The Hereafter (Part 1)

Lectures notes from the series by Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki

1. Introduction

 Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 1, Number 1]

 We believe we belong here. This is reflected in our actions and day-to-day activities. But in reality, this life is just temporary. This world is just one stop in a journey. Consider each person to have a ticket with 3 Slips. Allah creates us and puts us in the womb, and when we come out, the 1st Slip is taken. Then we live our lives in this Dunya and when we die, the 2nd Slip is taken. Finally, the 3rd Slip is taken when we enter either Jannah [Paradise] or Al- Nar [The Fire].

 Narrated Mujahid: 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said, "Allah's Apostle took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." The sub-narrator added: Ibn 'Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 425]

 Allah's Apostle said, "My similitude and that of the life of this world is that of a traveller who took a rest at mid-day under a shade of a tree and then left it." [Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and al-Hakim]

 The movement of Time in this world is an erosion of our existence. As every second passes, we come closer to the end of this life. But the problem is, we live in a state of denial. We need to believe that we do not belong here. Only then, can we prepare for death and the hereafter.

 Why talk about all this? Well because it is part of the Pillars of Imaan. “… Faith in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil…” [Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0001]

 Look around you! Why are we in the state we are in now? It can’t only be ignorance! Ask yourself this, why is it that we have so many Muslims that drink? When we all know Alcohol is haram? Why do we have so many Muslims who commit adultery? When we all know Zinha is haram? Why do have so many Muslims who take Riba? Yet we all know Riba is forbidden? And why do we have Muslims who do not pray? When we know Salah is obligatory? Why do have Muslims who do not go for Hajj? Even when they can afford to! Why do we have these problems around us? What is missing?

 Narrated Yusuf bin Mahk: 'Aisha said, “…That the first thing that was revealed thereof was a Sura from Al-Mufassal, and in it was mentioned Paradise and the Fire. When the people embraced Islam, the Verses regarding legal and illegal things were revealed. If the first thing to be revealed was: 'Do not drink alcoholic drinks.' people would have said, 'We will never leave alcoholic drinks,' and if there had been revealed, 'Do not commit illegal sexual intercourse, 'they would have said, 'We will never give up illegal sexual intercourse.' ...” [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 61, Number 515 ; Sahih Muslim, Volume 6, Book 61, Number 515]

 So the one of the problems is the weakness of Imaan. And the hearts have become rough like rocks, and its learning about the Akhira, that will soften it. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "If you knew that which I know you would laugh little and weep much." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 492]

 It is mentioned of Ali ibn Abi Talib (May Allah be pleased with him) that he said “It wouldn’t make a difference if I see Jannah in front of me- I wouldn’t love it more. And even if I see hellfire in front of me I wouldn’t fear it more.” i.e., Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) had absorbed the meaning of Jannah so much that it wouldn’t make a difference if he saw it; He was living in this Dunya as if he was seeing Jannah and hellfire in front of him.

 In America, in 1930, Alcohol was banned. It started getting bootlegged and the process of making alcohol is so dirty, so diseases started spreading, millions were lost because of increased crime, and after 4 years, the law was changed. This shows that the most powerful nation on earth couldn’t even ban one thing, without havoc.

 Compare that without what happened 1400 years back. Jibreel came down with these verses, “O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al¬Ansâb, and Al¬Azlâm (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitân's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful. Shaitân (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allâh and from As-Salât (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain? And obey Allâh and the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and beware (of even coming near to drinking or gambling or Al¬Ansâb, or Al¬Azlâm, etc.) and fear Allâh. Then if you turn away, you should know that it is Our Messenger's duty to convey (the Message) in the clearest way.” (Al-Ma'idah 5:90 - 92) and the prophet peace be upon him, without any police or National Guard, recited the ayat to the companions and they went around in the streets telling people alcohol is haram.

