As-Salaamu 'Alaikum brothers and sisters,
We have posted 10 questions to test our knowledge and understanding of the chapter we have just finished (Types of Water). Please give them all a try and don't worry if you get anything wrong, otherwise, you will never learn, nor would I ever know how fruitful these lessons are.
Hence, you are all obliged to answer the questions!
As for the Fuqaha (jurists) amongst us, we have placed three challenging questions for you. So let's see how many of us possess the mind of a Faqih!
Please also give your reasoning (or guesses) when answering questions… Yes or No replies are NOT accepted!
Test your understanding:
1) May one perform Ablution using sea water?
2) An insignificant amount of filth falls into a bottle of Tahur water, such that it does not alter it's taste, colour nor smell. Can one may make Ablution from it?
3) When you are in Lake District, you go to relieve yourself away from the public. You then realise that you do not have any water to clean yourself with, nor stones or leaves or tissues. But you do have a bottle of Irun Bru! Can you use it to clean yourself?
4) One has two bottles, one contains Tahir water and the other contains water which he is not sure about whether it is Najis or Tahir, what should he do for ablution?
5) Safiyah, a baby girl, urinates on your garment, and you place it aside to wash it when you get time. A week goes by, and you cannot remember whether or not you washed the garment, what do you do?
6) A sister has a nose bleed which freaks her out. Is it a must for her to wash the blood?
7) While a brother is on his way to the mosque, some birds' dropping lands on his shoulder. By the time he enters the mosque, he forgets about it and starts to pray while the dropping is still on him, and then remembers while in his prayer. What should he do?
8) A brother is feeding his baby boy some cereal and the baby suddenly urinates on his garment. How must he clean his garment?
9) A brother playing football in his local park, accidentally lands on dog excrement. How must he clean himself?
10) Replace 'dog' with 'cat' in question 9.
Challenging Questions for the Fuqaha of our forums!
1) A brother mixes a bag of sand in water, altering the three properties of water (i.e. its smell, taste, colour). Can one make Wudu with it?
2) If water is more than Qullatain, and is contaminated by Najis resulting in one of the three properties being altered, but thereafter it somehow manages to reverse its properties back to what they were originally, i.e. it becomes Tahir again. However, such is not the case with water which is less then Qullatain, for even if it reverses back to its original properties, it still remains Najis - why?
3) A dog licks the inside of a huge water container (more than Qullatain). You then pour lots of water in it, until it fills up. What is the ruling on the water and the container?

Assalamualikum, the following are my attempted answers to the questions. Masha Allah I found it a fun way to learn. So keep it up.
1) Yes, because water has been created tahoor (ref surat al-Anfal).
Unless if najasah falls into it & changes it’s taste, colour or smell, in which case one cannot perform ablution with it because it has become najis.
2) No, it cannot be used for ablution because the bottle of water is less than approx. 216 litres and it is stagnant, therefore if najasah falls into the water, it becomes najis regardless.
If the water in the bottle is more than approx. 216 litres then it would be ok to use for ablution.
3) No you cannot. Because Irun Bru may be Tahir but it is NOT Tahoor. And any kind of purification must be done with water which is Tahoor.
4) Even if he was sure that the other bottle contains water which is also Tahir, he cannot perform ablution with any of them because they are not Tahoor.
So if he does not have any Tahoor water, then he should perform Tayammum.
5) You should wash the garment. Because you are certain the she had urinated on it. But you are not certain about whether you washed it or not after the urination. So you take the certain and leave the doubt and you wash the garment.
6) If the blood freaked her out, then this indicates that the blood was a large amount, in which case she should wash it.
7) He should carry on praying. Because bird is halal for us to eat, therefore it’s dropping is Tahir and does not have to be washed.
8 ) Seeing as the brother is feeding the baby cereal, this shows us that the baby is eating solids, in which case the brother’s garment has to be washed.
9) Well the filth of a dog is to be washed 7 times, 1 of them with sand.
So I would say that the brother has to wash his garment 7 times, 1 of them with sand i.e. soap/washing powder.
10) According to the madh’hab he should wash it 7 times, 1 of them with soap.
Otherwise he should wash it 3 times until cleanliness is achieved.
Or according to Ibn Taymiyyah, he should just wash it until it is clean without any specific number in washing.
Challenging Questions for the Fuqaha of our forums!
1) No, one cannot make wudu with it. Because it is not termed water anymore, the purifying quality has been removed due to the mixture.
2) Because water that is less then Qullatayn becomes Najis if a Najasah falls into it regardless of whether 1 of the 3 properties have changed.
This is according to the hadith of the Prophet (may Allah’s peace & blessings be upon him), "If water becomes Qullatain, it is not contaminated by filth" So if water does not become Qullatayn then it IS contaminated by filth.
3) I would say that the container is Najis because it has not been washed 7 times, 1 of them with sand/soap (as in accordance with the hadith of the Prophet that the lick of a dog must be washed 7 times, 1 of them with sand).
But as for the water, then it is more than Qullatayn, so if any of it’s properties have not changed then I would say that it is still Tahoor.
And Allah knows best.

