Al-Maghrib Institute Instructors ExposedAl-Maghrib Institute Instructors Exposed
This article proves the connection of the Al-Maghrib Institute (and Muslim Matters) with Wahhabism-Salafism and to very controversial individuals. Some information is derived from the Al-Sunnah Foundation of Canada though in this modified form I provide a detailed and comprehensive description of the subject.
Most additional information includes:
- A new section entitled “Profiles of Key Al-Maghrib Institute Instructors”
- A section on the Al-Maghrib Institute’s and Muslim Matters’ support of the late Wahhabi scholar, IBN JIBREEN, who openly supported Osama bin Laden
- A section on Yasir Qadhi’s support for ALI AL-TIMIMI who is currently serving a life sentence in a US prison
- Muslim Matters’ letter of support for ANWAR AL-AWLAKI (spiritual guide of NIDAL MALIK HASAN, murderer at Fort Hood) when he was released from prison in Yemen in 2007
- Al-Maghrib Institute’s connection with Nigerian UMAR FAROUK ABDULMUTALLAB(a.k.a. the “Underwear Bomber”) who tried to blow up a US-bound airplane on Christmas in 2009
Sayyid Yusuf ibn Sayyid Hashim al-Rifaie, a world renowned Islamic scholar, wrote the following about Saudi’s Madinah University:
UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH: THE WAHHABI UNIVERSITY OF FITNA“You built a university in al-Madina al-Munawwara and named it the Islamic University, near the Master of Prophets, peace and greetings be upon him. People and scholars then flocked to it with their cherished children and sons, rejoicing at the chance of drinking from this spring, thinking it would increase them in love and followership of their Beloved, peace and greetings be upon him, his dear Family, his Companions, and the Successors. But there you were teaching them how to deprecate him and all of them! You also had the students spy on and surveil one another so as to report to you the names and activities of those you named grave-lovers (al-quburiy-yun)! Namely, those who made frequent visits and salutations upon the Master of Messengers and the Mercy of Allah to the worlds so that you might wage war against them, ostracize them and expel them! You would only keep whoever became your client and obeyed you- for those alone are truthful and trusted according to you.”He then says:“Whoever graduated successfully at your hands, having drunk in the gamut of your beliefs, you sent back to their countries as your representatives to sound out your warnings and announce your glad tidings that their misguided fathers and way ward nations must renew their Islam. Such graduates you pampered with lavish salaries, opening offices for them, and every conceivable opportunity. As a result, dissensions and enmity flared up between them and the Ulema and pious Muslims of the generations of their fathers and past Shaykhs. Such graduates resemble the time bombs you manufactured and filled with all kinds of bad opinions of others and deep-seated contempt. This has transformed Muslim countries, especially Africa and Asia, into battle-fields of perpetual dissension among Muslims. This condition has even spread to the Muslim countries that gained their independence from Russia only recently, all the way to Muslim minorities and communities in Europe, America, Australia and elsewhere! To Allah is our complaint.”The following section notes the profiles of key Al-Maghrib Institute instructors who have mostly been educated in the corrupt, anti-Sunni, Wahhabi educational system described above. Such instructors are trained to tarnish, destroy, and humiliate the genuine Sunni heritage.
Note the Saudi-Wahhabi Madinah University connection to the Al-Maghrib Institute. Posing as true Sunnis, they are in reality spreading Wahhabism and brainwashing and polluting minds of younger aged Muslims on a grand scale. Brothers and sisters, be warned.
PROFILES OF KEY AL-MAGHRIB INSTITUTE INSTRUCTORS
(1) MUHAMMAD ALSHAREEF
“Muhammad Alshareef was born in 1975 and raised in Canada. In his youth, he memorized the Quran and later graduated with an Islamic Law degree from the ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH, class of 1999. He is the founder of AlMaghrib Institute through which he teaches university-level seminars on Islam. AlMaghrib Institute seminars have been conducted across the USA and Canada, as well as in Australia.
While he continues to teach, Muhammad Alshareef now devotes much of his time to recruiting, training and advising other students of knowledge in becoming AlMaghrib Institute instructors. Being a true visionary with exceptional talents in motivating others, Muhammad Alshareef …actively keeps in touch with the online community at theAlMaghrib Forums.”
[Blogger's note: Muhammad Alshareef's father, Helmy Alshareef, was detained for alleged connections to al-Qa'eda. An article states, "He met Ahmed Said Khadr, an Egyptian-born Canadian citizen who American authorities claim later became an Al Qaeda financier."
