I read this tonight and i thought i would share it with all of you.

Abdullah bin Mahmud bin al-Faraj narrated:

"I heard 'Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hambal say: "My father went out to Tarsus(now syria?) and guarded the frontlines and fought there. My father said: "I saw knowledge dying there."

(Siyar A'lam an-Nubala 9/517)

when Imam Ahmad says "i saw knowledge dying there", he means that many of the other scholars that were fighting with him became Shuhadah.

I dont even think that there is a need to reply to this thread, just take a second and contemplate about the greatness of this man and those who were in his time, and just the braveness of those who carried knowledge.

May Allah Show mercy on his mother

One of the major differences i noticed between the scholars of back then and scholars of today is that most scholars back then were Mujahids and today most of these scholars are those who sit behind with the women and children and dont even incite the believers. No wonder we are in such a horrible state.

I was thinking the same thing. I mean, what scholar nowadays can compare to the likes of Ibn Taymiyyah and Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab (rahimahumullah)? I also think there's much in the fact that those scholars who were considered the mujadid of their century, were also active in Jihad.

Jazakallaahu Khair akhi abu faris

these great people defined what scholars are...

unlike some "scholars for dollars"...

far cry from scholars being the inheritors of prophets no?
