while I was searching for something I came across this, an interesting story in seerah of Imam Abu Mansoor al-Khayyat. (from Thail Tabaqat al-Hanabila by Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali rahimahu Allah)
I thought to share it with my brothers and sisters in this forum.

محمد بن أحمد بن علي بن عبد الرزاق، الشيرازي الأصل، البغدادي، الصَّفَار، المقرىء، الزاهد، المعروف بأبي منصور الخياط.
وُلد سنة إحدى وأربعمائة، في شوال - أو ذي القعدة -

قال ابن الجوزي: كان أبو منصور من كبار الصالحين الزاهدين المتعبدين. كان له ورد بين العشاءين، يقرأ فيه سبعًا من القرآن قائمًا وقاعدًا، حتى طعن في السن.
وقال ابن ناصر عنه: كان شيخًا صالحًا، زاهدًا، صائمًا أكثر وقته، ذا كراماتِ ظهرتْ له بعد موته.

قرأتُ على أبى حفص عمر بن حسن المزي: أخبركم إسماعيل بن عبد الرحمن الفراء أنبأنا الإمام أبو محمد عبد اللّه بن أحمد المقدسي قال: قرأت على أبي عبد اللّه مظفر بن أبي نصر البواب، وابنه أبي محمد عبد الله بن مظفر ببغداد، قلت لهما: حدثكما الإمام الحافظ أبو الفضل محمد بن ناصر قال: كنتُ أسمع الفقهاء في النظامية يقولون: في القرآن معنى قائم بالذات، والحروف والأصوات عبارات ودلالات على الكلامٍ القديم القائم بالذات، فحصل في قلبي شيءٌ من ذلك حتى صرت أقول بقولهم موافقة. وكنتُ إذا صليتُ أدعو اللّه تعالى أن يوفقني لأَحَبِّ المذاهب والاعتقادات إليه، وبقيت على ذلك مدة طويلة أقول: اللهم وفقْني لأحب المذاهب إليك وأقربها عندك.
فلما كان في أول ليلة من رجب سنة أربع وتسعين وأربعمائة رأيت في المنام كأني قد جئت إلى مسجد الشيخ أبي منصور الخياط، والناس على الباب مجتمعون، وهم يقولون: إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عند الشيخ أبي منصور، فدخلتُ المسجد، وقصدت إلى الزاوية التي كان يجلس فيها الشيخ أبو منصور، فرأيتهُ قد خرج من زاويته، وجلس بين يدي شخص، فما رأيت شخصًا أحسن منه على نعت النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم الذي وُصِف لنا. وعليه ثيابٌ ما رأيت أشد بياضًا منها، وعلى رأسه عمامةٌ بيضاء. والشيخ أبو منصور مقبل عليه بوجهه، فدخلتُ فسلمتُ، فردَّ عليّ السلام، ولم أتحقق مَنِ الرادِّ عليَّ لدهشتي برؤية النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وجلستُ بين أيديهما فالتفت إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من غير أن أسأله عن شيء أو أستفتحه بكَلام أصلاً، وقال لي: عليك بمذهب هذا الشيخ. عليك بمذهب هذا الشيخ. عليك بمذهب هذا الشيخ.
قال الحافظ أبو الفضل: وأنا أُقسم بالله ثلاثًا، وأشهد بالله لقد قال لي ذلك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثلاثَا. ويشير في كل مرةٍ بيده اليمنى إلى الشيخ أبي منصور.
قال: فانتبهتُ وأعضائي ترعد، فناديتُ والدتي رابعة بنت الشيخ أبي حكيم الحبري، وحكيتُ لها ما رأيت، فقالت: يا بني، هذا منامُ وحي، فاعتمد عليه.
فلما أصبحت بكرت إلى الصلاة خلف الشيخ أبي منصور. فلما صلينا الصبح قصصتُ عليه المنام، فدمعت عيناه، وخشع قلبُه، وقال لي: يا بُني، مذهبُ الشافعي حسن، فتكون على مذهب الشافعي في الفروع، وعلى مذهب أحمد وأصحاب الحديث في الأصول، فقلت له: أي سيدي، ما أريد أكون لونين. وأنا أشهد اللّه وملائكته وأنبيائه، وأشهدُك على أني مُنذ اليوم لا أعتقد ولا أدين اللّه ولا أعتمدُ إلا على مذهب أحمد في الأصول والفروع. فقبَّل الشيخ أبو منصور رأسي، وقال: وفقك اللّه، فقبَّلتُ يدَه.-----------------------------------------------

