In laws???????????

As salaamu alaykum ikhaani wa akhawaati,

My wife has is reading the book "My advice to the women" by Umm Abdilah al Waadi'iyah, in which, she quotes a saheeh hadeeth

"الحمو الموت"

The problem is, the translation...

It is translated as the "father in law" is death..??

However, I have read this from Imaam An Nawawi:

"Commenting on this Hadith, Imam An-Nawawi, may Allah bless his soul, states: "Al-Layth Ibn Sa`d holds that the “the in-law” refers to a relative of the husband other than his father and sons (who are Mahram (unmarriageable kin) to his wife), such as his brother, nephew, and cousin, etc., with whom marriage would be permissible for her, if she were to be divorced or widowed"

commentary on Sahih Muslim, Kitab As-Salam (Book on Salutations and Greetings), Chapter 8, Hadith no 5400.

Is is therefore an incorrect translation?

Both translations are wrong.

Yes, al-Hamu linguistically refers to all the immediate relatives of the husband, such as his father, brother, etc... The hadeeth in particular is referring to the husband's brother, and not the father.

al-Nawawi does not say: other than the father and his sons.. he quotes al-Layth saying: al-Hamu: Husband's brother and the like from the husband's relatives, such as his cousin, etc.

When I tell people that I dont trust or rely on translations they usually give me strange looks, but I have seen so many bad examples of translations that I am determined to learn Arabic [bi'ithnillah] so that I don't have to keep being disappointed with English books on Islam.

I have this book and was also informed of this error in the book

do you know of any other errors in the book?

maybe it was a printing error because in my copy they have also printed her name, on the top of each page as "Umm 'Adillaah" rather than "Umm 'Abdillaah"
