The best software I have found for antispyware is AVG. The program is awesome. It's very compatiable with various OS. Alot of people use spysweeper. It's been found that alot of errors come up with Windows Vista. Mcafee Security Suite not bad but very intrusive in that its hard to get off when you decide to uninstall. AVG, I feel, is far the best user friendly. The updates are current with the spyware that continues to develop. Feel free to ask anything else.

Hi Jake,
Would you agree with my theory that there is no off-the-shelf software that has not been cracked?

Hello Jake and welcome to the forums.
What anti virus software would you recommend? I am using Kaspersky Anti Virus right now.

AVG IS the best I have found for Antispyware. Some of the antispyware and antivirus programs are actually not doing anything except producing more virus or spyware on your system. They have developed a hook program with this software that makes it almost impossible to get out unless you continue using there software. If you try to uninstall it they have produced spyware that runs rapid through your OS which eventually will crash your system. Beware of the big name companies with this.

Jake, are you muslim? (It says 'Muslim Male' under your username, and you didn't give Salaam, so just wondering.)

Currently I'm converting. Have alot to learn thats why I'm on this site to try to learn and to do my part to help out the cause.I believe in every aspect of what I have learned so far. The strength of the Muslim people fascinates me in the drive and motivation they have on whats going on in the world. My family is from Russia myself have never been there but they totally believe of what I understand in Allah. I'm looking to follow those values and morals of my family. So I guess this warranted to you Abandoned-Mind I apologize for saying Muslim Male I need to say converting Muslim Male. I show no disrespect to the Muslim People.100% respect in what they do and values they possess and how they take care of there own.To the rest of the group my apologizes hope you accept and I'm here to help in anyway I can. Just let me know where I belong and may Allah bless you all.

Jake, no offence, but how experienced are you in field of computer security really?
AVG is a very fine antivirus, but like any antivirus it doesn’t offer much protection against spyware/adware threats. Spysweeper is a fine program for this, but I would personally recommend Spybot S&D and AdAware, which are also completely free while Spysweeper isn’t.
They have developed a hook program with this software that makes it almost impossible to get out unless you continue using there software. If you try to uninstall it they have produced spyware that runs rapid through your OS which eventually will crash your system. Beware of the big name companies with this.
Big reputable companies rarely attempt such things. But you will find some programs like the ones you described, they are nothing but malware themselves. Lately people have started using the word “extortionware” to describe them.

Jake, can you explain in very simple terms what Adware and Spyware is...

I use AVG, and also have Windows firewall on, is there any thing else i need to do to keep me secure from viruses and popups or any other rubbish. Thanks.

First off Morbius let me say thank you for your opinion on this. I have used Spybot S&D its a good program but for a program that scans constanly for new virus definitions AVG and I should say Avast are the best.In my opinion I downloaded spybot before and it came up with errors.Maybe I got a bad download but have not been to it since. Experience in IT security have quiet a bit and I also have alot of schooling in electronics.I have been doing IT work for almost five years and know the ends and out of the business but I will say this I don't know everything and still learning daily. Now on reputable companies that produce hook programs in there software you need to look real closely at this experienced first hand. Not going to mention companies but you need to really get your knowledge on this do some research on line in the IT security corner where they break down the write up of virus and antispyware programs.Spysweeper a good program but the compatiability with Windows Vista is unstable you receive errors at times. A firewall that helps with a bunch of virus and spyware stuff doesn't scan its an external firewall and that is Alpha Shield very reliable.Morbius I would watch was is free online there is nothing free in this world my friend. There is a catch to most things that may not be worth the consquence that is behind it.

Hi Jake,

I understand the you are converting to Islam, and you are living in USA, a society that is based upon that people has the free right to choose their religion.

Actually it is the civil rights in USA that makes it possible for you to convert to Islam.

When you convert to Islam, you also need to guaranty that you will never leave Islam again, and you have to sympathize with an ideology (Islam) that threat and kill people that wants to convert away from Islam.

In other words, you have to sympathize with killing, threading and out casting against people that do exactly what you are doing right now yourself, which is converting from one religion to another?

I wish you good luck, and I hope you know what you are doing.

Hi Jake,

How do you feel about the following tactics?

German "Terror" spyware plans trigger row (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6973018.stm)

German government plans to spy on terror suspects by deploying malicious e-mails have drawn sharp criticism. The e-mails would contain Trojans - software that secretly installs itself on suspects' computers, allowing agents to search the hard drives.

German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is quoted as saying the spyware would be used only in a few cases and for a limited time. The measure would form part of a new anti-terrorism bill.
<!-- E SF -->
A spokeswoman for the opposition Free Democrats, Gisela Piltz, called the proposal a totally unacceptable intrusion into privacy. But a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supported the measure.

According to German media reports, the malicious e-mails could appear to come from different official bodies.

Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries, of the Social Democrats (SPD), has voiced concern about the spyware plans, saying they might infringe privacy laws, the Deutsche Welle news website reports.

Jake Lewinsky, are you Jewish?

OK Jake, now I understand what the problem is – you still haven't made a distinction in your mind between viruses and spyware.
Spyware is a very large group of malicious tools, from completely harmless cookie tracking software that tells webmasters what sites you are visiting so they could offer advertising that you would be interested in, to highly dangerous keyloggers that make records of keys you press hoping to get your credit card details that way. Adware that doesn't ask for your permition to install and can't be uninstalled on user's demand is also classified as spyware.
Problem is that antivirus programs that stop your usual garden variety of worms and trojans will usually casually allow browser hijackers and other spyware to pass through, causing people a lot of problems. That's why specialized anti-spyware software is required. Spybot is one of the oldest and the best, but CWShredder, AdAware and others are also very good. Vista comes with integrated Windows Defender program for this purpose, and you can also download a free version for Windows XP (hated WGA check required). Windows Defender is actually renamed GIANT AntiSpyware tool that Microsoft acquired when it bought GIANT in 2004.

Umm,

Yes you are very right on this aspect in that anything can be cracked and whats sad about this Umm is the big name companies are getting targeted because they are big name companies. But on the other hand its good they get cracked sometimes because it makes companies not get lazy with the security aspect because everything is changing daily.

Aboo-Umar,

I personally like Avast antivirus but as you can see from responses everbody is titled to there own opinion. I have tested various software especially antivirus and antispyware on how they are written and the source code that is used on them. I personally like Avast for Antivirus and AVG for Antispyware.

I don’t know what your credentials are, but I’ve worked as a computer and network administrator for many years and I can tell based on my experience that you don’t seem very competent. Sorry, but a man who proposes antivirus for fighting spyware doesn’t inspire much trust.

As for your conversion, it’s none of my business. The matter is between you and God.