"Khadr — known in intelligence circles as "Al Kanadi," the Canadian — was killed in Pakistan last October and his second youngest son is still being held at the American base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba."
Muhammad AlShareef has made the above no secret. It was him who had posted the article on the AlMaghrib Forums under the subject "Dad Detained," which can be read at: ARTICLE: Dad Detained - AlMaghrib Forums
Whether Muhammad AlShareef's father is innocent or not is not the issue in this article. He was probably innocent and in the wrong place at the wrong time. The point is that Wahhabis-Salafis are known to have connections to many strange individuals. This is almost never the case with genuine Sunnis. ]
“Yaser Birjas is originally from the holy land of Palestine and was born in Kuwait. He graduated as class valedictorian with the highest honors from UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH’S COLLEGE OF SHARIAH (Fiqh and Usul) in 1996…After graduating from the University of Madinah, Yaser Birjas went on to work as a youth counselor…He is also an instructor at AlMaghrib Institute, an organization that provides trademark double-weekend seminars leading its students towards a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies…”
[Blogger's note: Yaser Birjas describes his association with hard-core Wahhabis in his own website: "He had the honor to interact and learn from a number of highly respected scholars such as Shaikh Ash-Shanqitee and Shaikh Al-Uthaimeen (rahimahumAllah)."
Shaikh Al-Uthaimeen is the late Wahhabi anthropomorphist who attributed a direction to Allah when he said: "Can the vision of Allah in the hereafter be other than in a direction?" Genuine Sunnis have never attributed a direction to Allah, as Imam Tahawi in his Al-`Aqeeda has made clear.
Furthermore, Yaser Birjas was temporarily detained by US Federal authorities in 2005 for strange reasons. This was announced by the al-Maghrib staff themselves in this message: IslamicAwakening.Com: Crisis in El Paso: May Allah Protect Shaykh Yaser Birjas
Again, this is not to say he was guilty of wrongdoing. But why do Wahhabis-Salafis always manage to have legal problems of one sort or the other?]
“AbdulBary Yahya was born in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and very soon thereafter immigrated to the U.S. with his family. He grew up in Seattle, WA and after completing his primary and secondary education there, began his studies at the ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH. It was at the University that he befriended Muhammad Alshareef, as they sat next to each other in the first year of their studies.Upon graduation from the Islamic University of Madinah’s College of Shariah, AbdulBary Yahya returned to Vietnam and Cambodia…He presently resides in Seattle, WA with his family, and is an instructor with AlMaghrib Institute…”
“Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at theISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences. Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah…Yasir Qadhi is currently pursuing his doctorate… At AlMaghrib Instiute he teaches the Light of Guidance and the Light Upon Light courses, which focus on aqeedah.”
[Blogger's note: Yasir Qadhi is recorded to have expressed Holocaust denial, though he has recently retracted his past statements. The Quilliam Foundation sheds light on Qadhi's bigoted views:"Yasir Qadhi, a Wahhabi graduate of the University of Medina who has denied the Holocaust, is also a regular presenter on the Islam Channel’s religious programmes. Qadhi has said that “Hitler never intended to mass-destroy the Jews”, calling conventional accounts of the Holocaust “false propaganda” and adding that Jewish depictions of Hitler were “not correct”. Qahdi later retracted this speech, sayinghe had referenced anti-Semitic books by “mistake” and adding that “I firmly believe that the Holocaust was one of the worst crimes against humanity that the 20th century has witnessed”. Qahdi has however also denounced Shia Islam as “the most lying sect of Islam” and said that “the Shias are allowed to lie and it is their religion to lie”."As if this is not enough, Yasir Qadhi had (has?) been placed on a terrorist watch list more than once:
(Source:Quilliam Alert: Islam Channel and the promotion of extremism)"Qadhi said he was detained for five hours, along with his wife and three small children, about four months ago when he drove back from Canada through Niagara Falls. He said he is routinely detained whenever he enters the country.Qadhi said his name is on a terrorist watch list."(Source: Houston Chronicle, 08/08/2006 - Available:Muslims vent frustrations at forum / They share tales of being detained at airports, other points of entry 08/08/2006 | Archives | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle)NCTC [National Counter-Terrorism Center] was established after 9/11 to help the U.S intelligence community connect the dots when it came to identifying Islamic radicals and terror plots. However, terrorism analyst Patrick Poole told CBN News that by working with Qadhi, the NCTC is failing in that mission.(Source: U.S. Enlists Dubious Aid in Anti-Terror Campaign - US - CBN News - Christian News 24-7 - CBN.com)
“In Yasir Qadhi’s case, he had already connected the dots for them. He was in a meeting in 2006 with a Homeland Security official saying ‘I’m on the terror watch list,’” Poole said.
