famous or not so famous Quotes
This thread is dedicated to famous or not so famous sayings of the ulema, that you realy liked. I will give you a start.
Ok lets start with a scary one
al-Haafith ath-Thahabi, rahimahullah, says: “Is seeking knowledge better than voluntary prayers, recitation of the Quraan and rememberance of Allah?
“Whoever is sincere to Allah in his search for knowledge, and his mind is astute, then knowledge is better for him, with some aspects of prayer and worship, for if you see him serious in knowledge yet has no share in (acts) that bring one closer to Allah, then this (one) is lazy, careless, and is not truthful in his intention.
“As for the ones who seek hadeeth, fiqh, due to personal whim and selfishness, than worship for this person is better, and this is a general categorisation, for few, by Allah, are those that I have seen sincere in their search for knowledge.” [Siyar A’laam an-Nubalaa`, 7/167]
Ponder over this next one ya salifiyoon
"I entered upon al-Ma`moon, and he said: 'How have you awoken, O Nidr?' So I replied: 'In goodness, O Ameer al-Mu`mineen' He asked: 'What is irjaa`?' I replied: 'A religion that agrees with the Kings, they gain from the dunya with it, and lose their religion from it'. So he said: 'You have spoken the truth'" [al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah of al-Haafith Ibn Katheer, 10/276]
for all you "unity at any cost" brothers and sisters out there
Ibn Hazm, rahimahullah said: “And know, may Allah have mercy upon you, that Allah has not allowed good to stream from the hands of the groups of misguidance, nor were any land of kufr conquered, nor was the flag of Islaam raised. And they remain in the midst of the lands of the Muslims, splitting the unity of the believers, directing their swords against the people of the religion, and treading the land committing corruption. As for the Khawaarij and Shee’ah, then their role in what has been described is more than well known, and the Baatiniyyah did not have the ability to plot against Islaam, and to expel its weak members to kufr except by the tongues of the Shee’ah. And as for the Murji`ah, then likewise…and the Mu’tazilah tread in that path as well, so Allah Allah O Muslims, preserve your religion!” [al-Fisal, 4/277]
no need to coment on this one
Shaykh Naasir al-Fahd, fakkallahu asrah said:"I have pondered upon the history of Islaam for long, turned its pages, and looked at the status of the enemies of Islaam, and their wars against it; Crusaders, Idolaters, in the East, West, for more than ten centuries, and I do not find an enemy more evil, more malicious and more barbaric than "America". [From his introduction to at-Tankeel]

Barakallahu fik for this excellent thread brother Abu Faaris As-Sumalee!
I have seen a great amount of quotes I love to take note off, but many times forget them or can't refer back to them having lost knowledge of the exact source. Good - nay wonderful - idea to have a thread about this, so we can refer back to it.
I hope many will add from time to time a great, famous or remarkeble saying of a scholar (classical or modern one) with reference.
One I love or like very much is al-Hafidh al-Dhahabi's famous saying about Shaykh al-Islam's level of the Hadith science:
"A Hadith unknown to Ibn Taymiyyah is no Hadith" (reference comes later)
Another famous saying is of the Noble Companion 'Ali b. Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, which reads:
"Truth is not known by men, but men are known by the Truth" (so many references, I remember it from al-Albani's booklet about the Qissat al-Gharâniq in a footnote)
Please, add a good saying of a scholars. Its a great idea!
SunniPress
From Imam al-Shafi'i is also narrated:
"People did not become ignorant nor differed except after their abandonment of the Arabic language and their inclination to the language of Aristoteles!"

The following comment by al-Dhahabi about Ibn Taymiyya has no match:
"If I were to take an oath between the Rukn (Hajar Aswad) and the Maqam (of Ibrahim, next to the ka'ba), that neither have I seen anyone like Ibn Taymiyya, nor has he seen anyone like himself, I would not be breaking my oath!"
Now... this is a statement-and-a-half!

The saying of Imaam Malik
“Everyone’s speech can be accepted or rejected, except the speech of he who occupies that grave.” (Reported by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and Ibn Hazm. Also in Al-Yawaqeet wa Al-Jawahir 2:96.)

