Assalamu alaikum,

I have recently had some discussions with some Asha'ira, and need some clarification, as I am still confused with this issue:

THEY affirm the sifat of Allah - by name alone - and leave the meaning and nature to Allah.

Ahlus-Sunnah affirm the meanings of the sifat, but leave the nature to Allah.

What is the evidence for this viewpoint as opposed to the ash'ari one?******* I have some idea as to why this is the case but need some concrete proof, including statements of 'neutral' ulama, i.e. from the salaf.******* Every place I've looked so far has mentioned that the*******salaf have said words to the effect of "Leave them as they are" or "Affirm them, but do not ask how".******* The problem with these statements is that they can be taken by either party.******* i.e. the asha'ira would say that these statements mean that we affirm the word 'yadd', but we do not interpret it - i.e. we just affirm the word!*******

I realise some Ash'aris go further and interpret the words in a different way, but there are some who do not do so, it seems...

Jazakumullahu khairan

Wassalam
