"I was married to someone well-respected in the community and never imagined that he would be violent or oppressive. He would do the Jumuah Khutbah (sermon) at universities about being a good Muslim... Thus began many months of physical beating and psychological intimidation."

I adhered to the principle of not exposing a fellow Muslim’s sin.
I feel many sisters apply this principle with their husbands, especially if they are a revert and cant tell their non muslim family whats going on.
JazakAllaahu Khayran for sharing this.

I was going to say something abt madkhalis too. but then when i thought about it i realised that its not only madkhalis it common in all sects of the muslims.
I think the sister should have exposed the ex-husband publically - let him be accounted so he stops his despicable two-faced behaviour towards the womenfolk of his house.
Another thing is that i have realised a lot of brothers prey on revert sisters. they try to mould them to their way of thinking so that they can use them for 'pleasure nikahs' and secret double marriages.

So true! I guess it's not just around my way that this hapens. You'll find modernists treating their wives a lot better than these fake Salafis.

That brother has to recognize he has a problem first and foremost.
I mean to slap your own mother across the face!!!!! To me that is shocking! This probably goes to show that he has been brought up with a very low regard for women and this attitude has been passed on by other male members of the family. So its not surprising that he would treat his wife in such a manner.

I'm sure he must have seen his father done this to his mother. What's shocking is that not only he hit her, but was proud of it and bragged about it. What can I say....there are all sorts of people out there.

jazakillahu khayran for sharing this. alhamdulilah she's better now. i know sisters that had problems (not as bad as this) but they couldn't talk about it or seek help because of "exposing his sin". what are sisters supposed to do in such cases?

Asalamu alaykum,
This case is horrible.
From a reliable source, a shaykh in Saudi, whom is quite well read, actually convinced my brother in law to burn his children and his wife as a form of chastisement, when they misbehave. My Brother in law did intially believe him, and implemented it on his family. Alhamdulilah he was convinced otherwise later on, but the children have major scars on them. This is really sad. These ulema and men of standing should be given a taste of their own medicine.

Not saying you are making it up, but that sounds a bit dodgy and hard to believe. Did you get the full facts?

"We have a daughter now and I will insha Allah do my best to ensure that she never marries someone like my ex-husband. I want her to marry a sincere Muslim. I feel that prospective spouses are not vetted sufficiently by the community for revert sisters, in the way that they would for their own daughters/sisters. I am keen for my daugher to know that Islam grants the wife many rights and the husband does not have the right to oppress his wife under any circumstances. Honor killings and wife battering have no place in Islam. I will end with a verse of Quraan that helped me through this bleak period in my life. Appropriately, it is from Surah Talaq (the Divorce).
"And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, and He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine." [At-Talaq; 2] "
alhamdulillah ,
its good to hear a happy ending in a muslims life, but u never know who is fully sincere in all aspects of their life not just the specific ibaadah but also in their relationships with others, this brother probably did more optional deeds then me, and with even more sincerety, but who would know the hidden characterisitics a person has within them until they are put triggered or put to test.
The brother was tested and the sister was tested too.
Everyone is tested in their deen, sometimes we dont realise what our test is, we may pray 5 times a day hoping to be sucessful and at the same time disobey our parents therefore becoming a failure.