 Anas ibn Malik was serving alcohol to some sahabah. When they herd the ruling, some throw the alcohol on the floor, some spat it out and some even threw up! And on that day, the streets of Medinah were flowing with alcohol. There was immediate obedience, without using money, police, etc. so why did it work in Medinah? and not in America? Because the Muslims were prepared for it! Hence, we need to increase our imaan and prepare for the Akhira.

2. Minor Day of Judgement

 What is the Minor day of judgement and when does it start?

2.1 Death

 Narrated Anas: A Bedouin came to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! When will The Hour be established?" The Prophet said, "Wailaka (Woe to you), What have you prepared for it?" The Bedouin said, "I have not prepared anything for it, except that I love Allah and H is Apostle." The Prophet said, "You will be with those whom you love." We (the companions of the Prophet ) said, "And will we too be so? The Prophet said, "Yes." So we became very glad on that day. In the meantime, a slave of Al-Mughira passed by, and he was of the same age as I was. The Prophet said. "If this (slave) should live long, he will not reach the geriatric old age, but the Hour will be established." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 188]

 This means the Prophet (peace be upon him) was saying to them, if this young boy was to live long, by the time he reaches old age, your (Minor) Day of Judgement would have started i.e. Death.

 Narrated 'Aisha: Some rough Bedouins used to visit the Prophet and ask him, "When will the Hour be?" He would look at the youngest of all of them and say, "If this should live till he is very old, your Hour (the death of the people addressed) will take place." Hisham said that he meant (by the Hour), their death. [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 518]

 Hence death is the beginning of the Day of Judgement. Once you die, that’s the end, you will be counted as being on the other side. This is what is known as the Minor Day Of Judgement.

 There is no way round death. Everything will perish. Allah says in the Qur’an: “And invoke not any other ilâh (god) along with Allâh, Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Everything will perish save His Face. His is the Decision, and to Him you (all) shall be returned.” (Al-Qasas 28:88)

 Everything will Perish, except Allah. Nothing will survive, but Allah. Allah says in the Qur’an, “Everyone is going to taste death, and We shall make a trial of you with evil and with good, and to Us you will be returned.” (Al-Anbiya 21:35)

 Only the Prophet (peace be upon him) would survive if anything would have, but even for him Allah says in the Qur’an, “Verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) will die and verily, they (too) will die.” (Az-Zumar 39:30)

 Everything will die. The time is fixed and will cannot be changed. You can’t reduce it one second or increase it one second. Allah says in the Qur’an, “And no person can ever die except by Allah’s Leave and at an appointed term. And whoever desires a reward in (this) world, We shall give him of it; and whoever desires a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give him thereof. And We shall reward the grateful.” (Aali Imran 3:145) This is for individuals and Nations. Allah says, “And every nation has its appointed term; when their term is reached, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment).” (Al-A'raf 7:34)

 We cannot run away from death. Allah says in the Qur’an, “Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!" And if some good reaches them, they say, "This is from Allâh," but if some evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you (O Muhammad SAW)." Say: "All things are from Allâh," so what is wrong with these people that they fail to understand any word? (An-Nisa 4:78)

 Allah even tells us a story about this in the Qur’an, “Did you (O Muhammad ) not think of those who went forth from their homes in thousands, fearing death? Allâh said to them, "Die". And then He restored them to life. Truly, Allâh is full of Bounty to mankind, but most men thank not.” (Al-Baqarah 2:243)

 These people were from Bani Israel, an army was attacking the, so they wanted to save their lives, so they went out of their town in thousands. They thought they could run away from death. But Allah said to the “Die!”. You are running away from death? So Die! But then Allah raised them up again, to show His miracle on them, and then he restored them their lives Truly, Allâh is full of Bounty to mankind. [It should be noted that there is a slightly different version of this story in Tafsir of Ibn Katheer, but the main part of it is still the same, i.e. the running away from death and resurrection]

 Abdullah reported that Umm Habibah, the wife of Allah's Apostle (May peace be upon him), said: 0 Allah, enable me to derive benefit from my husband, the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), and from my father Abu Sufyan and from my brother Mu'awiyah. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: You have asked from Allah about durations of life already set, and the length of days already allotted and the sustenance the share of which has been fixed. Allah would not do anything earlier before its due time or He would not delay anything beyond its due time. And if you were to ask Allah to provide you refuge from the torment of the Hellfire, or from the torment of the grave, it would have good in store for you and better for you also…” [Sahih Muslim, Book 033, Number 6438]

 You time in this Dunya is set. This is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked his wife why she asked for these things? Which have already been ordained and won’t be changed? Then he recommended her to make Dua and seek refuge in Allah.

