Wa 'alaykum usalaam.
What kind of speech ?
As in, standing on stage in front of a large crowd (mainly respected elders of the community) and addressing them about the Muslim Youth.

Firstly you need to be well prepared , know the topic that you will choose inside and out ,so if your asked any questions your ready to reply to questions.
Choose a topic that best suits your audience , ask what topics they would like to hear about . Reference your ayaahs with the sura and hadiths with the book like bukhari or sunan Abu Dawud.
Dont speak in the same tone through out or you will sound robotic practice your speech infront of family and friends , add something funny to keep your audiences attention , if you are able to relax then try to look all around the hall and dont fix your attention on your papers.

From my experience, I have noticed that whenever I prepare a lecture it goes really bad, yet whenever I don't prepare anything and speak from the top of my head, it goes much better.
I guess it is all about getting emotionally into the topic and speaking from your heart, instead of reading a script or referring to some notes.
Mental notes, for me at least, are the best. Plus, I get to speak to the crowd in a very relaxed fashion, as if I am having one to one conversation, as if I am speaking to everyone in the audience (bar those who fall asleep!)

Alhamdulillah, some very good advice. I guess what I need to do is simply prepare the skeleton, and then slap on the meat on the day. O and Practice makes perfect.

Some (http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-get-over-your-fear-of-public-speaking.html)believe that practicing in front of mirror would yield good result. Maybe you can give it a try.
Khalid Yasin mentioned in his dawah technique (http://multimedia.challengeyoursoul.com/showproduct.php?productid=27) that he is a believer in prepared notes. Just imagine a person who we think are so used to giving public speech still relies on notes. So don't underestimate the usefulness of over-preparing yourself.