Ibn al-Jawzi said: Abu Mansoor was from the pious\righteous, the zuhhad (ascetics) worshipers. He
had a wird (something one keeps on doing regularly) between the two Ishas, he reads in it seven from the Quran (not sure what that means) standing and sitting, until he became old.
and Ibn an-Nasr said about him: He was a pious shaikh, ascetic (zahid), fasting most of his time, he had karamat that appeared after his death.

I read (not sure who read - maybe Ibn Rajab? its not clear to me) to Abi Hafs Umar bin Hasan al-Mizzi: Ismail bin Abdur-Rahman al-Farra' narrated to you, that Imam Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Ahmad al-Maqdisi informed us, saying: I read to Abi Abdillah Mudaffar bin Abi Nasr al-Bawwab, and his son Abi Muhammad Abdullah bin Mudhaffar in Baghdad, I said to them both: The Imam al-Hafidh Abu al-Fadl Muhammad bin Nasir said:
"I used to hear the fuqaha in an-Nidhamiyyah (it was an Ash'ari school, correct me if I am wrong) say: in the Quran is a meaning existing\present in the essence, and the letters (huroof) and sounds (aswat) are signs of the qadim speech that is present\exists in the essence (bi-dhat). then there was something in my heart from that (saying or belief), so I started to say what they said in agreement.
and if I prayed I would make duaa to Allah Ta'la to guide me to the most beloved madhhab and beliefs to Him, and I kept doing that for a long time, I would say: "Oh Allah guide me to the most beloved madhhab to you..
Then when it was the first night in Rajab year 494 A.H. I saw in a dream that I came to the masjid of Shaikh Abu Mansoor al-Khayyat, and the people were gathered at the door, and they were saying: the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is with the Shaikh Abu Mansoor, so I entered the Masjid, and went to the corner where the shaikh Abu Mansoor sits in, so I saw that he has left his zawiyyah, and had sat in front of a person, I have not seen a person more fine than him in the description of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that was described to us. and he had clothes which I have never seen whiter than it, and on his head was a white turban .. so I entered and said salam , so he returned salam, and I was not sure who returned salam becasue of my bewilderment for seeing the PRophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and I sat in front of them, so I turned to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam without asking him about anything or starting with any talk, and he (the Prophet) told me: take\be upon the madhhab of this shaikh , be upon the madhhab of this shaikh, be upon the
madhhab of this shaikh.
al-Hafidh abu al-Fadel said: and I swear by Allah three times, and I bear witness by Allah that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam told me that 3 times. and he pointed in everytime with his right hand at shaikh Abu Mansoor.
he said: I became aware (woke up from dream) and my limbs were shaking, so I called my mother, Rabi'ah bin as-Shaikh Abi Hakeem al-Harbi, and told her what I saw, so she said: My son, this is wahy dream, so depend on it.
so in the morning I went early to Salat behind the shaikh Abu Mansoor. when we finished praying, I told him the dream, so his eyes teared, and his heart became khashe', and he told me: My son, madhhab Shafi'i is fine, be on madhhab Shafi'i in Furu' (fiqh), and upon madhhab Ahmad and ashab al-Hadith in Usool (aqeedah), so I said to him: my sayidi, I don't want to be of 2 types/kinds, and I bear witness to Allah, His Angels and His Prophets (alayhem assalam) and I testify to you that from today, I dont' believe .. and don't depend except upon the madhhab of Imam Ahmad in Usool and furu' (fiqh). so the Shaikh Abu Mansoor kissed my head...
