Maintaining ties of kinship

salam, There are many places in which maintaining the ties of kinship has been mentioned and i understand its importance therefore my question is to clarify some issues in order to fulfill this obligation inshallah. My question is, what does maintaining ties of kinship actually mean and what is the minimum in order for it to be considered as maintaining ties. The reason i ask this question is that fact that alhumdulilah i have a very big family in this country and "may allah forgive me" but i can think of nothing worse then spending time with certain members of my extended family, many of them are not practicing muslims and even worse they do nothing but spread lies and find enjoyment in my failure. This is the reason i need to know my minimum obligation towards these types of family members in order to fulfil my obligation towards my lord.
