hamdi: Legal Manipulation of “Enemy Combatant” Cases (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=3415)
by John Andrews
Hamdi’s release has been widely viewed by legal commentators as “damage control” by the Bush administration, which got as much mileage as it could from the case and wanted to avoid a potentially embarrassing courtroom showdown.

I Was Wrong About Steyn (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=3406)
by Marcel Berlins
No fewer than nine law lords will hear the lawyers for the Belmarsh detainees argue that their detention is unlawful. But the nine will not include Lord Steyn, a law lord generally considered to be one of the very best judges of our time. He's been bumped off the case at the government's request.
