GAZA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of the Jihadi Salafi, a radical Sunnite group, announced Friday that his group is seeking to establish an Islamic emirate in the Gaza Strip.

Sheikh Abelatif Musa, better known as Abu Noor al-Maqdisi, the group's spiritual leader, slammed the Islamic Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, for not implementing the Sharia (Islamic law) in the territory.

Musa announced during Friday prayer at one of the mosques in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah that his group is exerting efforts to reinforce the rules of Sharia in the Gaza Strip.

He was referring to the establishment of an "Islamic emirate" in the impoverished besieged enclave, seized by Hamas in June 2007after its militants routed moderate President Mahmoud Abbas' security forces.

Musa told the prayers that his group "will establish the Islamic emirate in the borders of the Gaza Strip, even on the expense of our bodies and souls," adding "this state will have itsown Islamic courts and will bring the taste of life to the territory."

During the speech, members of the group delivered a small booklet that includes the doctrine of the group, which is similar to the one of the world's banned al-Qaida organization headed by Osama bin Laden.

Early on Friday morning, Hamas police and security forces erected checkpoints outside Rafah in southern Gaza Strip to prevent more supporters of the group from arriving to listen Musa's speech.

Musa said "their (Hamas') threats not to make the speech in the mosque won't scare us," as dozens of his masked militants holding rifles surrounded the mosque.

"I call on al-Qassam Brigades militants to join us and I warn Hamas and its government that if they don't implement the Sharia, they will turn into a weak Islamic party," said Musa.

Armed al-Qaeda supporters have gathered outside a Rafah mosque following reports that Hamas is expected to raid the site.

Hamas was reportedly attempting to prevent a leading Salafi leader in the Strip from delivering a sermon claiming that Gaza is an Islamic emirate and charging that Hamas members are not sufficiently religious. (Ali Waked)

Five killed in Gaza gunfight between Hamas, pro-al-Qaeda group

Rafah, Gaza Strip - A fierce gunfight between Hamas police and a pro-al-Qaeda group in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah left five people dead and 20 wounded Friday afternoon, medical officials at the town's al-Najr hospital said.

The clash began after Dr Abdel Latif Moussa, the leader of the pro-al-Aqeda Jihad Salafi group, announced at Friday prayers at a Rafah mosque that his group had declared a theocratic Islamic emirate in the Gaza Strip.

Dozens of group members, masked and brandishing AK-47 assault rifles, took up position outside the mosque and after the prayers had ended, exchanged fire with members of the police force of the Islamic Hamas movement which administers the Gaza Strip.

Witnesses said they heard 'intensive' gunfire and explosions around the Ibn Tahmeh mosque.

Doctors at al-Najr hospital said three of the injured were in serious condition. Two of the dead were members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, the armed wing of the secular Fatah movement, who had come to help the Hamas police root out the pro-al-Qaeda group. The other three fatalities belonged to the Jihad Salafi.

Moussa was believed still holed up in the mosque, which was surrounded by Hamas police. His associates have threatened to take bloody revenge on Hamas if he is harmed.