Ar-Radd al-Waafir, pg. 35. The edition of Ar-Radd al-Waafir under this section is also the first edition but its year of print is 1393H.
lets keep the references because i can just see the "abu hanifa is the light of the world ....." coming
....ok since we are on the ibn taymiah mood, let me pull out another one
Ibn al-Qayyim says of Ibn Taymiyyah's remembrance of his Lord:
"I heard Shaykul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah Azza Wa Jall sanctify his soul, say, 'Remembrance to the heart is like water to fish. What will be the state of the fish if it becomes seperated from the water?...I once attended fajr prayer with Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, he then sat and remembered Allaah Azza Wa Jall until it was nearly midday. he then turned around and said to me, 'This is my early morning meal, if I do not take this breakfast, my strength will drop.'"
Al-Waabil as-Sayyib of Ibn al-Qayyim, pg. 60, Daar al-Bayaan.
This next one is one of my all time fave quotes from arguably the biggest muhadith of our times, not to mention Qadhi and mufasir, the one who's name makes the hearts of the madakhila tremble . Imam ahmad shakir
"One of the strangest things to note is that we are living in a time when some of the Muslims are embarrassed to quote the verses and ahadith on Jihad in front of their disbelieving friends. Their faces turn red because they are too shy to mention the rulings on the Jizyah, slavery and killing prisoners of war. They wish that they could erase these verses and ahadith from the Qur’an and Sunnah so that they would not be criticized by this world with its backward principles, despite its claims to be civilized. If they cannot erase them, then they try to misinterpret them and distort their meanings so that they suit the whims and desires of their masters. I will not say so that they suit their own whims and desires, for they are too weak and ignorant to have their own whims and desires. Rather, it is the whims and desires of their masters and teachers among the missionaries and colonialists, the enemies of Islam."
''Umdat at-Tafsir'; 1/46
please ponder over this and know that he wrote this 50 years ago, what would the imam say today.

Imaam Maalik bin Anas reported to have said: “The latter part of this ummah will not be rectified, except by that which rectified its former part.” [need referance]
I like Imaam adh-dhahabis quotes. A true Imaam of Jarh wa ta'deel (of later times). From the later ulema he is one of my faviroutes. Enjoy reading his biographical accounts. Always very beneficial and knowledge (traditionalist) based and with evidence of great research. But most of his words are almost always full of justice, fairness and balanced. For example his words on Ibn Taymiyyah above show how he gives justice to Ibn Taymiyyah status. Likewise with Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilaanee.
Imaam adh-dhahabee concludes his biography with the following
"In Summary, Shaykh Abdul Qadir is of great standing. He has some statements and claims that are objectionable and disapproved of and with Allah is his appointmen. Some of these (statements) are falsely attributed to him" [Siyar al-Alaam an-Nubalaa' 20/451]
another quote I can't remeber it exactly now (I think it's in kitaab as-sunnah by Abdullah Ibn Ahmad - will need to check) that always makes me smile and here for comic value (not that the salaf thought it was a joke) - "if you see a jahmi on an edge of a well, push him in"

Bin baz mentioned it (in a nice qoute i must say)
“There is no path for the Muslims to regain the great glory of their Pious Predecessors or to deserve help and victory over their enemies, except by returning to their Religion; being upright upon it, having allegiance to those who align themselves with it, having enmity with those who show enmity to it, judging by Allaah’s sharee’ah in all affairs, uniting their word upon the truth and co-operating with each other in piety and righteousness - just as Imaam Maalik bin Anas, rahmatullaah ‘alayhi, said: “The latter part of this ummah will not be rectified, except by that which rectified its former part.” This is the view of all the people of knowledge, that Allaah the Most Perfect rectified the first part of this ummah due to their following His sharee’ah and clinging to His rope upon truthfulness and mutual co-operation. There can be no rectification for the latter part of this ummah except by this great means.”
Majmoo’ Fataawaa wa Maqaalaat Mutanawwi’ah (7/375)
subahallah listen to this one ,and ponder over it, how simpley the shaykh explains the way to honour in his opinion.
"History does not write its lines except with blood. Glory does not build its loft edifice except with skulls, Honour and respect cannot be established except on a foundation of cripples and corpses. Empires, distinguished peoples, states and societies cannot be established except with examples. Indeed those who think that they can change reality, or change societies, without blood, sacrifices and invalids, without pure, innocent souls, then they do not understand the essence of this Deen and they do not know the method of the best of the Messengers (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)."
Shaykh Dr. 'Abdullah 'Azzam, taken from "Martyrs: The Building Blocks of Nations"

It was said to Ibn al-Akhdar, "Will you not reply to some of Ibn al-Jawzi's doubts?" He said: "The one with few mistakes is to be followed-up on, as for this individual, then his doubts are too many" [Siyaar A'laam an-Nubalaa`, 21/382 for al-Haafith ath-Thahabi]

Ibn al-'Arabi about his teacher al-Ghazzali 'hujjat al-islam': "He swallowed all the philosphers (by refuting their arguments), but when he wanted to vomit them out, he couldn't"
Meaning, he became immensely affected by Greek Philosophy... But then again, all Ash'aris are affected by it, anyway!
