Default How do you care for your books?

    بسم الله

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

For those of you with their own libraries, do you take any particular measures in protecting your beloved books?

    1) Protecting the spines? Unstable leaning tends to damage the spines so the shape of the book becomes warped.

    2) Protection from dust?

    3) Protection from damp?

    4) Do you have bookmarks for each one of your books? (protects pages from being creased due to turning for marking purposes).

Depending on the climate and manner of storage some books can get very spoilt.

Any special methods if putting them away for long storage, say in a garage where there will be dampness and heat (at different times of the year)?

I just leave them on the shelf, stacked one on top of the other...sorry to disappoint you.

    Wa `Alaykum as-Salaam,

I feed mine thrice a day and usually give them fresh water and a lot of green vegetables ... I try to take them for morning walks but lately, it's been hard with my busy-schedule.
Abû Hurayrah relates that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: This religion is easy. No one becomes harsh or strict in the religion without it overwhelming him. So, fulfill your duties as best you can and rejoice. Rely upon the efforts of the morning and of the evening and a little at night and you will reach your target.

Best thing is to buy decent publications in the beginning - hardbacks are cool. After that, just keep them in an open bookshelf safely away from the hazards of the kitchen and siblings.

I guess unless you constantly read the same book, most of the time the spine won't get creased & pages will be intact... but then again it depends on how you handle books in general. I know my brother could make a book he just bought a week ago seem like he's had it for a decade (same story with his trainers too)... so yeah rifqan bil-kutub!

"... And the last of their call will be, "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds." [10:10]

Imam Malik (rh): “Do not look to the sins of people as if you are Lords, but look to your own sins as if you are slaves. Have mercy on the people of affliction and praise Allah for your well-being, and never say, ‘This person is from the people of Hellfire, and this person is from the people of Paradise.’ Do not be arrogant over the sinners, but rather ask Allah to grant them hidayah and rashad (i.e. guidance).”

All my hardbacks are lined neatly in an open bookcase,I dust the tops with a feather duster, non hard backs are stacked on top of one an other.
I don't like books in perfect condition, surely it means they are not read and belong in the reference section of a library, but if they are purely for studying I suppose you would need them in tip top condition.

I remember as a child loving the books my dad read the most, just felt old and worn, fondest memories of my dad are him sitting on his chair, and a knee high pile of books on each side of him.

جزاك الله خيرا for the replies. I am more concerned about keeping books where there is damp. It affects them adversely.

If there's damp, keep them somewhere air currents circulate (don't lock them up in a cupboard)- give them plenty of room to 'breathe'.
