So How did/are u dealing with the New Year greetings ?
What do u do when some one you see every day wishes u HNY? act surprised and not wish back ?
What if you are offered a greeting card ? Take it , but not thank or wish ?

One more thing, considering the discussion we had on this topic, "Is it even forbidden" because it is not representative of any religion/culture alone ?

Wa Alaykum As Salam
You can just reply: "I appreciate your sentiments but since this holiday is not part of my religion, I am afraid that I cannot return the greeting, thank you very much."

Wa 'alaykum usaalaam
The foreign muslims are into this big time especially the Egyptians , they are following the media hype of course , the ordinary people who live here just see it as a day off. I haven't come across anyone saying ''happy new year'' so far.
I dont think its a religious event , its just a number isn't it.

If you are not in the mood for a long discussion, just say, "Thank You," and then change the subject by asking, "So, what will you be doing today?"
This tactic has never failed me. Nobody will dare ask you: "Why do you not return my greeting."

Is it ok to say "same to you" instead of saying "Happy New Year to you too". I mean I'm only thinking rationally i.e. the time a Jew greeted the Prophet (saw) with death and he replied "same to you"?
Generally, I just stay silent and smile with the kuffar at work, at home and with relatives they don't bother greeting us anymore because they know it's not our thing no more!

That is when they greet you with the salams and does not apply to their religious or secular greetings. http://islamqa.com/index.php?ref=4975&ln=eng&txt=greeting
