I take its not permissable to do either?
This is a discussion on Buying cats and dogs within the Fiqh and its Application forums, part of the Main Topics category; I take its not permissable to do either?...
I take its not permissable to do either?
Why is it not permissible?
the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said "The price (thaman) of the dog is filthy (khabith)." [Agreed Upon]
A narration in Muslim mentions the cat as well. However, this addition is weak according to Imam Ahmad (as cited by ibn Rajab in Jami' al-'Ulum wa'l-Hikam). It is the habit of Muslim to put the weakest narrations which contain some error in the chain or text at the end of the chapter, as he has done here, so it is likely that Imam Muslim did not consider that narration to be sahih but only cited to demonstrate how it differs with the authoritative narrations mentioned before it and because it corroborates the prohibition of selling the dog.
If i recall correctly, there is a narration in another book that specifies that it was the narrator Jabir (رضي الله عنه) who disapproved of the practice of buying/selling cats, not the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). However, other Companions permitted it as did most of the Salaf. Thus, it is the opinion of the majority that selling cats is permissible, or at worse, disliked. A small group of later scholars have acted on this addition in Sahih Muslim, deeming it impermissible.
I have a cat (although, not bought). Never heard it is impermissible. As for dogs, it is well-known to have a dog is disliked unless for necessity such as for a farm etc.

I used to have cats... they are the nicest animals to keep at home. before you know it they become a part of your family, who you actually miss when they're gone.
Unfortunately, I cannot have them any more since my wife is allergic to cats.Although, I wish I could have them again.

Yes, they are the nicest animals to keep at home indeed. I love our cat, cause she misses us and I miss her too when I keep away for a long time. Our cat we recieved as a kitten, and I had plans to name her hurayrahbut one particular member of the fam found it a too long name.. haha, so we gave her a 'dutch' name
