Putting hats and symbols on vowels

How do I put hats on vowels? I know I should know by now...!
I'm assuming it's ALT something?

Dear brother Ibn Adam would be ideal here!

You can assign your own shortcuts to inserting Hats on Vowels in MS Word.

If you go to Insert > Symbol and select the symbol you wish to use...
Then click on the button “Shortcut Key” and there you can assign a command of your choice e.g. ALT+A for ā, ALT+E for ē and ALT+U for ū etc.
