is it permissible to say salaat wa salaam upon the prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) in a way, where you're directly talking to him, i.e.:

"allaahumma salli wa sallim alayKA ya sayyidi ya rasool Allaah" ?

also, is durood the urdu way of sayying "salaat wa salaam"? because i haven't come accross arabic literature calling it darood.

There is nothing wrong with addressing the Prophet in order to send Salams upon him:

SallAllahu 'alayka ya RasulAllah; so long as one does not request something of him.

But this:

allaahumma salli wa sallim alayKA ya sayyidi ya rasool Allaah

Doesn't sound right, because Allahumma is addressing Allah, and then alayka ya sayyidi is addressing the Prophet. It is like this:

O Allah! Send Salah and Salam upon you, O my master, O Messenger of God. <-- sounds weird.

And yes, I don't know the origins of the word 'durud'. It might be Persian.

Having said that, as it is reported in al-Bukhari, some of the companions changed their tashahhud from: al-Salamu 'alayka ya ayyuhan-nabi to: al-salaamu 'alan-nabi.

i know it sounds weird but shaykh umar abdul-kaafi says it that way TWICE in his lecture "mufsidaat al-quloob", (there's also "wa baarik" in the salaat wa tasleem)

if someone were to do that form of tashahhud in their salaah today, is that okay?
