Bismillahir RahaaniRaheem

All praise be to Allah, and we seek his forgiveness from the evils of our selves. Whomsoever He show the rightoes path none can mislead him, and whosoever He deprives the righteous path none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah(swt), and I bear witness Muhammad(saw) is His servant and final Apostle.

Though a lot more time is required but inshAllah I will try to give the main points regarding what I would like to convey.

As Muslims, unlike Christians, have a complete judicial, social, economic, penal and political system, all of which stem from the foundational principle that Allah (swt) is One and He alone governs all of that. In belief we accept Allah (swt) as Al-Khaaliq (The Creator), Ar-Raaziq (The Provider) and Ash-Shaafi’i (The Curer). All Muslims acknowledge that Allah (swt) possesses at least ninety-nine beautiful names and attributes, through which we can recognise, accept, understand and worship Him (swt) and thus be Muslims.

If any of Allah(swt) names and attributes if given / takean by any object or person, then that is shirk

Let us consider one example. As Muslims we recognize that one of Allah’s attributes is that He alone is The Knower of the Unseen (Al-‘Aalimul Ghayb), “None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (Unseen) except Allah (swt).” (an-Naml 27:65).

Many sects among the Muslims claim that certain spiritual leaders have knowledge of the Unseen, and thus refuge is sought in these spiritual leaders from the evil of what is not perceived. Such sects have allotted a share of the Divinity of Allah (swt) to other than Him. They have taken a partner (shareek) with Allah (swt) just like the disbelieving Quraysh and the Christians.

* In recognition of the fact that Allah (swt) is Ar-Raaziq (The Provider), we surrender to Him alone and ONLY ask Him for provision. When we believe Allah (swt) alone to be the Answerer of Supplications (Mujeebud Daw’aat) then we only supplicate to Him. Allah (swt) said, “And the most beautiful names belong to Allah (swt), so call Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny His names. The will be requited for what they used to do.” (al-‘Araf 7:80).

It is clear from this very angle that it is not befitting for a Muslim to vote, because when we recognise all of the attributes of Allah (swt) then we also accept Him alone to be Al-Hakaam (The Legislator) and Ahkamul Haakimeen (The Most Decisive Judge). Prophet Yusuf said, “Are many different lords better or Allah (swt), The One, The Irresistible? You do not worship besides Him anything but names which you have named –you and your forefathers – for which Allah (swt) has not given any authority. The right of legislation (hukm) is for none but Allah (swt), He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the straight religion, but most men do not know.” (Yusuf 12:39-40).

In order to be a Muslim you must surrender completely to Allah (swt); you must surrender ONLY to Allah (swt). You must worship and recognise Him with your heart, tongue and actions. We must accept ONLY His laws and legislation, as defined clearly in the Qur'aan and Sunnah. If we recognise, believe in, worship or support anything or anybody besides Allah (swt) – handing them the attribute of legislation which belongs to Allah (swt) – then we have not disbelieved and avoided the taghut as we were commanded to, “Haven’t you seen those who claim to believe in that which was sent down to you and that which was sent down before you, and they desire to go for judgement to the taghut while they have only been commanded to disbelieve in it. But Shaytaan wishes to lead them far astray.” (an-Nisa’a 4:60).

* If we vote for, desire or support the legislation of any party or person involved in the democratic system of government, then that constitutes worship of them, as opposed to disbelief in them, and we cannot have iman (belief) in Allah (swt) completely unless we reject all the taghut first, “Verily, the Right Path has been made distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves/rejects the taghut (objects of worship besides Allah) and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold which will never break.” (al-Baqarah 2:256). Unless you do this, you will be like the Quraysh, believing in some aspects of Tawheed and rejecting others, “Then do you believe in a part of the Scripture and reject the rest? Then what is the recompense of those who do so among you, except disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they shall be consigned to the most grievous torment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do. Those are they who have bought the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter. Their torment shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped.” (al-Baqarah 2:85-86).

Now the question is,

Is there any greater sin than SHIRK?

Of course not, shirk is the greatest of all sins, and so there can be no compromise in this issue.