As Salaamualaikum,
I pretty much agree with bro. Abu Zakariyyah's answers and reasoning except for the following:
3) Not sure about this one , because I remember being taught that one may clean themselves after toilet through water, or dry material (like pebbles, toilet paper) or both....therefore if pebbles are fine to clean themselves with on their own , even though they are not Tahoor (but Tahir) can the same apply even to Irun Bru (which is Tahir)??? If not, why not? Or am I mistaken?
Also No.2 of the more challenging Questions..whats going on there???

AssalaamoAlaikum
This is my attempt at the questions wwithout looking at the answers of other participants.
1) May one perform Ablution using sea water?
Yes, as it is more than qullatain and it is running water. If it has been contaminated with something which has changed its colour, taste or smell then you can't make ablution with it. However this would be difficult to do as the contaminator must be of huge quantity to be able to contaminate and change these three properties of the whole of the sea.
2) An insignificant amount of filth falls into a bottle of Tahur water, such that it does not alter it's taste, colour nor smell. Can one may make Ablution from it?
If the water amounts to qullatain then you can make ablution with it but if it is less than qullatain then you can't use it to make ablution.
3) When you are in Lake District, you go to relieve yourself away from the public. You then realise that you do not have any water to clean yourself with, nor stones or leaves or tissues. But you do have a bottle of Irun Bru! Can you use it to clean yourself?
No, as the purifying quality departs if its mixed with soemthing that changes its name from water which is the case here. Therefore the iron bru is Tahir only but not Tuhur/pure but not purifying.
4) One has two bottles, one contains Tahir water and the other contains water which he is not sure about whether it is Najis or Tahir, what should he do for ablution?
He should leave them both and make tayyamum.
5) Safiyah, a baby girl, urinates on your garment, and you place it aside to wash it when you get time. A week goes by, and you cannot remember whether or not you washed the garment, what do you do?
It should be washed again as "certainty is not removed by doubt" it is certain that the garment had urine on it therefore the doubt is whether it has been washed or not so by removing this doubt we would need to wash the garment again.
6) A sister has a nose bleed which freaks her out. Is it a must for her to wash the blood?
The sister has been shocked due to this blood therefore it needs to be washed. If she wasn't shcoked then it wouldn't have needed to be....also the opinion of Ibn Abbas.
7) While a brother is on his way to the mosque, some birds' dropping lands on his shoulder. By the time he enters the mosque, he forgets about it and starts to pray while the dropping is still on him, and then remembers while in his prayer. What should he do?
He should go and wash off the filth at least three times until cleanliness is achieved and pray again.
8 )A brother is feeding his baby boy some cereal and the baby suddenly urinates on his garment. How must he clean his garment?
The baby boy is now on solids so he can't just moisten the urine(Nadh) but it must be washed at least three times until cleanliness is achieved.
9) A brother playing football in his local park, accidentally lands on dog excrement. How must he clean himself?
He must wash off the excrement seven times, one of the times being with sand or in mdoern times we would replace this with soap and detergent. WallahuAlam.
10) Replace 'dog' with 'cat' in question 9.
He must wash off the excrement at least three imes until cleanliness is acheived.
Challenging Questions for the Fuqaha of our forums!
1) A brother mixes a bag of sand in water, altering the three properties of water (i.e. its smell, taste, colour). Can one make Wudu with it?
If the water is the quantity of qullatain or is running water then it is contaminated as the properties have been changed thus it becomes najis and wudu can't be made.
If the water is standing and is less than qullatain then wudu still can't be made with it as the purifying quality of the water has departed due to the mixture of sand with it which has changed its name from water therefore it is pure but not purifying.
Because the Prophet salalahu alayhi wasalam said "Id water becomes qullatain, it is not contaminated by filth." This must mean that less than qullatain must get contaminated by filth however much you try to change it back.
3) A dog licks the inside of a huge water container (more than Qullatain). You then pour lots of water in it, until it fills up. What is the ruling on the water and the container?
The contaminater must be washed seven times. However the water inside has only become contaminated/najis if the saliva has caused it to change its colour, taste or smell. If it hasn't done this then the water is still Tuhur/purifying&pure and can still be used.
jazakhAllaah khayr for your efforts. inshaAllaah ull continue with the course...I'm finding it very beneficial so far.