 Here is a recent story that will shed light on this. A man was walking on the 7th floor of a building in Riyadh. He was a construction worker and he slipped and fell to the ground. Everyone thought he was dead and went to see what happened. To their amazement, he stood up! This man had landed on the sidewalk, from the 7th floor, and he jumped up in joy. He couldn’t believe he was alive. He was so happy and surprised that he told everyone that I am going to invite you for drinks. So he proceeded to the shop across the road, but because he was still a bit dazed, he didn’t see the approaching traffic and was hit by a car and died! Subhan’Allah, Allah had brought him to the place of his death. The Angel of death was not waiting for him at the side walk, but was actually waiting for him in the middle of the road!!

 Death comes unannounced, suddenly. If you read about earthquakes, sometimes you find the most amazing stories. For instance there was a man who was with his mother and sister (or wife and sister), and there was a big earthquake. He was trapped with those two women beside him. After a long period (days), the authorities had actually assumed everyone was dead because it seemed it impossible to survive. But to their surprise, they managed to find this man alive! And the two women were dead next to him, because it seemed impossible for anyone to have survived. But his time wasn’t up. No one can cheat death, because when your time is up, you can’t do anything about it. And even if it seems to have cheated death, the reality is that your time just hadn’t come yet, but it will.

 Another example I can personally give is that of my Uncle. He and his family had gone to Pakistan. When the were travelling, by road, to another city, the van lost control and hit the side of the barrier. Amazingly, everyone was fine, including the person sitting right next to him. He, however, hurt his back and was taken to hospital. After some time (a few weeks I think), all seemed well and he was getting transferred back to UK. But before he left, he caught some kind of Bug (or the operation had not gone well as planned) and when he came back to UK, he went straight to the hospital and afew days (or weeks) later, he passed away. This makes you reflect on the shortness of life. He had just storted the marriages of his three daughters and he time was up. But what we should realise is that the Angel of Death was waiting for him in that UK hospital. The accident was on the road, the operation was in Pakistan, but his time and place (decreed by Allah) of death would be in completely different continent.

 It’s something you can never plan or even expect. The time you die, and the place you die or will die has been already decreed. And Allah alone knows the unseen. You should even reflect that the fact that although he did not die on the road or in Pakistan, everything that happened, happened so that he would end up in a hospital in UK, i.e. he was merely being sent to the place that his soul would be taken. And Subhan’Allah, isn’t that life? A journey? All we are doing is walking towards our graves. Even if it seems like you have been saved from an accident, or had some miracle in life, do not be fooled to think you have just been blessed with a longer life, or you have some how cheated death. The fact is that you have appointment with the angel of death, and the things that happen in your life and simple leading you to that moment, when you soul will be taken and you take your last breath. We don’t know when our time will be up and where it will happen. This is why we should make the most of the time we have [to Worship Allah], before it’s too late. To Allah We Belong and To Allah We Return.

 We all seem to think we can prepare for death, but sometimes it comes so suddenly that you would not imagine how fast it could happen. An example of this is when two planes collide in the air. It has happened several times in many places. Just imagine travelling at that speed. You could be sitting and look out the window and maybe eating or drinking something. And as soon as you lift up your glass to take a sip, the planes hits another (at the same speed) and you well die before that glass reaches your lips! The combined speed would probably be about 1600 mph. look at how fast people die travelling in the motor way at speeds of 100 mph, and then compare that with planes colliding!! Subhan’Allah.

