    Is this a weak Hadith?

    ÇáÓáÇã Úáíßã

While reading Fiqh us-Sunnah, I came across the following Hadith:

    Jâbir said:

“We set out on a journey, and one of us was wounded by a stone on his head. [When he slept,] he had a wet dream, and so he asked his companions, ‘Do you see any concession for me to perform tayammum?’ They replied: ‘We do not see any concession since you are able to use water.’ Upon that, he took bath and consequently died. When we came back to Allâh’s Messenger, he was informed of what took place. He said: ‘They killed him! May Allâh kill them! Why didn’t they ask if they didn’t know? Indeed the only cure for ignorance is to ask. It would have been enough for him to perform tayammum, or bandage his wound, wipe over the bandage and bathe the rest of his body.” This is related by Abu Dâwud, Ibn Majah, ad-Daraqutni, and Ibn as-Sakin, who said it is sahih.
Fiqh us-Sunnah, Volume 1, Book 4, Tayammum, The Dry Ablution, Fiqh 1.064B

Although it claimed that this Hadith is Sahih, however I came across another answer by Shaykh Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid on Islam QA, Fatwa 69796 who stated:

There are ahaadeeth which speak about wiping over splints, but they are all da’eef (weak), but that has been proven from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him).
So I ask: Is the above Hadith Sahih, or da'eef (weak)?

    Jazakullah Khair

A splint and a bandage are 2 different things brother...

    Shaykh al-Munaajjid says:

If it is covered with a dressing or bandage, then he should wash the healthy parts of the body, then he should wet his hand with water and wipe over the dressing. If he does this then he does not need to do tayammum.
This does not contradict the hadeeth:

...wipe over the bandage and bathe the rest of his body.
In fact the Shaykh is saying the exact same thing...

A splint is usually a removable solid object, made of wood, metal, or even cloth can be tied around the arm and neck to hold the arm in place- and splints are typically used to keep the part of the body immobile to foster healing. They are easily removed unless surgically attached, as in the case with screws, pins, and metal contraptions that have outer frames to support them.

However the splints in the time of the Prophet, peace upon him, were always removable unlike today, and so it is not permissible according to the Shaykh to wipe over a removable splint...

    Allah knows best...

    wa 'alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah.

The addition in the last part, "It would have been enough for him to perform tayammum, or bandage his wound, wipe over the bandage and bathe the rest of his body," is munkar.

Shaikh Sharaful Haq in Aunul Ma'bud (1/367-368) said that narration that join tayammum and bathing is only narrated by Zubair bin Khuraiq, who is not thiqah and contradicts other narrators that narrate from Ato' bin Abi Robah. Thus it can not be taken. (See Tamamul Minnah, 131)

Actually, I don't know if the Shaykh intended to say this or not, 'Astaghfiru Llaah.

It seems that splints can be wiped over depending on the circumstances- it is probably best to check with a Shaykh if you ever face this kind of situation, ÚæÐ ÈÇááå