Assalaamu alaikum,
Test your understanding:
1) May one perform Ablution using sea water?
I know that seawater can be used for purifying, but this I know from a hadith which says 'its water is pure and its dead lawful' (in referring to the water of the sea)
Where does the issue wrt its taste being changed fit in? Sea water is very salty (i.e. its taste has been changed) but is it because salt is a pure substance, and not a contaminant, that it does not affect the fact that it is still considered purifying?
2) An insignificant amount of filth falls into a bottle of Tahur water, such that it does not alter it's taste, colour nor smell. Can one may make Ablution from it?
No. If it is only a bottle, then the volume is less than 216 litres. This means that any amount of filth will contaminate it.
3) When you are in Lake District, you go to relieve yourself away from the public. You then realise that you do not have any water to clean yourself with, nor stones or leaves or tissues. But you do have a bottle of Irun Bru! Can you use it to clean yourself?
You can use it to clean yourself, but you will not necessarily be ritually purified!
Iron Bru is pure, but not purifying.
4) One has two bottles, one contains Tahir water and the other contains water which he is not sure about whether it is Najis or Tahir, what should he do for ablution?
He should perform tayyammum. As there is a chance that by using one of the bottles, he will become impure.
5) Safiyah, a baby girl, urinates on your garment, and you place it aside to wash it when you get time. A week goes by, and you cannot remember whether or not you washed the garment, what do you do?
You have to wash it, because you are certain that it is impure, and that is what you act upon.
6) A sister has a nose bleed which freaks her out. Is it a must for her to wash the blood?
Yes she should, as it has affected her.
7) While a brother is on his way to the mosque, some birds' dropping lands on his shoulder. By the time he enters the mosque, he forgets about it and starts to pray while the dropping is still on him, and then remembers while in his prayer. What should he do?
The droppings are impure, and so he has to remove the impurity (he should leave, and repeat the prayer).
8)A brother is feeding his baby boy some cereal and the baby suddenly urinates on his garment. How must he clean his garment?
The baby boy is eating solids, so his garment needs to be washed.
9) A brother playing football in his local park, accidentally lands on dog excrement. How must he clean himself?
The filth of a dog has to be washed seven times, one if them with sand. The brother should wash his garment with water seven times, and once with sand (modern equivalent detergent etc.)
10) Replace 'dog' with 'cat' in question 9.
ok, am a bit unsure now as to what is meant by 'filth'...
I thought that all excrement was the same, and that the specification of seven washings only refers to dog saliva.
Challenging Questions for the Fuqaha of our forums!
1) A brother mixes a bag of sand in water, altering the three properties of water (i.e. its smell, taste, colour). Can one make Wudu with it?
Want to have a go at these anyway!
If all three properties have changed, you cant call it water anymore - so it may be pure, but it is not purifying.
(but if the sand has sunk to the bottom and is separate from the rest, would that make a difference?)
2) If water is more than Qullatain, and is contaminated by Najis resulting in one of the three properties being altered, but thereafter it somehow manages to reverse its properties back to what they were originally, i.e. it becomes Tahir again. However, such is not the case with water which is less then Qullatain, for even if it reverses back to its original properties, it still remains Najis - why?
dont know.
3) A dog licks the inside of a huge water container (more than Qullatain). You then pour lots of water in it, until it fills up. What is the ruling on the water and the container?
The issue wrt dog saliva contamination is that it has to be washed 7 times. So any garment/container that hasnt been washed 7 times, as in the above case, is impure.
wrt the water, it is more than Qullatain, so it is pure. (I think!)
& Allaah knows best.

