Asalamu alaykum
I just came across the following saying made by "ustadh" abdullah Hamid Ali who is an ashari. This is how he tried to refute the hadith of the slave woman:
"Likewise, they use as proof for the confirmation of place the hadeeth of the black (slave) woman that when the Prophet – may Allah bless and grant him peace – said, “Where is Allah?” She said, “In the sky.” Then he said, “Free her, because she is a believer.” And the Prophet – may Allah bless and grant him peace – didn’t confirm faith for her by her acknowledgement of the place for Allah. Rather, (he did) because she believed in the apparent meanings (in the verses) that he with which he came (indicating) that Allah is in the sky. So, she was included amongst the sum total of the firmly grounded who believe in the mutashaabih (ambiguous) without discovering its meaning."

I dont know about everyone else but it seems to me that he is basically confirming ahle sunnah's view that Allah is above heavens and instead his refutation has been turned upside down. he says " she believed in the APPARENT meanings (in the verses) that he came indicating Allah is in the sky. so she was included amongst the sum total of the firmly grounded who believe in the mutashaabih without discovering its meaning."
Isnt this what salafis/Hanablis do as we affirm the apparent meanings? What a joker
