(This will be simultaneous here and on Multaqa Ahl al-Hadith (http://ahlalhdeeth.com/vbe/showthread.php?t=93))
This is a brief overview of the objectives and methods I plan to use for this course
As-Salamu `Alaykum wa Rahmatullah
Welcome to our lessons in `Ulum al-Hadith.
Methodology
This course will be made up of weekly lessons covering the essentials of the Hadith Sciences that one would typically cover in a beginners' textbook on `Ulum al-Hadith.
Throughout the course, I will endeavor to draw attention to important issues related to Hadith concerning which average Muslims may have some misconceptions or concerning which the Qur'aniyyun or the Orientalists have caused confusion. This is particularly important in this time when there are many ideological attacks on our religion taking place from within and from without. In particular, considerable effort has been made to attack the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. For that reason, it is important for the Muslim to have an understanding of the measures taken by our scholars to preserve the Sunnah and to distinguish authentic narrations from ones that are false or doubtful.
The students are encouraged to ask questions about every lesson.
I am moving to a new city next week which will cause a slight delay in the beginning of the lessons, but we will begin and continue promptly as soon as I have shifted, in sha Allah.
In sha Allah, there will be one thread that will serve as a table of contents for all the lessons and each lesson will have its own thread.
Sources
Throughout the course I may draw on various important books in this field such as ibn Kathir's Ikhtisar `Ulum al-Hadith - along with Ahmad Shakir's commentary al-Ba'ith al-Hathith - Muqaddimah ibn al-Salah, ibn Hajar's al-Nukat, ibn Rajab's Sharh `Ilal al-Tirmidhi, amongst many other works, both classical and contemporary.
In particular, one contemporary work I intend to make great use of is Sharh Lughat al-Muhaddith by Sh. Abu Mu`adh Tariq `Awadillah, a contemporary hadith scholar from Egypt. His work is very well arranged and intended for the beginner, making it very much suitable for this course, in sha Allah.
English Resources
I have comiled a list of English resources on Hadith that the reader may refer to here (http://islamicsciences.wordpress.com/hadith-resources/).
