As-salamu'alaykum,
I'm new and hear. I have come hear to learn about the worship of Allah(subhana wa tallah) and free myself from the burden and menace of jahili, and things that may lead to shirk.
I thank Allah(subhana wa tallah) from my heart a for presenting me with the deen of Islam not long ago. Before I said my shahada I was basically a Trinitarian. Breaking free of this form of idolatry was the best thing that ever happened to me. I picked up a Yusuf Ali translation of the Qur'an and said my shahada four months later. Al-hamdulallah.
I need help more than anything and I hope it is not against the perfection of tauheed to ask for it. I have been trying to learn on my own and bouncing around from one school of Islamic (and not so Islamic) thought to another. I have become confused now. I have read some posts hear and this sounds like the same message I hear at my Masjid.
la ill-laha ill-lahla, Muhammad arsooul allah.

Assalam alaikum
Here are some really good basic books by bilal philips that you may find useful insha'Allah.
he goes thru all the basics and is designed for children and reverts.
Islamic Studies (Book1 -4)
http://www.darussalam.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=islamic+studie s&osCsid=e9cc56a3fcf4327d612223a6d299cceb
http://www.bilalphilips.com/content_display.php?c=282&p=#anc7
If you want to understand the whole issue of School of thoughts,
I would recommend "The Evolution of Fiqh" by Bilal Philips.
http://www.darussalam.com/product_info.php?products_id=23
The thing is that he was also a revert, and he wrote a very simple book explaining how the school of thoughts came about and how we should deal with them.
In terms of Tawheed, There are afew books i would recommend, but for now, the basic one i would recommend is:
The Fundamentals of Tawheed by Bilal philips,
http://www.simplyislam.com/iteminfo.asp?item=50747
because he cover many modern day misconceptions and even goes into issues of superstitions
----------------------------------------
Islamic knowledge is alot, and trying to learn everything is difficult.
Thats why the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the nights." (See Fath-ul-Bari, Page 102, Vol 1). [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 38]
So Focus on the important topics first.
Think of your deen (religion) as a building. before you start construction of the top part of it, you need to make sure your base (basics) is strong and firm (and correct)
Thats what the islamic studies books are perfect.
When you want info on somthing specific, just let us know and we will try help insha'Allah
Jazaka'Allahu khayrn