As is typical, Wahhabis-Salafis almost always have tussles with the law for one reason or another. Sometimes we hear about it, other times we don’t.
This blog dissects Yasir Qadhi’s pseudo-Sunni drivel in detail and exposes him for who he really is.
Qadhi has accused great Sunni scholars, such Shaykh Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Malik, of polytheism (shirk).
Qadhi has slyly produced a contradictory position on Mawlid without many noticing.
Qadhi has accused the great and mesmerizing al-Burdah poem of shirk even though reputable scholars from the four schools of Sunni jurisprudence have accepted it as a beautiful and mesmerizing poem.
Qadhi has casted doubts and misgivings on followers of the Ash’ari creed as representatives of orthodox Sunni Islam.
Qadhi has openly praised controversial scholars who were refuted by Ahl al-Sunna wa’al Jama’ah (like Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Muhammad ibn Abdal-Wahhab, etc.).
Qadhi has called Shaykh Salman al-Oudah his “mentor” even though he considers it legitimate to kill civilians in Jerusalem.
Qadhi has said this of the late Wahhabi scholar Ibn Jibreen — an open supporter of Osama bin Laden –when he passed away: “Truly with the death of the Shaykh we have lost the last of the great giants of our era” (see below for more details).
This is only a sampling of Yasir Qadhi’s Wahhabi-Salafi propaganda that clashes with what the true Sunnis have understood and believed. And these are surely among the reasons why Yasir Qadhi was (or is) placed on a terrorist watch list.]
“…Mohammed Faqih completed a B.A. in Islamic Studies from the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America in Fairfax, VA, and graduated in Quran Memorization and Recitation from [King Abdul Aziz University in] JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA…and is an instructor with AlMaghrib Institute…”
[Blogger's note: The Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America (Fairfax, Virginia) was "[f]ounded in 1989″ and is ”affiliated with AL-IMAM MUHAMMAD IBN SAUD ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.”
And, again, problems with the law: “Federal agents” had at one time ”shut down and searched” this institute ”that is affiliated with a Saudi Arabian university and has been investigated by the Senate for links to terrorism.”

“…Shaykh Waleed Basyouni graduated with a Bachelors in Islamic Sciences from AL-IMAM MUHAMMAD UNIVERSITY (a university named after the founder of Wahabism, Ibn Abdul Wahab), Kingdom of Saudia Arabia; did his Masters in Islamic Theology, World Religions and Modern Religious Sects from Al-Imam Muhammad University…Shaykh Waleed is the latest addition to AlMaghrib Institute’s faculty of instructors…”
[Blogger's note: The profile of Waleed Basyouni in the Al-Maghrib Institute website states, "He studied under great scholars time such as Shaykh Ibn Baz, Abdul-Razzaq Afify and others."
The late Ibn Baz was the former grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia whose extremism, anthropomorphism, and bigotry are well documented. One of his strange fatawa was that the earth was flat and disk-shaped and that the sun revolved around the earth (!). This was stated in his al-Adillat al-Naqliyya wal-Hissiyya `ala Jarayn al-Shamsi wa-Sukuni al-Ard ("The Transmitted and Sensory Proofs of the Rotation of the Sun and Stillness of the Earth"). Another of his fatawa prohibited women from driving (!). One may read more of his bizarre "fatawa" and other aberrations as noted by Shaykh GF Haddad at:IBN BAZ
Waleed Basyouni also supported the late Wahhabi scholar named Ibn Jibreen who openly praised Osama bin Laden. If he hasn't had a tussle with the law yet, don't be surprised if he does. More details and links of this pseudo-Sunni drivel are provided below]
“Shaykh Shpendim Nadzaku has an intriguing name that roots back to an intriguing country reflecting his even more intriguing character. Born in 1973 to Albanian parents in the beautiful city of Ohrid Macedonia, his parents immigrated to America when he was just a year old. He was raised in New Jersey and soon took to the UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH where he graduated from the College of Shariah in 2001. He was contemporary to our other instructors from Madinah, Shaykhs Mohammad Alshareef and Yasir Qadhi.”
“Navaid Aziz is one of the latest additions to AlMaghrib’s instructor line-up as well as one of the youngest. From Montreal, Quebec, where he was born in 1981, he obtained a degree in Economics and Social Science from Champlain College. After that he went to the ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH where he spent three years attaining a diploma in Arabic before attaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Shari’ah. His main areas of interest include: Aqeedah, Hadeeth, Qawaa’id fiqhiyah and Maqaasid ash-Shari’ah. Sh Navaid plans to pursue his Master’s degree in either Arabic or Religious Studies.