 We need to talk about death all the time. The Messenger of Allaah (sallahu alihi wa-sallam) referred to death as 'the destroyer of desires." [Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah & Nasaai and authenticated by Sheikh al-Albanee in al-Mishkaat (1/1607)]

 Al – Hassan Al – Basri said, “Anything that is certain with no doubt with it, but people deal with it with no certainity like death”. We are all certain about death (Muslim and non Muslim), have you ever seen anyone who doesn’t believe in death? Yet Al-Hasan Al- Basri says the way we deal with it is as if it’s doubtful. Look at how we deal with the provisions on this world. No one is ever sure how about what they will get or have in this world, yet we always strive to get more. We try so hard to get something that has been written (decreed); something that we cannot reduce or increase. But when it comes to death, which is a reality, we treat it as if it may pass us (or never happen). So why do we prepare to go out tomorrow in search of better and more provisions, which is doubtful, yet we never prepare for death, which is a reality?

 Subhan’Allah, even those who do prepare for death, they prepare of the Dunya side of the equation only. They will prepare for a funeral, for a grave, for a burial, etc. but they will invest nothing for the life in the hereafter.

 Isaac Asimov, [who was a well known science fiction writer and had some of his stories made into movies, like I, Robot Bicentennial Man] in an interview, before his death, he was asked, “what do you think will happen to you after you die”. This is one of the most prominent science fiction writers the world has seen. He said, “Nothing…nothing will happen to me when I die. I will turn into dust”. Subhan’Allah, this man was seen as a very intelligent man, but the truth is that his intellect is no different like the ones of the people of jahiliya (who rejected resurrection). It shows no matter how smarter we think he is, his intelligent did not make him different from the ignorant people before. Infact, his intellect would be considered to be nothing. Allah says in the Quran that when the disbelievers are resurrected, they will say, “And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror. (They will say): "Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this; nay, but we were Zâliműn (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.)." (Al-Anbiya 21:97)

 The will be confused and angry at themselves. Because they will understand that it was there evil ways that will make them suffer. That fact is that if they had any real intelligent, they would have saved themselves from the Hell Fire! Because if your mind leads you to hell fire, then surely you are of the ignorant people. Allah says in the Qur’an, “And Allâh has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing. And He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks (to Allâh).” (An-Nahl 16:78) That’s why we have been given these things, ie we used them together to worship Allah.

 When we talk about death, the veils of unawareness will be lifted. This will make you see the reality of this world. The truth of our existence and the correct purpose of life. We are blind by desires of this Dunya and talking about death and the Akhira (hereafter), will help you lift the veil and open you eyes

2.2 The Period Before Death

 This is like the preparation of death. In this stage, the angels descend. Allah says, “He is the Irresistible, Supreme over His slaves, and He sends guardians (angels guarding and writing all of one's good and bad deeds) over you, until when death approaches one of you, Our Messengers (angel of death and his assistants) take his soul, and they never neglect their duty.” (Al-An'am 6:61)

 The person who is in this stage will be able to see the angels. It was narrated that al-Bara’ (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “…When the believing slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him from heaven angels with white faces like the sun, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. They bring with them shrouds from Paradise and perfumes from Paradise. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, and he says, ‘O good soul, come forth to forgiveness from Allaah and His pleasure.’ Then it comes out easily like a drop of water from the mouth of a waterskin. …”

 “…But when the disbelieving slave is about to depart this world and enter the Hereafter, there come down to him from heaven angels with black faces, bringing sackcloth, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, and he says, ‘O evil soul, come forth to the wrath of Allaah and His anger.’ Then his soul disperses inside his body, and then comes out cutting the veins and nerves, like a skewer passing through wet wool…” [Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4753; Ahmad, 18063 – this version was narrated by him. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1676]

 During this time, even the believer may feel some anxienty, but Allah gives them the glad news, “Verily, those who say: "Our Lord is (only) Allâh," and thereafter Istaqâmű (i.e. stood firm and straight on the Islâmic Faith of Monotheism by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which Allâh has forbidden and by performing all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained), on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-Ahqaf 46:13). So Allah tells the angels to give the believing soul glad tidings. But you should not that these applies to those who believe in Allah AND stay firm. So we cannot say we are believers, when we spend some days in the mosque, and some at home, or one day in the night club and the next day Itikaaf (seclusion in the Mosque), or the fast and next day drink alcohol. The believers Allah is referring to are the ones that are firm in their belief (and hence in their actions).