Some Muslims fear that Islam will be ‘given a bad name’ if they act upon Tawheed in such a manner; they say, ‘But non-Muslims will find this extreme, un-conforming or un-integrating!’ To such people, we remind them of Allah’s (swt) sayings, “They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they too would compromise with you.” (al-Qalam 68:9) and, “And so judge between them by that Allah has revealed and do not follow their vain desires, but beware of them in case they turn you far away from some of that which Allah has sent down to you. And if they turn away, then know that Allah’s Will is to punish them for some of their sins. And truly, most of men are sinful . Do they then seek the judgement of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)? And who is better in judgement than Allah for a people who have firm iman (belief)? O you who believe! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as a uliyaa’ (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are only auliyaa’ to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as auliyaa’, then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah does not guide those who are the oppressors . And you see those in whose hearts there is a disease (of hypocrisy), they hurry to their friendship, saying, ‘We fear in case some misfortune of a disaster may befall us.’ Perhaps Allah may bring a victory or a decision according to His Will. Then they will become regretful for what they have been keeping as a secret in themselves. And those who believe will say, ‘Are these the men (hypocrites) who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you (Muslims)?’ All that they did has been in vain (because of their hypocrisy), and they have become the losers. O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islam), Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, harsh towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allah, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers . That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whoever He wills. And Allah is All-*******Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All*******-Knower. Verily, your Wali (Protector or Helper) is Allah, His Messenger, and the believers; those who establish the s alah and give z akah (poor-due) , and they bow down (submit themselves with obedience to Allah). And whoever takes Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed, as Protectors, then the party of Allah will be the victorious. O you who believe! Take not for auliyaa’ (protectors and helpers) those who take your religion for a mockery and fun from among those who received the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before you, nor from among the disbelievers; and fear Allah if you indeed are true believers. And when you proclaim the call for the s alah , they take it as a mockery and fun; that is because they are a people who do not understand. Say, ‘O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Do you criticize us for no other reason than that we believe in Allah, and in that which has been sent down to us and in that which has been sent down before, and that most of you are sinful ?’ Say, ‘ Shall I inform you of something worse than that , regarding the recompense from Allah: those who incurred the Curse of Allah and His Wrath, those of whom (some) He transformed into monkeys and swine, those who worshipped taghut ; such are worse in rank and far more astray from the Right Path’. When they come to you, they say, ‘We believe.’ But in fact they enter with (an intention of) disbelief and they go out with the same. And Allah knows all that they were hiding. And you see many of them hurrying towards sin and transgression, and consuming illegal things. Evil indeed is that which they have been doing.” (al-Ma’idah 5:49-62).

In voting, you have not only supported people in snatching away Allah’s (swt) divine right to legislate, but you have also handed it to those who are unworthy of it and you have worshipped them by accepting them as your lords instead of the Rabbil ‘Aalimeen (Lord of all that exists). There is no doubt: a believer will distance himself or herself as much as is physically possible from such disbelief and polytheism. We have conveyed what is necessary, now it is p to you to make your choice: WHO DO YOU WORSHIP? THE CREATOR OR THE CREATION?

“Haven’t you seen those who claim to believe in that which was sent down to you and that which was sent down before you, and they desire to go for judgement to the taghut while they have only been commanded to disbelieve in it. But Shaytaan wishes to lead them far astray.” (4:60)

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa baraaktuhu,

Jazakallahu khayran brother SHAQ1_99 for your post. But with all due respect I disagree with some of what you say.

The Scholars such as Ibn Tamiyyah have stated one of the main aims of the Shariah which is that the Shariah overall came to bring or increase good (masaalih) and to deter or reduce evil (mafaasid).

So therefore when one is faced with two evils, one of which is greater than the other, then the lesser of two evils must be commited in order to prevent the greater harm - and this by no means necessitates approval of that harm.

Let's look at a scenario to clarify this point; Lets say you are in an area where you the adhaan of the masjid is given loudly. So you hear the adhaan for salat being called (and according to the stronger opinion you must respond to that call and pray in congregation) and at the same time you see a Muslim drinking alcohol and you have the ability to forbid him from doing so.

So you have two choices; you can either forbid this brother from drinking alcohol in which case you will miss salat in congregation or you can attend salat in congregation and miss the oppurtunity to forbid that Muslim from that evil.

What do you do?

The Scholars say that you must chose the option which results in greater benefit or lesser harm; which in this case would be to forbid that Muslim from that evil there and then because otherwise you will miss the chance to do so and the act of drinking alcohol may spread to others even though you will miss salat in congregation which in this case is the lesser of two evils.

I hope the example is clear.

Now moving on, there are many evidence from the Quran and sunnah which prove the validity of this principle of choosing the lesser of two evils.

An example from the Quran: We know that it is from our aqeedah to tell others the false way of the Kuffar in regards to worshipping false gods along side Allah. So we may insult their false idols in order to show them their false ways.

The Prophet (saws) would do this, until one day when the mushrikeen said the Prophet's uncle that if he doesnt stop insulting our gods then we will insult his God (i.e. Allah). So Allah revealed a verse prohibiting us to insult their false gods IF it leads to them insulting Allah and His Messenger without knowledge.

So we see that not insulting / pointing out their false gods is an evil. But Allah and His Messenger being insulted by the Kuffar is a greater evil. So Allah told us to do lesser of two evils which is not to insult their false gods in this case.

An example from the sunnah: We know the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (saws) where he said that "I have an urge/desire to order for the adhaan to be given and then I appoint an Imam to lead salat, and then I go around and burn the houses of those who do not go to pray in the mosque."

So If Prophet had done that then he would have missed salat in congregation in the masjid which is an evil. But it is a greater evil that for the men (who are able) to not go to the mosque to pray in congregation. But the Prophet missing salat in conregation would have been a lesser evil in comparison to groups of men missing salat in congregation.

These two are but 2 of many examples.

So based on the above, the Scholars who allow voting in these circumstances with certain conditions, base their opinion on this principle of chosing the lesser of two evils. Because if we do not vote then we allow the anti-Muslim MPs to stay in power and further their harm to the Muslims. On the other hand we may use tactical voting to unseat these MPs. And doing so does not mean that we approve of their methods of legislation, and we do not believe that their legislation is equal to or better than the law of Allah. Reputable Scholars hold such opinions such as Sheikh Salih Al-Munajjid, Sheikh Salman al-'Awdah, Sheikh Haitham and others...

Jazakallah khayr for taking the time to read this and I ask Allah's forgiveness for any mistakes therein.

P.S. This is a matter of difference among the Scholars so I believe that we shouldnt make it a matter of disunity between us Muslims.

Assalamualaikum