Navaid Aziz has studied under many prominent scholars in Saudi Arabia including: Sh. Ahmad Rashid Ar-Ruhaily, Sh. Salih As-Sindhee, Sh. Salih Al-’Aqeel, Sh. Ahmad Al-Ghunaymaan, Sh. Mohammad Mukhtar Ash-Shinqueetee, Sh. Abdul-Muhsin Al-’Abbad. Sh. Abdur-Razzaq Al-’Abbad, just to name a few.”
“Shaykh Abdurrahman Al-Hejazy is one of the recent additions to the AlMaghrib Instructor family. Bringing a unique style of deliverance, Shaykh Abdurrahman has rocked the city he has resided in by establishing a weekly halaqa in his local Masjid attracting over 600 Muslims consistently.
Shaykh Abdurrahman comes from a Syrian family who originally migrated from Mecca. He was born and raised in RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA where, at the age of 19, memorised the Qur’aan and received an Ijazaah allowing him to teach his recitation of the Qur’an as authentically transmitted knowledge with a direct link to the Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him.
For 12 years, Shaykh Abdurrahman also sought knowledge from various renowned scholars from around the world including: Shaykh Ibn Baz, Shaykh Ibn Qu’ood, Shaykh Ibn Otheimeen, Shaykh Ibn Jabreen, Shaykh Ali Attantawi, Shaykh Mohammad Assabbagh, Shaykh Abdurrahman Albani, Shaykh Mohammad Arrawee, Shaykh Mohammad Saleh Almunajjed and many others.”
Ali Shehata ”is a student of Shaykh Muhammad S Adly.” (See his picture below)
(Picture: Muhammad S. Adly, teacher ofMuhammad S. Adly is a hardcore Wahhabi well known in the United States who studied in Egypt and SAUDI ARABIA. He was also once a representative of the Muslim World League which was made to spread the teachings of Wahhabism worldwide. Adly once had an online debate with the Sufi Shaykh Hisham Kabbani on whether Sufism was a part of Islam or not. The Islamic Supreme Council said:
Ali Shehata of the al-Maghrib Institute)“Shaykh Mohammad Adly, who once taught in the MASJID AL-HARAAM IN MECCA and now serves as Imam and Director of the Islamic Center and Masjid Al-Mumeneen in Columbia, South Carolina, dared Shaykh Kabbani in a broad Internet forum to prove that tasawwuf is part of mainstream Islam. For many, it was the first time they had ever heard of this aspect of religion, since discussions of Islamic spirituality—specifically Ihsan [excellence] and tasawwuf—were not tolerated by the dominant financiers of Islam in America.Shaykh Kabbani answered Shaykh Adly’s six questions on tasawwuf with full supporting evidence from the Qur`an, Hadith and authentic academic sources. When confronted with these proofs, Shaykh Adly was unable to respond and withdrew from the debate. Although the “debate” was over, the slanderous attacks continued up to this very day.”As is usual when a Wahhabi confronts a person of knowledge, Adly withdrew from the debate when he was put in an intellectual environment. The only environment Wahhabis can successfully function in is where Muslims — usually the youth — don’t know any better and follow them based on superficial, unintellectual, and ill informed reasons. It is for this reason that the Al-Maghrib Institute and Muslim Matters love to sustain a cheerleading mentality in their forums. This is the type of environment where Wahhabism can truly thrive. These are the places where the footsoldier mentality prevails and where Yasir Qadhi and his crew have the true possibility of being famous and liked. Similarly, when one reads the news of what is happening in Pakistan’s tribal areas, it is usually the ill informed youth who march behind the few militant leaders who brainwash them.
“Shaykh Ahsan Hanif hails from Birmingham, UK where he was born and raised. At the tender age of 13, he had already achieved one of his greatest milestones: committing the entire Qur’aan to memory. It was not surprising to learn that in the year 2000, he gained a scholarship to enter the ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY OF MADINAH. After completing his Arabic diploma, he graduated from the Faculty of Shari’ah in 2006 with honours. During his time in Madinah, he was fortunate enough to gain ijazah in the Qur’an as well as study under a number of well known scholars, such as Sh. Abdul Muhsin al-Abbad, Sh. Muhammad ibn Muhammad Mukhtar al-Shinqiti, Sh. Sulayman al-Ruhayli and many more.