 For the desibeliever, Allah says, “And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death), they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): "Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire." "This is because of that which your hands had forwarded. And verily, Allâh is not unjust to His slaves." (Al-Anfal 8: 50 - 51). So the angels will be hitting them and beating them, but Allah says that he is not being in just, but they are getting what the deserved after what they did in this Dunya.

 Ata'a bin Rabah said there are three benefits of remembering death:-

1) You would hasten to repent. If you are always thinking about death, you will think about the hereafter and hence repent before it’s too late.

2) You would be content with the minimum. You would be happy with Allah gives you because this life is just temporary and you main concern will be the akhirah.

3) You will not fight and compete with the people of this world over this world. And this will cause you to have tranquillity in your heart because what makes people anxious and obnoxious is when they compete over this world. The reality is that this world is small and our desires (and needs) are large. So we will always compete with each other. But if a believer understands that this world is temporary, he will be less likely to be (unnecessarily) competitive and hence will not go through the same worries and stresses. Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: I heard the Prophet saying, "If the son of Adam (the human being) had two valley of money, he would wish for a third, for nothing can fill the belly of Adam's son except dust, and Allah forgives him who repents to Him." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 444] Even if you look at wars in this world, they are always form some material gain in this Dunya; it could be oil, land, gold, minerals, etc. and this is why the only justified war is Jihad, because it is for the sake of Allah. The west attacks Jihad and says their wars are for things like human rights. This is obviously a lie and something they use to deceive the public [look at the wars in Kuwait, Iraq, Bosnia, etc]. The evidence of this is that there has been not one country that has ever attained peace because of war. Yet we know of many that did, because of Jihad. If you read back in history, Insha’Allah you will see many examples of this. This is because Jihad is the struggle for peace.

2.3 Sakaratul Mawt

 What is Sakaratul Mawt? It is the dizziness and unconsciousness brought about by pain. So this person is falling in and out of consciousness before he dies. Allah says, “And the stupor of death will come in truth: "This is what you have been avoiding!" (Qaf 50:19) Everyone feels this agony, Narrated Aisha: While the Prophet (peace be upon him was nearing death, “..In front of him there was a jug or a tin, containing water. He started dipping his hand in the water and rubbing his face with it, he said, "None has the right to be worshipped except Allah. Death has its agonies." …”[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 730].

 So even the Prophet Of Allah (peace be upon him) felt the agonies of death. Subhan’Allah, if he felt this pain, imagine what the believer will feel, or imagine what the disbeliever will feel! Allah says, “And who can be more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allâh, or says: "I have received inspiration," whereas he is not inspired in anything; and who says, "I will reveal the like of what Allâh has revealed." And if you could but see when the Zâliműn (polytheists and wrong¬doers, etc.) are in the agonies of death, while the angels are stretching forth their hands (saying): "Deliver your souls! This day you shall be recompensed with the torment of degradation because of what you used to utter against Allâh other than the truth. And you used to reject His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) with disrespect!" (Al-An'am 6:93)

 So everyone feels this pain. However it comes in different levels and some will feel more pain than others. In fact there is a small group that does not feel almost any pain at all! They are the Shaheed (Martyrs). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The Shaheed does not feel [any pain] from killing, except as one of you feels the prick of a needle” [Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasaa`I and the Sanad is Hasan]

 Whenever everyone dies, they want to come back. The disbeliever wants to come back and become a Muslim, the sinner wants to come back and repent. Allah says, “Until, when death comes to one of them (those who join partners with Allâh), he says: "My Lord! Send me back, "So that I may do good in that which I have left behind!" No! It is but a word that he speaks, and behind them is Barzakh (a barrier) until the Day when they will be resurrected.” (Al-Mu'minun 23: 99 - 100) But by then its too late, your time is up. As soon as you leave, a barrier (the Barzakh) is put behind you and you will not be able to leave. Allah is giving you the opportunity to repent and come back to the straight now, before it’s too late. Because when that time comes, Tawbah (repentance) will not be accepted.

