EXCLUSIVE: UMM AYMAN BINT JENVEY - daughter of Glen Jenvey gives exclusive interview to Sawtul Islam’s Umm Ismail, and explain’s why she embraced Islam, the difficulties she faced and why her father is obsessed with Radical Islam.
Umm Ismail: Assalamu ‘alaikum Sister Umm Ayman, and may I begin by thanking you for giving us this insight to how you embraced Islam and giving us an insight into your father’s obsession with ‘Radical’ Islam’, first of all, tell us a little about your background
Umm Ayman Bint Jenvey: Walikum Salam, Indeed it is a pleasure to speak you.
Umm Ismail: Tell us a little on how you embraced Islam and why
Umm Ayman Bint Jenvey: Alhumdulilah all praise is due to Allah, It is funny you should ask me this, as a lot of it has to do with my father really, I was born to hindu parents, Glen my father converted to Christianity much later on, My mother left us when we were young as she had caught my father in bed with another man ( a white man ) , which as you can imagine was quite a shock, but I was too young at the time, I only learned of this much later when I was 14. At that point I had felt an utter disgust at knowing that I had a father who was a homosexual, although I was bought up as a liberal, freedom loving teenager I knew from my fitra that this was a sick disease, and an un-natural one at that to say the least. It didn’t surprise me though, as I had always seen him smile whenever the postman would deliver something or the milkman would make a delivery, he would make extra effort to dress up and try to impress them, I think really he was searching for someone to love him but was not sure himself where and whom or what to find it in.
Growing up in Wiltshire in It was not very suburban like London and was very country like- this gave me time to reflect upon god’s creation and think about man life and universe, it didn’t take me long before I began to reflect more and more and question who created all of this? Where did all this come from? But more than that I was dumbfounded into how man could live his life without any guidance and instruction on how to conduct life’s affairs, I knew their was beauty and a system of governance after reading the Quran, so I embraced Islam.
Umm Ismail: Mashallah, and now you are a part of 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. I must ask, how did your father react?
Umm Ayman Bint Jenvey: I thought he would be more understanding as he had himself converted to Christianity after dating a Vicar at the local church – I know you must be thinking, what an individual – but that was always the way he was, except by the time I was 16 he was more open about his homosexuality. Anyway, so yes, I thought he would not have a problem with my conversion because he was someone who revered white middle class people and converted just to fit in, his inferiority complex led him to convert, so why not me? I mean I too had this complex and believed Muslims were always superior because of the foundations of their creed so what’s wrong with embracing something you admire ?
I began to listen to lectures by Sheikh Abu Hamza and Sheikh Faisal and it was that point he really began to show his hate, but this only increased my imaan, I knew with all the shouting at home that I had to get away quickly, so marriage was the next step, I wanted to wait, but by then, My father had struck a relationship with someone called Dominic Whiteman, he moved in and they began an affair although my father was still in a relationship with the Vicar.
At that point I married my Husband Abu Ayman and we moved to Finsbury park in London and joined many Islamic movements working for the worldwide establishment of a pan Islamic State. My father tried to contact me and eventually did, I said I didn’t want anything to do with him as he was a homosexual and an enemy of my belief, he claimed I had been brainwashed and it was the radicals fault, and this led to his online obsession, from there I lost contact with him up until 2001 after which I knew he set up the website www.thekafir.co.uk and carried on from there.
All his lies that he was hired by government’ s to spy on tamil tigers and islamist’s is complete rubbish, it’s always been about him and his own agenda to take his anger out on the the so called radical’s that apparently brainwashed me, when it was my creator who guided me and none can guide except him.
Alhumdulilah I am glad I have no contact with him, I am happy with my husband and 5 children, and inshallah I aim to make them Muslim’s who will serve this deen Inshallah.
Umm Ismail: Mashallah Wow! What can I say, that is some journey! What would you say about the typical stereotyping that in Islam women are oppressed via the Hijab etc?
Umm Ayman Bint Jenvey: The Quran itself, which is the word of Allah, contains many verses commanding men to be kind to their wives and stressing the rights of women.
Islam gives the right set of rules, because they are NOT made by men, but made by Allah; hence it is a perfect religion.
Quite often Muslim women are asked why they are covered from head to toe, and are told that this is oppression–it is not. In Islam, marriage is an important part of life, the making of the society. Therefore, a woman should not go around showing herself to everybody, only for her husband. Even the man is not allowed to show certain parts of his body to none but his wife. In addition, Allah has commanded Muslim women to cover themselves for their modesty:
“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their Jilbaabs (outer garments) over their bodies (when outdoors). That is most convenient that they could be known as such (i.e. decent and chaste) and not molested.” (Quran 33:59)
If we look around at any other society, we find that in the majority of cases women are attacked and molested because of how they are dressed.
Another point I’d like to comment on is that the rules and regulation laid down in Islam by Allah (God) do not apply just to women but to men also. There is no intermingling and free-running between men and women for the benefit of both. Whatever Allah commands is right, wholesome, pure and beneficial to mankind; there is no doubt about that. A verse in the Quran explains this concept clearly:
“Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and protect their private parts (from indecency, illegal sexual acts). That will make for greater purity for them. And Allah is well aware of what they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and protect their privaate parts (from indecency, illegal sexual intercourse). That they should not display their beauty and ornaments except that which is apparent thereof …” (Quran, surah “Al-Nur” 24:31)
When I put on my hijaab (veil), I was really happy to do it. In fact, I really want to do it. When I put on the hijaab, I felt a great sense of satisfaction and happiness. Satisfied that I had obeyed Allah’s command. And happy with the good and blessings that come with it. I have felt secure and protected. In fact people respect me more for it. I could really see the difference in behaviour towards me.
Finally, I’d like to say that I had accepted Islam not blindly, or under any compulsion. In the Quran itself there is a verse which says “there is no compulsion in religion” . I accepted Islam with conviction. I have seen, been there, done that, and seen both sides of the story. I know and have experienced what the other side is like, and I know that I have done the right thing.
Islam does not oppress women, but rather Islam liberates them and gives them the respect they deserve. Islam is the religion Allah has chosen for the whole of mankind. Those who accept it are truly liberated from the chains and shackles of mankind whose ruling and legislating necessitates nothing but the oppression of one group by another and the exploitation and oppression of one sex by the other. This is not the case of Islam which truly liberated women and gave them an individuality not given by any other authority.
Inshallah Islam will reign supreme in Britain and worldwide over.
Umm Ismail: Jazakallah Khairoun for this exclusive interview
