Dear Brother/Sister
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah
As the Home Affairs Select Committee pointed out in its report yesterday, good community relations are being damaged by anti-terror laws that stigmatise and demonise the Muslim community. A number of organisations have come together to plan the largest Muslim Anti Terror Civil Rights March on a non-partisan, Muslim unity platform on 30 April 2005. With the election looming, it is essential that the Muslim community send a clear message against the 'climate of fear' that has been created by the draconian laws and disproportionate arrests targeted at a community which has made a significant contribution to this society.
The planning meeting will take place between 6 - 9pm at Almuntada Islami, Parsons Green, Fulham on Sunday 10 April 2005. Please ensure your prompt arrival. The organisations that have already confirmed their support and involvement in the march are Muslim Directory, University of London ISOC, Islamic Human Rights Commission, Stop Political Terror, Cage Prisoners, Prisoners of the West, Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Save Chechnya Campaign and the individuals include Martin Mubanga, Sheikh Haitham Haddad, Usama Hasan (Masjid Tawhid Leyton) and Iman Shakeel Baig (Kent and Lewisham Islamic Centre).
We feel that many Muslims will be in general agreement with the need for a united platform against the politics of fear. Accordingly, we feel that Muslims who participate in the march have to avoid any divisive actions and statements. As a result of initial soundings, it has been agreed that the march will not be used to discourage or encourage voting, generally or specifically for any party or candidates in the impending elections as the polarised views on this subject would only distract from united messages against the injustices done in the name of war on terror. Furthermore, the platform will not be used to promote any divisions and differences.
We would reiterate that the march is to be non-partisan and non-sectarian. We trust that you will agree to send a representative on Sunday to the planning meeting and if you require further information, please phone 07915 063564 and/or email on helpers@stoppoliticalterror.com.
The outline of the flyer that we propose to use is set out below and we wish to add the names of the participating/supporting organisations/individuals after the planning meeting. If you are unable to attend please let us know if we have your support.
We await your urgent reply.