He is currently one of the Imams and Khateebs of Green Lane Masjid. Powered as a DiscoverU LifeCoach, he is also pursuing his PhD at the University of Birmingham. Shaykh Ahsan is currently teaching a seminar expected to rock the AlMaghrib world and leave significant changes in people’s lives wherever it may land. Follow Shaykh Ahsan Hanif as he teaches Echoes of a Cave: Tafseer Surat AlKahf.”
“Imam Suhaib Webb was born and raised in the State of Oklahoma, USA. Suhaib William Webb accepted Islam at the age of twenty. He graduated with a degree in Education from the Central Oklahoma University and has studied Arabic and Islamic Sciences under many notable scholars.
Imam Suhaib is a dynamic and inspiring speaker and is a Lecturer at the Islamic American University (IAU) in California. He is currently studying Shariah at Al-Azhar University (Egypt) and is the author of the best selling audio CD album ‘Mothers of the Believers’.”
Suhaib Webb’s angry insults and opposition against Sunnipath.com, orthodox Sunni scholar Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller, the Ash’ari scholars’ understanding of creed, and the orthodox Sunni practice of istighaatha are well known. He once said: “I do not agree with Nuh Keller, his followers nor with what Sunnipath pushes as being mainstream.”No wonder the al-Maghrib Institute hired him. Sinking a sharp dagger into the heart of orthodox Sunni Islam will always earn someone a place in the al-Maghrib Institute.
Suhaib’s teacher, Shaykh Muhammad Hassan al-Dido, is a favorite of many Saudis who is known for his so-called “moderate Wahhabism.” He has successfully spread his version of Wahhabism in Mauritania, and is known to harbor critical thoughts against istighaatha — a practice accepted by orthodox Sunnis as legitimate. While he is more diplomatic, softer, and less rejectionist than most Wahhabis, his personal views clearly lean towards and favor the Wahhabi position. Whatever degree of Salafism he falls into, he certainly does not represent what the majority of Muslims have believed and are believing. One can only pity them for rejecting traditional Sunni Islam.

What does one see in the backgrounds and education of just about all of the instructors of Al-Maghrib Institute? One constantly reads the words “Islamic University of Madinah” and “Saudi Arabia.” The teachers who taught them are also well known Wahhabis. These educational institutions and teachers all have one important objective: promoting Wahhabism and destroying the unity and cohesion of the majority of the world’s (and history’s) Muslims who follow one of the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools); who follow the Ash’ari-Maturidi understanding of creed; and who espouse the Islamic science of Sufism.
The following section gives examples of very controversial individuals the al-Maghrib Institute is associated with. Being a Wahhabi institute, this should not be surprising. They are associated with the late Wahhabi scholar Ibn Jibreen who supported Osama bin Laden, Ali al-Timimi who is currently serving a life sentence in a US prison for being the “Virginia Jihad” spiritiual guide, Anwar Awlaki who was the spiritual guide of the murderer of the Fort Hood soldiers, and Farouk AbdalMutallib who was the “underwear bomber”. It is no wonder why the al-Maghrib Institute has had many confrontations with the law.
Virtues of Allamah Ibn Jibreen: Shaykh Waleed Basyouni | MuslimMatters.org
Ibn Jibreen is known for his infamous support of Terrorist #1, Osama bin Laden, which can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5TvlNECROM .
Yet, even when the evidence is crystal clear, Muslim Matters denies this:
Allamah Dr. Abdullah Bin AbdurRahman Bin (Ibn) Jibreen (RH) Passes Away | MuslimMatters.org
Ibn Jibreen fiercely defends Osama bin Laden and calls him a “mujahid in the path of Allah”(!). For this reason alone, sensible Muslims should’ve distanced themselves from him – and now from his lectures, books, and other material that still remain to pollute the minds of the Ummah.
Yet, Waleed Basyouni unabashedly praises a bin Laden supporter and even puts his own picture next to his (!). What’s even more disturbing is that the other staff at Muslim Matters did not have a problem with this. The al-Maghrib Institute, in fact, invited Ibn Jibreen as a guest to speak via live video at the 2003 Texas Dawah Conference.
Yasir Qadhi had this to say of Ibn Jibreen when he passed away:Truly with the death of the Shaykh we have lost the last of the great giants of our era…and Allah does not remove knowledge from the chests of men, but rather through the death of scholars. What use are Muslim Matters’ articles against terrorism when they openly praise a supporter of Osama bin Laden, the most notorious terrorist in the world? Why should Muslims and the law not be concerned?
