As salaamu 'alaykum

There is a young revert brother from England , heading out to Damascus Syria hoping to learn Arabic.
He is on a good aqeeda , but only Allaah knows who he will meet there.
He has contact with one brother there , does anyone know of any Arabic institutes in the Damascus area ?

wa’alaikum as-salaam,

There’s the Arabic Language Centre ( http://www.arabicindamascus.edu.sy/English.html) which is part of the University of Damascus.

Perhaps he could stay within his community (in the UK), and learn Arabic through courses such as IbnJabal ( http://www.ibnjabal.com/), at-Tayyibun (http://www.tayyibun.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=55&Itemid=78) or local circles, insha’Allah.

They can often be just as productive as intensive courses abroad – depending on the dedication and hard work of the student.

JazakAllaahu Khayran for the link.

The online courses were shown to him , but he thinks learning a language is like swimming you cant just rely on text , and although you can learn the grammar ect , he wants the environment of an Arabic country where you learn and apply.

Damascus University does not even have a prayer room in the learning Arabic institute, some Muslims pray in a empty classroom. Classes are mixed and most are foreigners.

There is also Abu Nour, it has a Sufi-orientation. However many other people go there too, like Somalians who study there on the cheap. Its also the cheapest and can sleep there too. Each course level lasts 2 months, with a total of 6 levels. They do about 3 hours a day, 5 days a week.

The brother should have gone to Egypt, he may end up confused with all the Sufi type people there in Syria.

Walaikum Asalaam

Like one of the brothers said, why does he not try Egypt? As he seems adamant on leaving the country, If he needs help in Egypt then he can let me know insha Allaah.