just to mention something I wrote in my post - think I went off on a tangent wrt the iron bru question - I started thinking about the bro using iron bru for wudhu, not simply for cleaning himself.

1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) I don't know what that is.
4) Either one.
5) Pray once in each pair of clothes.
6) No.
7) Keep praying.
8)Sprinkle water on top. Unless the baby has begun to eat whole food, at which point you have to wash it.
9) He has to wash the garment three times, ringing it out after each time.
10) It is like the bird excrement, so he can clean it but it's not considered najis the way the dog excrement is.

I thought I would give it a try. Please correct me inshallaah. I'm not have as knowledgable as the rest of you.

The following are the answers to the questions...
1) May one perform Ablution using sea water?Yes, because water has been created as Tahur. Hence, so long as the water retains its original state, be it sea water which is by its nature salty, or spring water which is by its nature sweet; it remains Tahur.
2) An insignificant amount of filth falls into a bottle of Tahur water, such that it does not alter it's taste, colour nor smell. Can one may make Ablution from it?
The word 'bottle' definitely refers to water less than Qullatain, for a container that holds water more than Qullatain is called a 'water tank' and not a 'water bottle'. Therefore, since the water is less than Qullatain, it becomes Najis by merely being in contact with Najaasah, regardless of whether its taste, colour or smell is altered or not.
3) When you are in Lake District, you go to relieve yourself away from the public. You then realise that you do not have any water to clean yourself with, nor stones or leaves or tissues. But you do have a bottle of Irun Bru! Can you use it to clean yourself?
According to the Madhab, one must use Tahur water only to clean the Najaasah of himself. Therefore, one may not use Irun Bru. He should rather try his best to find some solid object to wipe off the Najasah, or go to the river and obtain some water to clean himself.
4) One has two bottles, one contains Tahir water and the other contains water which he is not sure about whether it is Najis or Tahir, what should he do for ablution?
He cannot use either of them for ablution, even if he was sure that the second bottle contains Tahir water, since he may only use Tahur water to lift from himself Hadath (or ritual impurity). Therefore, in this case he may suffice himself with Tayammum.
5) Safiyah, a baby girl, urinates on your garment, and you place it aside to wash it when you get time. A week goes by, and you cannot remember whether or not you washed the garment, what do you do?
If you know for certain that Safiyah urinated on the garment, and are in doubt whether or not you washed the garment, then you act on that which you are certain. Hence, you must wash the garment.
6) A sister has a nose bleed which freaks her out. Is it a must for her to wash the blood?
If the sister is 'freaked out' by seeing the blood, it must be washed and cannot be overlooked, irrespective of the amount of blood issued.
7) While a brother is on his way to the mosque, some birds' dropping lands on his shoulder. By the time he enters the mosque, he forgets about it and starts to pray while the dropping is still on him, and then remembers while in his prayer. What should he do?
According to the Madhab, all animals that are permissible for us to consume, their urine, dung and semen are Tahir, bird being one of them. Therefore, the brother does not need to wash the birds' dropping, and he may resume with his prayer as normal.
8) A brother is feeding his baby boy some cereal and the baby suddenly urinates on his garment. How must he clean his garment?
He must wash the parts of garment affected by the urine, because the baby is eating solids, and the allowance to moisten one's garment is only applicable to the urine of a baby boy who doesn't yet eat solids.
9) A brother playing football in his local park, accidentally lands on dog excrement. How must he clean himself?