I had the honor of meeting the Shaykh many times, in Madinah and in Riyadh (and even in his house) and even rode with him once from his house to a lecture he was delivering in Riyadh, asking questions along the way. I was blessed to attend an intensive seminar in Madinah in which he taught the ‘Four Principles of Shirk’, and it was that lesson with him that inspired me to translate the work into English and publish it.
Truly a humble man, a learned scholar, an ascetic, and a giant amongst scholars. May Allah grant him Paradise and bless us with scholars to take his place…

Dr. Ali al-Timimi’s Hearing: October 23rd, 2008 | MuslimMatters.org
Here are some words of support from Qadhi for al-Timimi:“I personally owe a lot to Sh. al-Timimi, and I can say (with pride) that fifteen years ago, back in the early 90’s, he played an instrumental role in shaping and directing me to take the path that has led me to where I am today. I had the opportunity to be of the first batches of his students – in fact he was the first teacher who taught me the realities and intricacies of tawhid and aqidah, which, to this day, remains my primary focus and speciality.”Of Ali al-Timimi, an article from Slate says:The influential Muslim scholar Ali al-Timimi was recently sentenced to life imprisonment. The punishment follows his conviction in April on charges of conspiracy, attempting to aid the Taliban, soliciting treason, soliciting others to wage war against the United States, and aiding and abetting the use of firearms and explosives.
(Source: Crossing the First Amendment line. - By Rod Smolla - Slate Magazine)MUSLIM MATTERS SUPPORTED ANWAR AWLAKI IN 2007Apparently Ali al-Timimi also had links with the Wahhabi Anwar al-Awlaki, deemed to be the spiritual adviser of Nidal Malik Hasan, the murderer of the Fort Hood soldiers.
An article states:
“Aulaqi returned to the U.S. for about 10 days in October 2002. Court records show that while he was here, he paid a visit to the Fairfax home of Ali al-Timimi, spiritual leader of a group of hardline young Salafi Muslims who gathered to hear him at Dar al Arqam, a small Islamic center a few miles from Dar al Hijrah. Timimi was convicted in 2005 of inciting his young Muslim followers to go to Afghanistan after 9/11 and to wage war against the United States. In fact, Muslim Matters was very happy in 2007 when they heard the news of Anwar Awlaki’s release from prison in Yemen. Muslim Matters devoted an article to express their support: Update! Imam Anwar al-Awlaki Released! | MuslimMatters.org
“At that meeting, Aulaqi attempted to get al Timimi to discuss issues related to the recruitment of young Muslims,” according to a pre-trial court filing by Timimi lawyer Edward MacMahon, who wrote that the “entreaties were rejected.” McMahon filed the motion to learn if government prosecutors had an undercover tape recording of the conversation.
“Aulaqi and Timimi shared similar religious views and had appeared together as speakers at Islamic conferences, including one in England in August 2001.
“Aulaqi had contact with two other members of the paintball group, court records show. Aulaqi was driven to Timimi’s home that day by Nabil Garbeih, a paintballer and Timimi follower who later testified as a government witness. Another paintball group member, Sabri Benkahla, convicted of perjury for lying about his attendance at jihad training camps, kept on his cell phone a number Aulaqi used abroad, according to FBI testimony at his trial.”
(Source:International Assessment and Strategy Center > Research > Who is the Imam Consulted by the Ft. Hood Assassin?)
Muslim Matters said this of Anwar Awlaki:“Alhamdulillah this is great news. I urge all the brothers and sisters to send a quick email to Imam Awlaki, telling him how happy we are that he has been released from his unlawful and undeserved imprisonment, back to his family and friends. May Allah protect our scholars and students of knowledge from the oppressors and the dictators of the world.”How’s that for moderation? They have distanced themselves from Awlaki now. But would they have distanced themselves from him had he not been put in the spotlight as a promoter of extremism, member of al-Qa’eda, etc.? Probably not.
YASIR QADHI TAUGHT THE “UNDERWEAR BOMBER”, UMAR FAROUK ABDULMUTALLAB, AT ILMFEST 2008
As if the above was not enough to prove the extremist Wahhabi connections of the Al-Maghrib Institute, the Nigerian Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, also known as the “Underwear Bomber” who tried to blow up a US-bound plane on Christmas in 2009, also attended Al-Maghrib Institute’s seminars in both the UK and United States.
