    Just thought I'd share this with all of you.

    I've purchase this book due to the immense wealth in Usul that it represents, and have begun looking more closely at the author and the book itself before it arrives.

    The book has been very useful to me in what little I've read from it and I hope to benefit from it a great deal more in the near future when I begin to study more in-depth Usul al-Fiqh.

    Books Covered in al-Bahr al-Muheet fil-Usul al-Fiqh by Badr ad-Deen Az-Zarkashee

    (745-794H/1344-1392M)He is Muhammad bin Bahādir bin Abd Allah az-Zarkashī, Abu Abd Allah, Badr ad-Dīn: Ālim in Shafiī Fiqh and Usūl, Turkish in origin, born and died in Egypt.

    He took Hadīth from al-Hāfith Maghlatā bin Qalīj. He took Recitation and Fiqh from al-Isnawī. He also heard from Imād ad-Dīn Ibn Kathīr.

    He intended to compile in his book on Usūl al-Fiqh principles according to 7 schools: Shafiī, Hanafī, Malikī, Hanbalī, Thahirī, and Shīah.

    He relied upon the following scholars and their respective books in Usuul from each school as follows:

    Shafiī

    Hanābilah

    At-Tamhīd by Abul-Khattāb, al-Wādhih by Ibn Aqīl, ar-Rawdhah by al-Maqdisī and its abridgement by at-Tūfī.

    Thāhirīyah

    Usūl al-Fatwā by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad bin Saīd ad-Dāwudī and al-Ahkām by Ibn Hazm.

    Mutazilah

    Al-Umdah and al-Mutamad by Abul-Husayn, al-Wādhih by Abu Yūsuf Abd as-Salām, an-Nukat by Ibn al-Āridh.

    Shīah

    Ath-Tharīah by Sharīf ar-Radhī, al-Musādar by Mahmūd bin Alī al-Himsī.

    Isn't it amazing the number of books on Usul that he relied upon in this?!

    I believe one of the epithets that Ibn Hajar gave him was al-Manhajee- can you see why?

    Salam alaikum Abu Najm,

    the book you mention is excellent - it is something of an encyclopedia in usool ul-fiqh.

    Showkani's irshaad al-fuhool is sometimes basically considered to be a shortened version of it.

    If you are planning to study usool in more detail - i only suggest that you study from a manageable source, and use bahr al-muheet as a reference book rather than as a book to learn from, as that is its role.

    May Allah increase you in Imaan and knowledge.

    I can see how one might think that I will be studying Usul al-Fiqh based only on this book- not the case at all. But what I find helpful is that al-Bahr is great in comparing the use of terms between the Mathaahib and as a reference, just as you mentioned.

    , I will study more closely Ibn Uthaymin's al-Usul min Ilm al-Usul, as it seems to be more of a primer on Fiqh terminology and its employment in the Hanbali school. Then I plan on translating one of the beginner Hanbali primers- I'm thinking Umdat al-Fiqh by Ibn Qudamah.

    I needed a kind of dictionary of Fiqh, and that is why I picked up al-Bahr really...

    Has anyone translated into english Ibn Qudamah's Umdat al-Fiqh that you know of?

    I would like to post some passages from al-Bahr al-Muhit from time to time...

    Here is one about the number of 'Usul that there are:

    Then they differed in the number of principles, thus the majority is upon that there are 4: the Book, the Sunnah, Ijma, and Qiyas.

    Ibn as-Samani said: Ash-Shafii indicated that principles are either textual or conceptual; thus the Book, Sunnah, and Ijma fall under textual, and Qiyas is conceptual.

    Still some added Reason, and made it the 5th principle. Abul-Abbas bin al-Qas said: The principles are 7: the Senses, Reason, the Book, the Sunnah, Ijma, Qiyas, and Language.'
    The correct position is: there are 4.

    And as for Reason: then it is not a proof that can obligate anything or prohibit anything. And indeed various matters are considered by means of it, then conclusions are reached, since (Reason) is an instrument of cognition; and as such the Senses are never a form of evidence since the perception of tangible things takes place by means of it (it is subjective).
    It is a paraphrase of the the words of az-Zarkashi...The Shaykh goes on to obliterate some of the other additional 3 principles tacked on in error.

    May Allah have mercy on az-Zarkashi...
