A Message from Mrs. Jahida Sayyadi (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=1426)

by Jahida Sayyadi

I am not going to talk about my son’s detention in Guantanamo using this sort of sentimental vernacular that is expected from an agonised mother… Yes, the horrifying event has rendered me very emotional, strained and ragged by anxiety – for it is my beloved son whose destiny and life are in jeopardy. by Rupert Cornwell
“I guess maybe because his father's a lawyer - he's white, whatever." Jose Padilla was a devout Muslim, born on the wrong side of the tracks. White, middle-class John Walker Lindh shared his religion but little else. Rupert Cornwell examines their unequal treatment before the law

What the Asteriks Can’t Hide (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=1423)
by Joanne Mariner
Those who like word-guessing games might enjoy the opinion that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit handed down last week in the Moussaoui case. Its text is interrupted in several dozen places with sets of asterisks -- **** -- that substitute for classified information that has been excised. Unmentioned yet lurking in the background of the 4th Circuit's newly issued opinion are a couple of essential considerations.

Student Family Man or Financial Manipulator? (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=1407)
by Bob Fick
The FBI's 88-page analysis of the financial life of Sami Omar Al-Hussayen offers a picture of a typical, albeit well-off, graduate student with some odd bank transactions from 1997 through 2002. But what would be odd about a computer expert spending money on computers?

The important decision in the Jose Padilla and Yaser Esam Hamdi consolidate case is expected in July, 2004. If the Supreme Court gives the Bush-Cheney Gang a green light, then say good bye to our Republic. The police state, and the national nightmare of endless Pentagon detentions and endless presidential power, will be here!

by Madeleine Baran
To the Justice Department, Dhafir is a radical Muslim, suspected of giving money to terrorist organizations and deceiving the US government. To his community, Dhafir is a devoutly religious man who felt called to raise millions of dollars to assist the poor and starving in Iraq, a victim of the hysteria surrounding anything perceived to be related to terrorism.

The Guantanamo Camps: a Mistake Repeated (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=1387)
by Max Paul Friedman
Missing from the debate over the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba are the lessons of this country's only previous attempt to imprison foreign suspected subversives, captured overseas, in special camps beyond the reach of the courts. Last time, the targets were German immigrants taken from Latin America. As the Supreme Court joins the dispute, recalling the mistakes of the past provides insight into the present.

By Richard Phillipps
On April 8, Condoleezza Rice shamelessly declared that the Bush administration and its allies were “helping the people of Iraq and Afghanistan to build free societies...to spread the blessings of liberty and democracy as alternatives to instability and terror.” However, Washington’s version of “liberty and democracy” in Iraq is in reality a Nazi-style reign of terror aimed at suppressing all opposition to its illegal neocolonial occupation.

Accused Terrorists Face Different Kind of Justice (http://www.cageprisoners.com/articles.php?aid=1366)
By Toni Lucy
Of the 595 suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Begg is among six who have been designated for possible trial by military tribunal. A year after the Pentagon began releasing rules for the tribunals, a picture is emerging of a system in which the scales of justice are tipped against foreign terrorism suspects in favor of protecting national security.
