19-Year-Old Man Faces Aggravated Rape Charges


WARNING: This story is about sexual abuse of a child and the details are disturbing.

Police sources say this began when a three-year-old girl came down with a case of gonorrhea. She got that, we're told, after being sexually assaulted by a 9-year-old boy. However, it doesn't stop there. West Baton Rouge detectives say the boy was being assaulted by a 19-year-old man. WAFB's Avery Davidson reports.

19-year-old Stedman Varise is facing two charges of aggravated rape. The crime carries a mandatory life sentence if he is convicted. Sheriff Mike Cazes says Varise admitted that in 2005, he started sexually assaulting a seven-year-old boy. The boy is now nine. Sheriff Cazes says, "It looks like every day when you wake up, you never know what else is going to happen in a small community like West Baton Rouge."

Cazes says this latest case marks the third abuse case his detectives have investigated in the past month. In late June, Addis police arrested Shaelsie Jason and her boyfriend, Jeremy Jordan. They're accused of beating a 16-month-old child to death. In the second case, 29-year-old Doinell Perkins was arrested earlier this month. Detectives say he put a two-year-old girl in scalding hot water, which caused second and third degree burns over almost half her body.

Sheriff Cazes says, "I just don't know what the world is coming to because every day it looks like something else is going to unfold that we would have never dreamed would happen in the area of the town that it's happening, I mean, rural Erwinville? I mean, it's just something that we would have never dreamed of."

Sheriff Cazes says the 19-year-old admits to last molesting the boy on the Fourth of July while he was supposed to be babysitting him. He also allegedly assaulted the boy at the boy's grandmother's house in Baton Rouge. 9NEWS is told both children are in the custody of the state.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- "It was pretty bizarre," said neighbor Ramon Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was one of the first to discover 34-year-old Angelo Mendoza on April 28 after police said Mendoza bit an eyeball out of his 4-year-old son's face and ate it.

"The guy was crazy. Real bug-eyed; he had to be on drugs," said Rodriguez.

Court documents said neighbors checked on Mendoza's son, Angelo Jr., after they noticed the father acting nervously and fleeing from his east Bakersfield apartment in his wheelchair. Inside, they found little Angelo naked and bleeding. Police said the boy had numerous bites to his hands and his eyes were swollen shut. Doctors said the boy's left eye and muscle were completely missing. His other eye was mutilated beyond repair. The boy told them, "My daddy ate my eyes out." Rodriguez said meanwhile Mendoza approached him at a neighbor's vacant house down the street.

Rodriguez said the boy's father wheeled himself into the front yard and asked Rodriguez to play with him and a pet dog. He was wearing boxers and a sweater. When Rodriguez refused, Mendoza got off his wheelchair and dragged himself into a back yard, where he found an ax.

By then Mendoza had stripped naked. He chained himself to a tree in the back yard and began hacking at his leg with a pickax while yelling incoherently.

"He told me to look into the sun and pray with him. I was kinda scared for a minute," said Rodriguez.

Then Rodriguez jumped on Mendoza and wrestled the ax away.

"As soon as I grabbed the ax he tried to bite me, and I had to hold him down with my knee. There was dry blood around his mouth. I don't know if it was his own, but I'm pretty sure it was his son's now that I hear the story," said Rodriguez.

The police report said Mendoza appeared to be under the influence of PCP. Rodriguez said had he known about little Angelo, the outcome would have been different.

"I would've just let him cut his leg off. What happened to his son is not right. I would've left him alone," said Rodriguez.

Mendoza was arrested on charges of torture, aggravated mayhem, and cruelty to a child. The toddler is now in the custody of Child Protective Services. Mendoza is due in court May 20. His bail is set at $1 million.

BOULDER, Colo. -- The 18-year-old Broomfield man accused in the slaying of a 13-year-old girl admitted to several friends that he killed her, according to evidence laid out in a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Boulder.

Alexander Paul Pacheco is charged with first-degree murder in the October 2008 slaying of Kelsey Shannon. Her badly decomposed remains were found in a Broomfield drainage ditch last January.

An autopsy determined that Kelsey died as a result of "homicidal violence."
According to testimony in Pacheco's preliminary hearing, he told a friend he strangled Shannon "until her eyes rolled back in her head." He then stabbed her in the throat multiple times to make sure she was dead.

Also revealed in court Wednesday: Pacheco admitted to a friend that he had sex with the corpse afterward until the body turned cold. He faces an additional charge of abuse of a corpse, based on that admission.

A friend of Pacheco told police that Pacheco took him to the area where he had dumped the body and said he wanted to retrieve a condom that he used after killing Kelsey. The friend told police that Pacheco also showed a lock of hair he kept in a tissue that he said belonged to Kelsey.

Pacheco visited the body several times in a watery marsh, according to police. Pacheco may have tried moving it with a sled to better hide it and also debated putting in a barrel filled with soda and bleach in the hopes it would eat away at the body. He said he could smash the teeth and spread them over Colorado so police couldn't identify the remains through dental records.

Additional testimony revealed that Pacheco and Kelsey were a couple and that the two had sex during the relationship. On Oct. 14, Kelsey told her parents that she was going to go for a walk, after she and her parents had a disagreement about Kelsey's relationship with Pacheco. She never returned home and was reported as a runaway.

Pacheco also told friends he wouldn't get caught because she had written a "runaway" note.

The preliminary hearing is the first time evidence against Pacheco has been revealed. District Judge John E. Popovich will decide if there is enough evidence for Pacheco to stand trial.

Pacheco has been held without bond since his arrest three days after Kelsey's body was discovered.

In the media today the west is used as the yard stick for what a society should be and everything that happens in Muslim countries are expose and reported to show how horrible Muslims are. It has gotten so bad that the Muslims believe this also and wish that the Muslim societies were more like the west.

Well seeing that gay marriage is almost legal throughout america, what can these people come to expect? Millions die every year due to alcohol related deaths yet they still don't think to ban alcohol then turn around and wonder why so many alcoholics. They have so many unwanted pregnancies, std's, etc; yet fornication and adultery is not only allowed but glorified. When things like these happen, I find it amazing that people here are shocked. Its only going to get worse and as each year goes on more questions will be raised, yet the answers are right in front of them but Allah has made them dead, dumb, and blind.

By the way, lack of education is the main reason for the negative effects you mention. Why do you think that the so-called "red" states in the US, where they practiced wows of abstinence and had no sex-ed in school were also the states in which there were more STD's and teen pregnancies than other (blue) states? Lack of education.

And where did you get the idea that adultery is glorified? Watch too many soap operas and too little documentary?
