Assalaam alaikum,

simple question for some one with knowledge, i'm sure...

when exactly does one use the term "alais salaam" (pardon the transliteration).

I can't seem to find a pattern...i've seen it alongside the names of Gibrael, Maryam and Imam Ali....

May Allah (SWT) accept all our efforts and overlook our shortcomings.

wasalaam alaikum

Wa alaykumusalaam

‘Alayhi salaam
whenever you say the name of a prophet
Translation: Peace be upon him

Radi Allah ‘Anhu would be said after Ali (Radi Allah ‘Anhu)
whenever say name of male companion of the Prophet (Sahabi)
Translation: May Allah be pleased with him (R.A.)

Jazakallah Khairun.

Why is it often seen / mentioned after the names of Gibrael and Maryam??
This is where the confusion kicks in....

Yes, it's also used after angels.

It's just an arbitrary standard that the scholars decided upon and is now the common practise. And we all should stick with it, unlike some of the deviant sects who try playing games with this system to push their own ideologies upon us.