 Allah says, “Allâh accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon afterwards; it is they to whom Allâh will forgive and Allâh is Ever All¬Knower, All¬Wise.” (An-Nisa 4:17) When Allah says “soon”, what does that mean? Ibn Katheer says you have the opportunity to repent until the soul is ready to leave the body. Ibn ‘Umar reported the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: - “Allah, most Gracious and most Glorious, will except His servant’s repentance until his death rattle begins.” [Sahih Sunan Ibn Majaah, vol. 2, No. 3430; Authenticated by Al - Albaani] This is important because sometimes we live in this live thinking we can do what we want and repent at the end, but Allah says, “And of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: "Now I repent;" nor of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful torment.” (An-Nisa 4:18)

 An example of this is what the Pharoah said before he died. Allah says about this in the Qur’an, “And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Fir'aun (Pharaoh) with his hosts followed them in oppression and enmity, till when drowning overtook him, he said: "I believe that Lâ ilâha illa (Huwa): (none has the right to be worshipped but) He," in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims (those who submit to Allâh's Will)." Now (you believe) while you refused to believe before and you were one of the Mufsidűn (evil-doers, corrupts, etc.). So this day We shall deliver your (dead) body (out from the sea) that you may be a sign to those who come after you! And verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs , revelations, etc.). (Yunus 10:90 - 92)

 We should understand that death comes unannounced. It doesn’t inform you before it comes. No matter what you are doing or say, death will come to you when your time is up. So shouldn’t we reflect upon this and repent now, before it will not be accepted? Allah says, “Allâh has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Qur'ân), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allâh. That is the guidance of Allâh. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no guide.” (Az-Zumar 39:23)

 If you look at the majority of Ayats in the Qur’an that talk about punishment in Hell, you will notice how all of the people are not screaming about injustice, but regret. They all wish they could come back and do it better (i.e. become a Muslim and repent to Allah). Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit: The Prophet said, "Who-ever loves to meet Allah, Allah (too) loves to meet him and who-ever hates to meet Allah, Allah (too) hates to meet him". 'Aisha, or some of the wives of the Prophet said, "But we dislike death." He said: It is not like this, but it is meant that when the time of the death of a believer approaches, he receives the good news of Allah's pleasure with him and His blessings upon him, and so at that time nothing is dearer to him than what is in front of him. He therefore loves the meeting with Allah, and Allah (too) loves the meeting with him. But when the time of the death of a disbeliever approaches, he receives the evil news of Allah's torment and His Requital, whereupon nothing is more hateful to him than what is before him. Therefore, he hates the meeting with Allah, and Allah too, hates the meeting with him." [Sahih Bukhauri, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 514]

 This is explains why we told to burry the dead quickly and not delay. Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri The Prophet said, "When a funeral is ready and the men carry the deceased on their necks (shoulders), if it was pious then it will say, 'Present me quickly', and if it was not pious, then it will say, 'Woe to it (me), where are they taking it (me)?' And its voice is heard by everything except mankind and if he heard it he would fall unconscious." [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 23, Number 402]. The good soul wants its reward, while we do not wish to keep the bad soul amongst us, hence we hurry the burrial. And if we could hear the cries of the soul, the shock would kill everyone who herd it! Narrated Zaid b. Thibit: Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said “…If it were not the reason that you would stop burying (your dead) in the graves on listening to the torment in the grave which I am listening to, I would have certainly made you hear that…” [Sahih Muslim, Book 040, Number 6859]
