as-Salaamu alaikum.

Many who claim to be Muslim are calling to different sects, such as salafi, such as sufi, such as shia, so who are we to believe?

Are we to believe those who say: "Alhumdulillah, I am just a Muslim", when many who say this differ on many issues, so then which of them to believe?

Just follow the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah you might say. Well I would say: the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah according to who? I would say this because, again, people differ on many issues of interpretation and what is and isn't authentic.

Assalamu alaikum.

It is a condition of Shahada to have the knowledge of the testimonies (in the light of Quran 47:19). The knowledge of the three categories of tawheed******* (Rububiya, Uluhiya and Asma-us-Siffat) would help us a great deal, inshaAllah, to recognise the truth.

One will find that many of the sects do differ on the fundamentals of the religion. So, as long as the fundamentals are attended to, one will see the misguidance of many sects, inshaAllah. The fundamentals are based on the categories of Tawheed and the articles of Iman. One needs to study and understand these according to what was understood and practiced by the first three generations of Muslims.

It is not very difficult to see the misguidance of the astray sects, who emphasise on many minor aspects of the religion whilst not giving due attention to the fundamentals. Take the Sufism for example. Their thurst for love has generally led them not to worry about the punishment of Allah. Of course, we required to worship Allah with love, hope and fear in equal terms.

Allah knows best.