He must clean the affected area of his garment 7 times, once (and preferably the first wash) using sand, soap or detergent.
10) Replace 'dog' with 'cat' in question 9.
According to the Madhab, he must wash the affected area of his garment seven times. However, according to Ibn Qudaamah in his 'Umdah, he should wash it three times, and in his al-Mughni, which is also the chosen opinion of Ibn Taymiyah, there is no specific number, rather he should wash it until the Najaasah is washed away.
Challenging Questions for the Fuqaha of our forums!
1) A brother mixes a bag of sand in water, altering the three properties of water (i.e. its smell, taste, colour). Can one make Wudu with it?
Ibn Qudaamah said that if any Tahir object is cooked or mixed with Tahur water, such that the water isn't termed 'water' anymore, the 'water' is rendered unsuitable for making ablution with. However, sand is a Tahur object, and therefore, when mixed with water, the whole mixture of water and sand is considered Tahur and suitable for making Wudu with, even if the three qualities of water are altered. Because a mixture of Tahur and Tahur remains Tahur, unlike a mixture of Tahir and Tahur, where Tahir dominates the properties of Tahur.
Because, water which is more than Qullatain only becomes Najis by altering one of its three properties. Therefore, if the altered property is changed back to its original state, the water becomes Tahir again.
Unlike water which is less than Qullatain, for it becomes Najis by merely coming into contact with Najaasah, irrespective of whether its properties are altered or not, which is why it's purifying quality, or Najaasah cannot be reversed.
This also shows us the permissibility of recycling dirty and used water the way it is done in our age, and then using it for ablution etc! (Did someone say Islamic Shari'ah is defunct?!)
3) A dog licks the inside of a huge water container (more than Qullatain). You then pour lots of water in it, until it fills up. What is the ruling on the water and the container?
When the dog licks the container, it becomes Najis and requires to be washed seven times, one of the washes with sand/soap.
When water more than Qullatain is poured into it, it does not become Najis merely by coming in contact with dog filth. Rather, it must change one of its three properties to be considered Najis. Neither does this water purify the container, because the container needs seven washes.
This means, that the container remains Najis, while the water remains Tahir.

Assalam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah
I know this is from a long, long time ago....but I found this interesting. Here are my answers
1.) Yes, you can make abulation with the ocean water because it is much more than 216 liters (Qullatain) and it is running water (I think). Also, even if some najaasah were to fall into it, as long as the smell, color, or taste is not changed, it is still tahoor.
2.) No, one may not because it is a bottle of water, which means it is less than 216 liters.
3.) I have no idea what Irun Bru is? It seems as if it’s a beverage. If it is no longer classified as water, then no, you cannot clean yourself with it.
4.) Perform tayammum, because either way neither of the bottles contain tahoor water
5.) Act upon that which you are certain of.
6.) Yes, she should remove the naajis off of her
7.) Repeat his prayer after removing the filth
8.) Cereal is solid, so wash it with water
9.) Wash 7 times, 1 of those times being with the ground
10.) Wash off the excrement (not sure)
1.) Yes, because sand is pure and we make tayammum with it
2.) Dunno (not sure).
3.) The container would be impure until washed seven times & once with sand. However, the water, since it is more than qullatain, is not naajis because none of the 3 properties were changed.
_________________________
I know the actual answers have been posted, and I have a few questions:
1.) Can taahir water become tahoor?
2.) If the sister didn't freak out, would she not have been obliged to wash the blood off?
