Asalaam alaikum wa rahmatullah.

The course is to run over two and a half months in the summer between July and September 2007, and to be an intensive course on arabic grammar. The class will be taught by Ola Shoubaki, who is originally a palestinian sister but who was born and brought in the uk for most of her life.

She completed her BA in Arabic from SOAS in 2002 with a first class honours, at the moment she is very near the completion of her MA in arabic linguistics from the Islamic University of Malaysia. This masters has served to increase the depth of her understanding into workings of the language and it branches. She has also translated a number of arabic books into english working for a variety of publishers including JIMAS. She has been teaching arabic for the last eight years.

Throughout this time she has been commended for possessing a keen insight into the subtleties of the language and pervasive ability to represent complex grammatical themes in a manner very accessible to the english speakers. Often one finds that it is not the concepts which are beyond the grasp of the english speaker but the limitation of teachers who were not primarily educated in the english language to convey the subject in an accessible manner.

We feel that learning arabic occurs in stages and the first stage is related to gaining an understanding of the grammatical structures which are used to accomplish the needs of communication. All languages accomplish the needs of communication but in a variety of ways. Once one is familiar with these this paves the way for a self or assisted approach to gaining mastery of the language. Which involves the pain staking task of learning about 3-5 thousand words and a number of commonly uased phrases.

Ola's burning desire is to see a world in which the ummah returns back to the language of the Qur'an, the language of the sunnah, the language of the speech of Allah swt. To this aim she has set up a blog which you are all invited to paticipate in the address is http://arabicgems.wordpress.com/. To this end she has also invested her academic achievements as well as many hours of analytical thought time, considering how to teach arabic to non arabic speakers.

The course that she aims to teach will be a unique course, perhaps not to be repeated for a long time, if her ambitions for reserch into teaching the language are brough to fruition. It will aim to give its students a complete grasp of the basics of arabic grammar in a very short period of time. Another unique aspect of the course for those that are interested will be a memory course to facilitate the task of learning vocabulary.

At this stage we are interested in knowing how many sisters would be interested, and in which area they are predominantly located.

There are two options we are considering to offer.
The first is a four day a week course running throughout the whole day (10am -6pm) for about eight to ten weeks. This course will cost £300.

The second is a one day a week session, daytime or evening, for three hours for again 8 to 10 weeks. This course will cost £250.

The course material will be an amalgamation of various text books but most of the grammatical topics will be covered. There will be homework which will be given and regular testing both oral and written to measure progress of the students.

If anyone is interested and thinks that they will be able to spare the time and the resources to attend the course, then we would like to hear from you. If there are any further details that are required then please contact us on thanweerf@hotmail.com.

An email I recieved..

Assalaamu alaikum warahmatulah

This is to all of the Southall sisters and anyone in the surrounding areas who may be interested. The organisers are considering Southall Community Centre as a venue for the course (in a classroom), either every Saturday or Sunday, for about 3 hours.
The course fee would be £250. And will be spread over approximately 8-12 weeks. If this would be suitable for you then please email thanweerf@hotmail.com and express this. They need at least 20 sisters to run the class, so if you are interested and would definitely desire to seize this golden opportunity then get all the sisters together and inshaAllah you can have the class running. Again please pass this around to everyone on your mailing lists. This really is something you cant miss.

Wasalaamu alaikum warahmatulah

P.S. If anyone was interested in the four day course, of approx 6 hours a day i think they are in the process of setting this up from mon-thurs in North Harrow. If you want to go for that course, again please indicate this to the brother at the email address i quoted above. JazaakAllah khaire.