Al-Maghrib Institute Instructor Waleed Basyouni (the Ibn Jibreen supporter) said:“Some of you may have heard that the terror suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab, attended IlmSummit 2008. AlMaghrib can now confirm that he was indeed an attendee. It deeply dismays us that even after receiving an mainstream Islamic education that Mr. Abdulmuttalab chose to follow this horrible path. We ask Allah subhanahu wa tala’ to protect us from all evil.”How bold of Waleed Basyouni to claim that AbdulMutallab received a “mainstream Islamic education” when Al-Maghrib Institute clearly and unequivocally teaches and promotes Wahhabism. Yasir Qadhi parroted similar nonsense, as reported by CNN:
(Source: Important message for AlMaghrib Institute's students - AlMaghrib Forums )“Qadhi said the institute taught young Muslims a “orthodox Islam for the 21st Century,” stressing the importance of the literal text of the Quran but imbuing those words with a modern meaning.”“Orthodox Islam for the 21st Century?” Wahhabism was never “orthodox” in any century and will never be. It was a splinter sect that appeared in Arabia in the 1700s and spread worldwide by Saudi petro-dollars in the 1900s. None of the pseudo-Sunni interpretations of Al-Maghrib Institute have ever been considered “orthodox” by the Islamic community. Rather, the Wahhabis have been repudiated by leading Sunni scholars time and again.
(Source:Terror suspect attended 2008 Islamic 'knowledge fest' in Houston - CNN.com )
While knowing very well that he teaches Wahhabism, Yasir Qadhi has the nerve to say this of the Underwear Bomber:“It’s ironic that he came to us.”Actually, it is not “ironic” at all. The Al-Maghrib Institute teaches an extreme version of Islam, even if they don’t teach terrorism. This extremist version was extreme enough to attract the Underwear Bomber, and this should be a matter of great concern.
And Yasir Qadhi was the teacher of the Underwear Bomber when he attended Ilmfest 2008 in Texas. CNN reports:“Suspect Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab attended some of the classes that Qadhi taught during the event, which ran from August 1 to 17, 2008.”Which controversial individuals and extremists have the Al-Maghrib Institute not been associated with? And why do they shout victim when they have problems with the law?
(Source:Terror suspect attended 2008 Islamic 'knowledge fest' in Houston - CNN.com )
Just as bizarre, in view of Qadhi’s dubious links, how come Qadhi “has been involved in de-radicalization efforts in the United States and was a leading participant in the U.S. Counter-Radicalization Strategy conference organized by the National Counterterrorism Center in the summer of 2008.” US strategists need to do their homework first or else risk having a radical advise them on de-radicalization efforts. But Qadhi did make it on the Homeland Security terrorist watch list — no surprise:
EXAMPLES OF HOW AL-MAGHRIB INSTITUTE CONTRADICTS SUNNI ISLAMThe following explains how Wahhabi Islam as taught by the al-Maghrib Institute differs from the orthodox Sunni understanding of the issues stated below:
(1) BID’AH HASANA: – A good innovation – Al-Maghrib teaches that this does not exist even though Sunnis have divided innovations into praiseworthy and blameworthy categories.
(2) MAWLID – Al-Maghrib Institute teaches that commemorating the birth of our beloved Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) is a blameworthy innovation that nobody should participate in. They say this without mentioning that the vast majority of Sunni scholars allow it.
(3) SHIRK – Accusations of Shirk (polytheism) are applied to the majority (Sunni) Ahl al-Sunnah scholars and individuals, constantly. They actually have to teach people not to call others Ahl-al Bid’ah and Ahl al-Shirk because it was getting so out-of-hand and obvious as to what they were doing in their classes. While they teach (now) not to declare it openly, they teach the students to believe it in their heart. Genuine Sunnis have been taught that accusations of shirk, kufr, and bid’ah against fellow Muslims are serious crimes.
(4) MADHAHIB – Al-Maghrib Institute says you don’t have to follow a Madhab (a school of Sunni jurisprudence: Hanafi, Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali), in contradiction to the understanding of most Muslims in Islam’s history. Al-Maghrib Institute filters the Madhabs for you and gives you the “Quran and Sunnah” for any fiqh question even when proper scholarship is required to understand the two noble Islamic Sources.
(5) `AQEEDAH – On matters of Islamic creed, Al-Maghrib Institute teaches Muhammad ibn Abdal-Wahhab’s “Kitab al-Tawheed” that is replete with anti-Sunni interpretations and understanding. The Ash’ari and Maturidi understanding of aqeedah that Islam’s vast majority follow — and are represented as those who are of Ahl al-Sunna wa’al Jama’ah — are marginalized and sidelined as being unrepresentative of the truth.
