As-salaamu `alaykum
An interesting statement from hafidh al-'Iraqi:
"The one who is recognised as a Muhaddith is the one who has written, read and retained ('ilm/ahadeeth), who has travelled to cities and villages, attained the usool and commented on the furoo' from the books of masanid, 'ilal and history, such that his books near a thousand. If that is so, then he is not denied from being called a muhaddith.
If however, there is a shawl over his head, sandals on his two feet, in constant company of a ruler from amongst the rulers, or he adorns himself with pearls and corals and colourful clothes, and he teaches hadeeth with slandar and lies and becomes a toy of shaytaan, not understanding what is read to him from juzz or diwaan, then such a person is called neither a muhaddith nor an insaan! In fact, his ignorance is such that he eats the haraam, and were he to declare it halaal, he would leave the religion of Islam."