(6) HISTORY – Al-Maghrib Institute uses names of traditional Sunni scholars like Imams Abu Hanifah, Shafi’i, etc., cherry-picks from their statements, and attempts to support the Wahhab perspective. This is deception of the masses and abusing the words of our illustrious `ulema. Please see “Salafi Tampering” links on the right side of this blog for specific examples of distortion of Islamic sources. In reality, the Wahhabi understanding contradicts the historical understanding of many issues of fiqh and ‘ibadaat that genuine Sunni scholars held through the generations. This means Wahhabis attribute ignorance to our pious forefathers and those who followed them.
(7) PERSONALITIES/SCHOLARS - They emphasize Ibn Taymiyya, Muhammad ibn Abdal- Wahhab, Bilal Phillips, and other pseudo-Sunni scholars who have been refuted time and again by the orthodox Sunni community. Traditional scholars are ignored, accused of reprehensible innovation and polytheism, and are used only selectively and deceptively to support the Wahhabi perspective.
CONCLUSIONI believe that the long-term harm will far outweigh the benefits of allowing the Al-Maghrib Institute to operate in ‘Western’ societies where Muslim youth crave spirituality in the materialistic surroundings they find themselves in.
The youth are our future leaders — the future leaders of Islam, the future leaders of our Ummah — who deserve to be exposed to the moderate, mainstream Sunni Islam that most followers in Islam’s history have been following. Many of these youth in ‘Western’ societies do not have a choice because usually the Salafi-Wahhabi version of Islam is what they find most in the mosques they attend and in the books they read.
Needless to say, if the current youth who are inculcated with extremist, bi-polar, and anti-Sunni understandings of Islam that find a lot in common with the militants we so often hear about, become future leaders of the Muslim community, it will have an even more destructive effect on Muslim unity and cohesion. Tolerance and patience will continue to be replaced with intolerance and accusations of shirk, bid’ah, andkufr. Soft discussions will be replaced with shouting, angry finger pointing, and fighting in the mosques, Islamic schools, and universities. And the enemies of Islam will continue to take advantage of this deviated minority to further tarnish the great, peaceful image of Islam.
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him abundantly and grant him peace) had warned us of such bigoted followers in our Ummah who would increase in number over time. Indeed, knowledge is taken away by the death of genuine scholars. The deviated minority then takes the pulpit and unleashes a campaign of misguidance and confusion that our youth become exposed to and follow. To a Muslim, these are indeed signs that the Day of Judgement is close.
While I, as well as other Sunnis, continue to counter Wahhabi-Salafi ignorance in our Ummah as much as possible, it is inevitable that such pseudo-Sunni followers will continue to increase over time.
May Allah Guide all of us, and especially our youth, on Sirat al-Mustaqeem, and keep us on a path of love, moderation, and unity that the innovaters are trying so hard to destroy. Aaameen.

Too many words for me. Who wrote this i thought the us love yq?
.ISLAM ANY OTHER WAY IS MAKE BELIEVE
Al Magrib is a very dangerous institute that is becoming very famous and gaining lots of support. They are stuanch wahabies yet they disguise themselves as “Ahlul sunnah wal Jammah”. Yet they will continue to make progress with the muslim youth and thus continue to take them away from ahlul sunnah wal jammah. We need to give support to Sunni organisations, Seekeres Guidance, Sunnipath…….we need more organisation, more opportunities for our younger generations as we dont have enough about us and because of this institutions such as Al Magrib are taking control.

I wonder if we were to list all the sufi/deobandi/ashari/maturidi ulemah who live in Makkah/medina and studied and taught there as well as The wahaabis in Azhar etc would make everyone a terrorist"Sit with one whose limbs address you, not his mouth." Sahl ibn `Abd Allah ibn Yunus, Abu Muhammad al-Tustari (d. 283), may Allah be well-pleased with him.

I find the term "spiritual guide" so ambiguous and a bit rediculous. Christians never know what to say about Muslims because they can only ever view us in their terms. pathetic. think outside the box guys! Maybe they dont wanna cause then theyd actually become a muslim themselves.“Three classes of men are cut off from the blessings of Paradise: Oppressors; those who aid and abet oppression; and those who tolerate oppression.” Ali (ra)

I was skimming through the article and actually thought it was some article by some kafir right wing nutjob, then i see comments about sufis, then again what is the differences, neo com sufis and all..."I am a traveler seeking the Truth, a human searching for the meaning of humanity, and a citizen seeking dignity, freedom, stability and welfare under the shade of Islam. I am a free man who is aware of the purpose of his existence and calls, truly, my prayer and my sacrifice, my life and my death, are all for Allah, the Cherisher of the worlds; He has no partner. This I am commanded and I am among those who submit to His Will. This is who I am. Who are you?" - Hasan Al-Banna
